Chapter 1: The Fall Everyone Saw

The first thing I heard after breaking the surface of the water was laughter.

Not the nervous kind. Not the shocked kind.

A real laugh.

A laugh that belonged to someone who had just watched another person suffer and found it entertaining.

Cold water swallowed me whole. My dress dragged me downward like a heavy curtain, twisting around my legs as I fought to understand which way was up.

My right arm refused to move.

I kicked desperately with my left leg, my lungs burning, my injured shoulder sending a sharp electric pain through my entire body every time I tried to pull myself forward.

Three months earlier, I had been told I might never regain full movement in that arm.

A car accident had damaged the nerves around my shoulder. The doctors said recovery would take patience. Physical therapy. Time.

And most importantly, avoiding situations where I could hurt myself again.

My sister Vanessa knew every detail.

She was the person who sat beside my hospital bed during my first week after surgery. She was the one who held my hand when I cried because I couldn't lift a coffee cup with my right hand.

At least, that was what I believed.

Until she pushed me into the pool at her wedding weekend celebration.

I finally broke through the water, coughing violently as air rushed back into my lungs.

Thirty guests stood around the pool terrace, frozen.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Water poured from my pale blue dress onto the cold concrete as I crawled toward the edge using only my left arm.

A bridesmaid named Claire rushed forward and wrapped a towel around my shoulders.

"Oh my God, Emma," she whispered.

"Are you okay?""

I couldn't answer immediately.

My body was shaking.

My shoulder felt like it was on fire.

Then I heard Vanessa.

"It was just a joke.""

I looked up.

My sister stood near the pool in her expensive white rehearsal dinner dress, her perfectly curled hair untouched, her makeup flawless.

She looked annoyed.

Not worried.

Annoyed.

Claire stared at her.

"A joke?""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"She fell. It's not like I threw her into the ocean.""

My mouth opened slightly.

"You pushed me.""

The words came out weak.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"I barely touched you.""

The guests shifted uncomfortably.

Then a voice behind her cut through the silence.

"You pushed her with both hands.""

Everyone turned.

Daniel.

Vanessa's fiancé.

He stood several feet away, his expression completely different from the man who had been smiling in every wedding photo that morning.

Cold.

Disappointed.

Angry.

Vanessa's face changed instantly.

"Daniel, don't make this dramatic.""

He looked at my shoulder.

Then at the pool.

Then back at her.

"She told us yesterday she couldn't use her arm properly.""

Vanessa laughed softly.

"She's being dramatic.""

I watched something disappear from Daniel's face.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Trust.

"You knew she couldn't swim.""

Vanessa looked away.

"I knew she was fine.""

"You knew she was injured.""

"She wasn't supposed to be standing near the pool.""

The excuse was so ridiculous that several guests looked away in disbelief.

I pulled the towel tighter around myself.

Only then did I realize something.

Vanessa hadn't accidentally pushed me.

She had walked over to me.

She had looked directly at me.

And she had shoved me.

Because earlier that afternoon, she had told me something I thought was just a sister being emotional before her wedding.

"You always find a way to make things about you.""

I hadn't understood what she meant.

Not until now.

Daniel stepped closer to her.

"Why did you do it?""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Because she was ruining my weekend.""

A silence fell over the terrace.

Even she seemed to realize she had said too much.

Daniel blinked.

"Excuse me?""

She sighed dramatically.

"Everyone has been asking about her accident. Everyone keeps checking on her. Do you know how annoying that is at my wedding?""

My chest tightened.

I had spent months trying not to be a burden.

I canceled plans because I didn't want people worrying.

I apologized every time someone helped me open a door.

I had even considered skipping Vanessa's wedding weekend because I was afraid my injury would draw attention.

And somehow, she still thought I was stealing her spotlight.

Daniel slowly reached into his pocket.

He pulled out his phone.

Vanessa frowned.

"What are you doing?""

He didn't answer.

He simply walked away.

At first, everyone assumed he was cooling off.

I did too.

But one hour later, while Vanessa was upstairs changing out of her dress, Daniel made a phone call that would change everything.

May you like

And nobody knew that the person who would expose Vanessa's biggest secret was not me.

It was the man she was supposed to marry.
