Chapter 4: The Family That Chose Sides

My father's message was only six words.

"We need to talk about Vanessa.""

I stared at the screen.

For years, my father avoided conflict.

He was the kind of person who would rather repair a broken chair than admit someone broke it.

When Vanessa and I fought, he always said the same thing.

"You're sisters. You'll work it out.""

But sisters weren't supposed to secretly destroy each other.

I met him at a small coffee shop twenty minutes from the wedding venue.

He looked older than I remembered.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

He wrapped both hands around his coffee cup.

"I should have told you sooner.""

My heart sank.

"Told me what?""

He looked down.

"Your sister lied about the day you left home.""

I already knew.

But hearing him say it made the pain sharper.

"What did she tell you?""

"She told us you wanted independence.""

I laughed quietly.

"Of course she did.""

My father closed his eyes.

"Your mother and I believed her.""

That hurt.

More than Vanessa.

Because parents were supposed to know.

"We thought you were angry at us.""

"I was.""

He nodded sadly.

"You had every right.""

He reached into his bag and pulled out a folder.

Inside were printed messages.

Texts between Vanessa and him.

My hands trembled as I read them.

Vanessa had told my parents I was unstable.

That I was embarrassing the family.

That I needed to learn responsibility.

She had convinced them that pushing me away was helping me.

I looked up.

"Why now?""

My father swallowed.

"Because Daniel called me.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He wanted to know if this was normal behavior for Vanessa.""

I looked away.

Daniel had done what nobody else did.

He asked questions.

He didn't just accept Vanessa's version.

That evening, I returned to the venue.

The wedding decorations were still there.

But the celebration was gone.

Guests whispered in small groups.

Vanessa stood near the entrance.

Waiting.

The moment she saw me, she walked over.

"You talked to Dad.""

I stopped.

"Yes.""

"You had no right.""

I stared at her.

"You pushed me into a pool.""

She looked around.

"Lower your voice.""

"No.""

Her face changed.

"You always do this.""

"Do what?""

"Make everyone choose you.""

I almost laughed.

"Vanessa, I spent my entire life choosing you.""

For the first time, she had no response.

Daniel appeared behind her.

He looked exhausted.

"We need to talk.""

Vanessa looked at him.

"Are you leaving me?""

He didn't answer immediately.

That silence was enough.

Her eyes filled with anger.

"You can't.""

"I can.""

"You promised.""

"I promised to marry the person I thought you were.""

Vanessa looked at me.

And suddenly I understood.

She wasn't angry because she lost Daniel.

She was angry because someone finally saw her clearly.

The next morning, a package arrived at my apartment.

No return address.

Inside was a letter.

And a second photograph.

This one was taken the night before the accident that damaged my shoulder.

The night Vanessa had told everyone I was "reckless.""

But the photo showed something I never knew.

Vanessa had been there.

May you like

And she wasn't just a witness.

She was the reason I crashed.
