Chapter 2: The Call That Changed Everything
The guest room smelled like lavender and rain.
I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at my useless right arm while Claire placed an ice pack over my shoulder.
The wedding decorations outside the window looked beautiful.
Golden lights.
Fresh flowers.
White chairs lined perfectly across the lawn.
It was supposed to be a happy weekend.
Instead, I felt like I had walked into a nightmare wearing a bridesmaid dress.
Claire sat beside me.
"Emma, you need to go to urgent care.""
"I'm okay.""
She gave me a look.
"You always say that.""
I looked down.
Because she was right.
After the accident, I had become an expert at pretending.
Pretending the pain wasn't bad.
Pretending I didn't need help.
Pretending losing parts of my independence didn't hurt.
A knock came at the door.
Claire opened it.
Daniel stood there.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
"I'm sorry," he said.
Those three words almost broke me.
Not because I wanted an apology.
Because Vanessa never gave one.
"Why are you sorry?"" I asked.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"Because I should have noticed things sooner.""
Claire stepped back, giving us space.
Daniel walked inside.
"I called the resort.""
My eyebrows pulled together.
"What?""
"The honeymoon.""
I stared at him.
"What about it?""
"I canceled it.""
The room went silent.
"You canceled your honeymoon?""
He nodded.
"Twelve days in Maui. Everything.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"Daniel, you can't make a decision like that because you're angry.""
"I'm not angry.""
His voice was calm.
That somehow made it more serious.
"I'm disappointed.""
He sat across from me.
"I spent two years believing Vanessa was someone who protected people. Someone kind. Someone who cared.""
He looked toward the window.
"Today I watched her hurt you because she was jealous of attention you never wanted.""
I swallowed.
"Maybe she was just embarrassed.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Emma, she didn't push you because she made a mistake.""
His jaw tightened.
"She pushed you because she wanted you to feel small.""
I didn't know what to say.
Because deep down, I knew he was right.
A few minutes later, there was a loud knock.
Vanessa.
"Daniel?""
Her voice sounded different.
Confused.
Then angry.
"Why did the hotel email me saying the reservation was canceled?""
Daniel stood.
"Because it's canceled.""
The door opened.
Vanessa stared at him.
"What did you do?""
"I canceled our honeymoon.""
Her face went pale.
"You canceled Maui?""
"Yes.""
"For a stupid accident?""
Daniel looked at her.
"It wasn't an accident.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"You are seriously doing this over her?""
The words hurt more than I expected.
Not because they surprised me.
Because they confirmed everything.
Daniel shook his head.
"No. I'm doing this because of you.""
Vanessa stepped into the room.
"Do you even understand what you're doing? Everyone is downstairs. Our wedding is tomorrow.""
"I understand perfectly.""
"You can't just punish me.""
Daniel laughed once.
A sad, empty sound.
"This isn't punishment.""
He pointed toward me.
"This is me realizing I don't know the person I'm marrying.""
Vanessa looked at me.
And for the first time that night, I saw fear in her eyes.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Because she knew Daniel was seeing her differently.
She walked away without another word.
But before she left, she whispered something only I heard.
"This isn't over.""
The next morning, I discovered she meant every word.
May you like
Because waiting on my bridesmaid chair was an envelope with my name on it.
And inside was a photograph that proved Vanessa had been planning something much worse than a pool prank.
