Chapter 8: The Secret Before the Wedding
I couldn't move.
Patricia's words seemed to echo around the small room.
Marcus wasn't the only man Claire was protecting.
I looked at the medical record again.
Three months before my wedding.
Claire had been pregnant.
Marcus had accompanied her.
My brother had known about the pregnancy.
My father had known about the pregnancy.
And somehow, all three had allowed me to marry Claire without knowing any of it.
Jordan was standing beside the window.
His hands were clenched.
"Who was the other man?"" he asked.
Patricia looked at him.
"I don't know.""
"Then how do you know Mom was protecting someone?""
"Because I heard her arguing with your grandfather.""
"What did they say?""
Patricia closed her eyes.
"I remember it clearly.""
She took a moment.
Then she began recounting what had happened.
On the night of the hospital incident, Richard Bennett had arrived carrying a leather briefcase.
He had spoken privately with Claire and Marcus.
Patricia had been outside the room when she heard Claire say that she couldn't let Arthur discover the truth.
Richard had replied that the truth would destroy more than one marriage.
Marcus had asked whether the arrangement was still possible.
And Claire had said something Patricia never forgot.
*"If Arthur finds out who the first baby belonged to, he will never forgive me.""*
I stared at Patricia.
"Who did the first baby belong to?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"Did you ask?""
"Yes. Your father told me to mind my own business.""
I stood and walked to the window.
The parking lot lights reflected against the glass.
I felt as if I were standing outside my own life, watching strangers make decisions that had shaped everything I knew.
Jordan spoke quietly.
"Could the first baby have been mine?""
Patricia shook her head.
"No. You and Maya were born that night.""
"Then what baby was she talking about?""
Patricia looked at me.
"That's what I never understood.""
I returned to the chair.
"Did you keep any other records?""
She nodded.
"One.""
She opened a drawer and removed a small notebook.
The pages were yellowed.
Several names and dates were written inside.
I recognized my father's handwriting.
He had been keeping a private record of the payments made to Patricia.
But on the final page, there was something else.
A note dated two days before his death.
*If Arthur ever asks about the children, tell him to contact Daniel Reeves.*
I stared at the name.
"Who is Daniel Reeves?""
Patricia shook her head.
"Your father never explained.""
Jordan looked at me.
"Do you know him?""
I searched my memory.
Then I remembered.
Daniel Reeves had been my father's lawyer.
He had handled the estate after his death.
He had also visited our house several times when my father was ill.
I took out my phone.
I still had his number.
I called.
He answered after four rings.
"Arthur?""
"Daniel, I need to ask you something.""
"Is everything okay?""
"No. My father left a message about a hospital incident sixteen years ago.""
Silence.
Then Daniel sighed.
"I wondered when this day would come.""
My stomach tightened.
"You know?""
"I know part of it.""
"Where are you?""
"At home.""
"I need to see you.""
There was another pause.
Then he said, "Come tomorrow morning.""
"Tonight.""
"Arthur, it's late.""
"My children have spent eighteen years living inside a lie. I'm not waiting.""
Daniel exhaled.
"All right. My office. Thirty minutes.""
I ended the call.
Patricia watched me.
"You're going to find out.""
"Yes.""
She reached for my arm.
"Mr. Bennett, there's something else.""
I turned.
"Your father wasn't a bad man.""
I looked at her.
"Then why did he do all this?""
"Because he made one terrible decision. And then he spent the rest of his life trying to make sure nobody discovered it.""
I shook my head.
"That's not the same as being a good man.""
Patricia nodded sadly.
"No. It isn't.""
Jordan and I left the facility.
On the drive, he remained quiet.
Finally, he asked, "Do you think Mom ever loved us?""
I glanced at him.
"Yes.""
"Then why did she lie?""
"People sometimes make decisions out of fear and spend years convincing themselves those decisions were love.""
He stared out the window.
"That's a terrible way to live.""
"It is.""
When we arrived at Daniel's office, the lights were still on.
He was waiting beside his desk.
He looked older than I remembered.
His gray hair was thinning, and his glasses sat low on his nose.
He stood when we entered.
"Arthur.""
I didn't shake his hand.
"Tell me what my father left you.""
Daniel looked at Jordan.
"Would you like to wait outside?""
"No," Jordan said.
Daniel nodded.
"All right.""
He opened a locked cabinet and removed a thick file.
The label read:
*BENNETT FAMILY — CONFIDENTIAL.*
He placed it on the desk.
"Your father asked me to keep this file until after his death. He gave me specific instructions. I was not to open it unless you asked about the hospital incident.""
I stared at the folder.
"And you followed those instructions?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because I was his lawyer.""
I opened the file.
Inside were bank records, hospital correspondence, and a series of letters.
The first letter was from my father.
It was addressed to me.
I unfolded it.
*Arthur,*
*If you are reading this, then the secret I helped bury has finally reached you. I wish I could tell you I did it for the right reasons. I cannot.*
I stopped.
Jordan leaned closer.
I continued reading.
*Sixteen years ago, I learned that Claire had been involved with Marcus before your marriage. I also learned that she had been pregnant. But the pregnancy was not the reason I intervened at the hospital.*
My hands began shaking.
*The reason was that I discovered Claire had already given birth to a child before she met you. A child she believed had been placed for adoption.*
I looked up.
Jordan's face had gone pale.
I returned to the letter.
*That child was alive. And I knew where he was.*
I stopped breathing.
The next paragraph was shorter.
*Arthur, you have another son.*
Jordan stepped back.
"What?""
I continued.
*His name is Daniel. He was born before your marriage, and his biological father is Marcus. Claire never told you because she believed the adoption was permanent. Marcus knew the child existed but never admitted it.*
I looked at Daniel Reeves.
He was staring at the letter.
"Why is your name on the file?"" I asked.
He removed his glasses.
"Because I'm not Daniel Reeves.""
My stomach dropped.
He looked at Jordan.
Then at me.
"My name is Daniel Bennett.""
He placed another document on the desk.
It was a birth certificate.
The mother's name was Claire Bennett.
The father's name was Marcus Bennett.
And the child's name was Daniel.
I stared at the man standing in front of me.
He was in his early thirties.
He had the same dark eyes as Marcus.
The same uneven smile.
The same small scar above his left eyebrow.
Marcus's scar.
Jordan whispered, "You're our brother?""
Daniel nodded.
"I think so.""
I looked at the letter again.
My father had written one final paragraph.
*I kept Daniel's identity secret because I believed the family could not survive another scandal. But if the children ever discover the truth, they deserve to know that none of them was responsible for what the adults did.*
I lowered the letter.
For eighteen years, I had believed I had two children.
Now I was standing in front of a third.
And suddenly, the entire history of my marriage looked different.
I turned toward Daniel.
"Does Marcus know you're here?""
Daniel nodded.
"He knows.""
"Does Claire?""
"Yes.""
"Then why haven't you come forward?""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Because I've been waiting for my mother to tell me the truth.""
He opened another drawer.
Inside was a photograph.
A much older picture.
It showed Claire holding a newborn baby.
Marcus stood beside her.
And my father was holding a second infant.
On the back, in my father's handwriting, were seven words.
*Three children. One family. One unforgivable decision.*
Daniel looked at me.
"There's something else.""
I felt exhausted.
"What now?""
He handed me a second letter.
"This one was written by Marcus.""
I unfolded it.
May you like
The first sentence made my blood run cold.
*Arthur, if Daniel has finally spoken to you, then you need to know why Claire chose you instead of me.*
