Chapter 1: The Sister Who Knew Too Much

Nia's expression changed.

She looked at Maya, then at me, and finally at the small decorative table beside the staircase.

"She doesn't know what she's talking about," Maya repeated.

Nia slowly shook her head.

"That's interesting," she said.

"Because I haven't told Dad what I saw.""

Maya's face went white.

Claire stood up.

"Girls, stop. Whatever this is, we're going to discuss it calmly.""

But Nia wasn't looking at her mother anymore.

She was looking at me.

"Dad, can I show you something?""

I nodded.

Nia reached into the pocket of her hoodie and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

It was a photograph.

Not a printed photograph from a family album. It was a picture taken on someone's phone and printed at a drugstore.

I recognized the living room immediately.

The cream-colored sofa.

The staircase.

The little table where Claire kept a bowl of decorative keys.

But the person sitting on the sofa wasn't Maya.

It was Marcus.

And he wasn't alone.

Beside him sat a woman I had never seen before.

She was holding a document.

Marcus was pointing at something on it.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written four words in black ink.

*SHE MUST NOT KNOW.*

"What is this?"" I asked.

Nia swallowed.

"I found it in Maya's backpack last Tuesday.""

Maya jumped to her feet.

"You went through my things?""

"I wasn't looking for anything!"" Nia snapped.

"Your backpack was open, and this fell out.""

"Give it to me!""

Maya lunged forward.

I caught her wrist gently.

"Nobody is taking anything. Nia, continue.""

Nia's hands trembled.

"That woman came here twice. The first time was last month. The second time was yesterday, before Uncle Marcus arrived.""

Claire stared at the photograph.

"Who is she?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you ask Maya?""

"Yes.""

"And what did she say?""

Nia looked at her sister.

"She told me that if I ever mentioned the woman to anyone, something bad would happen to Jordan.""

The room became silent.

I turned toward Maya.

"Did you threaten your sister?""

"No!""

"Then explain what she means.""

Maya began crying again.

"I didn't threaten her. I was trying to protect Jordan.""

Jordan.

My son.

The same boy I had sent upstairs.

The same boy who had looked relieved when Marcus appeared on the security footage.

Suddenly, that expression made more sense.

I pulled out my phone.

"Jordan, come downstairs.""

A moment later, his footsteps sounded above us.

He appeared at the top of the staircase.

"What?""

"Come here, please.""

He descended slowly, looking from Nia to Maya.

When he saw the photograph in my hand, he stopped.

His face lost all color.

"Where did you get that?""

"Nia found it in Maya's backpack.""

Jordan looked at his sister.

Then he looked at me.

"Did she tell you about the woman?""

"What woman?""

He laughed bitterly.

"Of course she didn't.""

"Jordan, I need you to tell me what you know.""

He walked into the living room and stood beside the sofa.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he pointed at the photograph.

"That's the woman who came to our school.""

Claire frowned.

"What woman?""

"She approached me outside the gym three weeks ago. She knew my name. She knew where I worked after school. She even knew what car I drove.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did she want?""

"She asked me whether Maya had told me anything about Dad's brother.""

I looked at Maya.

She was staring at the carpet.

Jordan continued.

"I told her I didn't know what she was talking about. Then she handed me an envelope.""

"Did you open it?""

"No.""

"Why not?""

"Because I thought it was some kind of scam.""

He paused.

"Then she said something that made me change my mind.""

"What?""

Jordan looked directly at me.

"She said, 'Your uncle Marcus has been lying to your father for sixteen years.''"

Claire slowly sat down.

I felt as if the room had tilted.

Sixteen years.

Marcus and I had been close since childhood.

He had been there when I got married.

He had held Jordan in the hospital after his birth.

He had helped me renovate this house.

He was the person I called when my business nearly collapsed.

And now someone was claiming he had been lying to me for sixteen years.

"What happened to the envelope?"" I asked.

Jordan shook his head.

"I gave it to Maya.""

"Why?""

"Because the woman told me she had already spoken to her.""

Maya finally looked up.

"Jordan, please.""

"No. I'm done protecting you.""

His voice cracked.

"Do you have any idea what I've been going through?""

I stepped toward him.

"Jordan, what exactly are you protecting your sister from?""

He looked at Maya.

Then he looked at Claire.

Finally, his eyes settled on me.

"That's the problem, Dad. I don't think she's the only person we're protecting.""

Claire stood abruptly.

"That's enough.""

Jordan stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because you're upsetting your sister.""

"Mom, she's been lying to us for weeks!""

"She's sixteen!""

"And I'm eighteen! Does that mean nobody cares what happens to me?""

Claire opened her mouth.

No words came out.

I raised my hand.

"Everyone stop.""

I turned toward Maya.

"Where is the envelope Marcus gave you?""

She shook her head.

"I don't have it.""

"The recording shows you putting it beneath the sofa cushion.""

Maya's eyes flicked toward the sofa.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

I walked over and lifted the cushion.

There it was.

A plain brown envelope.

No name.

No return address.

Just a small blue sticker in the upper-right corner.

My hands felt strangely cold as I opened it.

Inside was a folded document, a photograph, and a handwritten note.

I unfolded the document first.

It was a copy of a birth registration record.

The name of the child was blacked out.

The mother's name was also partially covered.

But the father's name was perfectly visible.

*Arthur Bennett.*

My name.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

"Arthur?"" Claire whispered.

I couldn't answer.

The document listed a date sixteen years earlier.

A date I remembered very well.

It was the date I had spent the entire night at the hospital after Maya was born.

I looked at my daughter.

"Why is my name on this?""

Maya covered her mouth.

Jordan stepped closer.

"That's what I've been trying to tell you.""

I pulled out the photograph.

It showed Marcus standing outside a hospital entrance, holding a newborn baby.

The date printed beneath the image matched the date on the document.

And on the back, in the same black handwriting, were five words.

*ASK YOUR WIFE ABOUT ELENA.*

I slowly turned toward Claire.

My wife was staring at the photograph.

Not confused.

Not shocked.

Terrified.

"Claire," I whispered.

"Who is Elena?""

She looked at me.

And before she could answer, my phone began ringing.

The caller ID showed a number I hadn't saved.

I answered.

A woman's voice came through.

"Mr. Bennett?""

"Who is this?""

"My name is Elena.""

I gripped the phone.

She took a shaky breath.

"Please don't let Marcus destroy that envelope. Your daughter has only been told half the truth.""

Then she said something that made me look at Maya.

"Because the baby in that photograph wasn't yours.""

May you like

The call disconnected.

And my wife began to cry.
