Chapter 6: The Nurse Who Took the Money

Maya stood up.

For the first time that evening, she wasn't looking at her mother with fear.

She was looking at her with anger.

"Why are you always telling me to leave whenever someone asks you a question?""

Claire's hands stopped moving.

"Maya, you don't understand.""

"Then explain it!""

I stepped between them.

"Claire, put the clothes down.""

She stared at me.

"Arthur, please don't make this worse.""

"You're packing a suitcase in the middle of the night after someone broke into our living room and stole evidence. I think we're already past the point where things can get worse.""

Claire slowly placed a sweater on the bed.

Jordan appeared in the doorway.

He had heard everything.

"Mom," he said quietly, "did Grandpa pay the nurse?""

Claire looked at him.

Then she looked at me.

Nobody answered.

Jordan stepped inside.

"I want a yes or no.""

Claire sat on the edge of Maya's bed.

"Your grandfather was trying to protect this family.""

Jordan shook his head.

"That's what everybody keeps saying. Protect the family. Protect the family. But nobody ever asks what happened to the people who weren't allowed to know the truth.""

His voice broke.

"Did he pay her?""

Claire nodded.

"Yes.""

The single word seemed to drain the air from the room.

I pulled a chair away from the wall and sat down.

"How much?""

"Arthur...""

"How much, Claire?""

She rubbed her hands together.

"Your father gave Patricia money for years. At first, it was a few thousand dollars. Then larger amounts.""

"Why?""

"Because she threatened to expose what happened.""

I stared at her.

"Your father arranged the exchange?""

Claire shook her head.

"Not exactly.""

"What does that mean?""

She looked at Maya.

Then at Jordan.

And finally, she began telling us something I had never heard before.

Sixteen years earlier, the hospital had made an error during a routine identification check.

Elena had delivered a healthy baby boy.

Claire had delivered a healthy baby girl.

Marcus was the father of both children, although nobody had admitted that fact to me at the time.

When the nurses discovered that two identification bands had been mixed up, the hospital contacted the families.

Marcus was already at the hospital.

My father arrived shortly afterward.

According to Claire, my father had been furious when he learned about the mistake.

He insisted the hospital correct the records immediately.

But Marcus panicked.

He had been separated from Elena, who had made it clear she didn't want to raise a child with him.

Meanwhile, Claire had become attached to the baby she believed was hers.

She was frightened of losing her daughter.

And Marcus was frightened of losing the opportunity to remain close to both children.

"They should have told us," I said.

Claire nodded.

"I know.""

"But they didn't.""

"No.""

"What happened next?""

Claire looked down.

"Your father discovered that Marcus had entered the nursery without authorization. He also discovered that Marcus had persuaded a nurse to change the identification records.""

I stared at her.

"Marcus did it?""

She nodded.

"Your father threatened to report him. But then Marcus explained that he wanted to keep both children close. He told your father that if the truth came out, the hospital would take the babies into custody while the investigation happened.""

Jordan laughed bitterly.

"That's convenient.""

Claire continued.

"Your father eventually agreed to a private arrangement. He believed that if everyone stayed quiet, the children could grow up without being dragged into a scandal.""

"And Patricia?""

"She was the nurse who helped Marcus alter the records. Your father paid her to keep silent.""

I stood.

"Why did he pay her?""

"Because he was afraid Marcus would go to prison. He thought it would destroy the family.""

I walked to the window.

Outside, the street was dark.

I could almost see my father's old car parked beside the house.

The car he used to drive me to school.

The same man who had taught me to stand up for what was right had helped conceal the truth about my children.

I turned back.

"And you?""

Claire's eyes filled.

"I agreed.""

"Why?""

"Because I loved Maya.""

I looked at her.

"And Jordan?""

"I loved him too.""

"Then why did you let Elena believe her baby was dead?""

Claire began crying.

"I didn't write that letter.""

"But you knew.""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

Jordan stepped closer.

"Did you ever think about what it would feel like if I found out?""

Claire reached for him.

He stepped away.

"I used to ask why you never wanted me to visit Grandpa alone," he said.

"You always said he was too old to be bothered.""

Claire lowered her hand.

"He knew too much.""

Jordan stared at her.

"Did he know I was his grandson?""

"Yes.""

"Did he ever tell me?""

"No.""

Jordan looked toward the ceiling.

Then he whispered, "I used to think he loved me more than anyone.""

Nobody spoke.

I felt something inside me breaking.

Not because my father had made a terrible decision.

But because he had spent the rest of his life allowing us to believe he was an honest man.

I turned to Claire.

"Where are the original documents?""

She hesitated.

"I don't know.""

"Marcus took them.""

"Some of them.""

"What about Patricia's statement?""

Claire looked confused.

"What statement?""

Nia appeared behind Jordan.

"The one in the blue folder.""

We all turned.

Nia held up her phone.

"I took pictures before Uncle Marcus left.""

She showed me an image.

It was a document with a hospital letterhead.

At the top was Patricia Wells's name.

Below it was a handwritten statement.

*I, Patricia Wells, confirm that the newborn identification records were deliberately altered on the night of November 12. I was instructed by Marcus Bennett to switch the identification bands. Arthur Bennett's father, Richard Bennett, witnessed the exchange and later arranged payment for my silence.*

I read it twice.

Then I noticed the final paragraph.

*However, neither Marcus nor Richard was responsible for the original mistake. The decision to exchange the babies was made before the nurse entered the nursery.*

My blood ran cold.

"Before the nurse entered?""

Nia nodded.

"There's more.""

She enlarged the photograph.

The last line contained a name.

*The person who gave the first instruction was Claire Bennett.*

I looked at my wife.

She stood motionless.

Maya slowly stepped away from her.

"Mom?""

Claire shook her head.

"That isn't true.""

I held up the phone.

"Patricia says you ordered the exchange.""

"She is lying!""

"Then why is your name here?""

Claire began breathing rapidly.

"Arthur, you have to understand. I didn't know what else to do.""

"What did you do?""

She looked at me.

May you like

Then she whispered something that made Jordan take a step backward.

"I chose which baby I wanted.""
