Chapter 3: The Son Who Was Never Told

Jordan didn't move.

He simply stood there, staring at his mother.

"Say that again," he whispered.

Claire shook her head.

"Jordan...""

"No. Say it again.""

She took a step toward him.

"Your biological mother is Elena.""

He laughed.

It was a small, broken sound.

"That's impossible.""

Marcus lowered his eyes.

Jordan looked at him.

"You're my father?""

Marcus nodded.

Jordan stepped backward.

"You're my uncle.""

"I know.""

"You're the man who taught me how to ride a bike.""

"I know.""

"You're the man who took me fishing every summer.""

Marcus's voice cracked.

"Yes.""

Jordan's face twisted.

"Then how could you let me call you Uncle Marcus for eighteen years?""

Nobody answered.

He turned toward Claire.

"Did you know?""

Claire closed her eyes.

"Yes.""

"For how long?""

"Since before you were born.""

Jordan looked as if someone had struck him.

"Every birthday. Every Christmas. Every time I asked why I didn't look like Dad.""

"Jordan, sweetheart—"

"Don't call me that!""

He shoved a chair away from the coffee table.

It fell onto its side.

Nia flinched.

Maya started crying again.

I wanted to stop him, but I couldn't blame him for losing control.

I had just learned that my entire understanding of fatherhood had been built around a secret.

Jordan had just learned something even worse.

His mother had known his biological father was living nearby.

His biological father had attended family gatherings.

And both had allowed him to grow up believing they were simply relatives.

I picked up the fallen chair.

"Jordan, let's sit down.""

He shook his head.

"I don't want to sit.""

"Then don't. But listen to me.""

He looked at me.

"You are my son," I said.

His eyes filled.

"I know.""

"No. I need you to hear me. Nothing that happened sixteen years ago changes the fact that I raised you. I was there when you were born.

I held you. I stayed awake when you had pneumonia. I taught you to swim.""

He looked down.

"I know, Dad.""

"And I am not giving that up.""

Jordan pressed his palms against his eyes.

For a moment, he was eight years old again.

Then he looked at Marcus.

"Why?""

Marcus rubbed his face.

"Your mother and I had a complicated relationship.""

"That's not an answer.""

"Elena and I had separated. She didn't want me involved in her life. Claire and I were close, and when you were born—"

"Stop.""

Jordan raised a hand.

"You're making it sound like some romantic accident.""

Marcus fell silent.

Jordan pointed at the leather folder.

"Did you pay them?""

I frowned.

"Pay who?""

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

Jordan picked up a bank statement.

"These transfers. Twenty-five thousand dollars. Forty thousand. Another thirty thousand.""

I took the paper.

The payments had been made to a private account over several years.

The recipient's name was Claire Bennett.

I looked at my wife.

"Why was Marcus sending you money?""

Claire sat down.

"Because he was helping us.""

"Helping us with what?""

"Our mortgage. The medical bills. Your business.""

I looked at the statements.

There were payments dating back sixteen years.

The total was more than I could process.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because you were struggling, Arthur. Your company was almost bankrupt. You were working sixteen-hour days.""

"So?""

"So Marcus offered to help.""

"With what conditions?""

Claire didn't answer.

I turned toward my brother.

"What did you want in return?""

Marcus looked at Jordan.

"Nothing.""

Jordan laughed.

"Really? You secretly fathered me, helped raise me, paid my mother's bills, and visited my sister without telling anybody. But you wanted nothing?""

Marcus lowered his head.

"I wanted to be part of your lives.""

"You were!""

Jordan's voice cracked.

"You were already part of our lives! You were at every birthday. You came to every school event. You were the uncle who bought me my first baseball glove!""

He wiped his face.

"Why wasn't that enough?""

Marcus had no answer.

Then Nia spoke.

"Because he wasn't only trying to be part of our lives.""

Everyone turned.

Nia was holding the photograph.

She flipped it over.

"There are more pictures.""

She pulled three photographs from the folded paper.

The first showed Marcus standing outside a hospital room.

The second showed Claire holding a newborn.

The third showed Elena sitting in a chair beside a baby.

On the back of the third photograph was a handwritten date and a name.

*JORDAN.*

Nia pointed to another line beneath it.

*TRANSFER COMPLETED — 11:42 P.M.*

My stomach tightened.

"What transfer?""

Marcus moved toward her.

"Give me those.""

Nia stepped away.

"No.""

"Those aren't what you think.""

"Then explain them.""

Marcus looked at Claire.

My wife began crying harder.

I took the photographs.

"Marcus, what does transfer completed mean?""

He hesitated.

Then he said, "The babies were switched.""

The room seemed to lose all sound.

I looked at him.

"What?""

"The hospital had two newborns. One belonged to Claire and me. The other belonged to Elena and me. There was a mix-up during an emergency.""

I stared at him.

"You're telling me this was an accident?""

"Initially, yes.""

"Initially?""

Marcus looked down.

"Both mothers were recovering. The hospital discovered the mistake before discharge.""

"Then why didn't you correct it?""

He looked at Claire.

She whispered, "Because we were afraid.""

I felt anger rising so quickly that my hands began shaking.

"Afraid of what?""

"Of losing the children we'd bonded with," Claire said.

Jordan stared at her.

"You chose?""

She began sobbing.

"Jordan, we were terrified. You were so tiny. Elena had already said she didn't want to raise another child with Marcus. She was planning to move away.""

"So you kept me?""

"We didn't want to lose you.""

Jordan stared at her.

"And Maya?""

Claire covered her face.

"We agreed to raise the babies as if nothing had happened.""

I turned toward Marcus.

"And you agreed?""

He nodded.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then I asked the question that had been sitting in my chest.

"Did Elena agree?""

Marcus didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

"Did she know?""

"Not at first.""

"Not at first?""

He looked toward the floor.

"She found out later.""

"How much later?""

"Four months.""

Claire stood.

"Arthur, please.""

I turned on her.

"You let another woman believe her child was dead to her?""

"No!""

"Then what did you tell her?""

Claire began shaking.

Marcus answered.

"Elena was told the baby had died.""

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

Jordan stumbled backward.

Maya covered her ears.

Nia whispered, "No...""

I stared at Marcus.

"You told a mother her baby was dead?""

He looked as if he might collapse.

"I didn't know what else to do.""

I grabbed the edge of the table.

"Then you should have done the right thing.""

Marcus nodded.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

I pointed toward the staircase.

"Get out of my house.""

"Arthur—"

"Get out!""

He picked up his leather folder.

But before he reached the door, Jordan spoke.

"Wait.""

Marcus stopped.

Jordan's voice was quiet now.

"Did Elena really believe I was dead?""

Marcus nodded.

"Yes.""

"And she came looking for me?""

"Yes.""

"How long has she known?""

Marcus hesitated.

"She discovered the truth about six months ago.""

Jordan stared at him.

"Six months?""

"She wanted to meet you.""

"Then why didn't she?""

Marcus looked at Claire.

"Because your mother threatened to have her arrested if she came near this family.""

I turned toward Claire.

She looked away.

Jordan took a deep breath.

"Where is she now?""

Marcus reached into his jacket and removed a folded card.

He placed it on the table.

"She's at the Riverside Hotel. Room 314.""

Jordan picked it up.

His fingers trembled.

Then he looked at me.

"Dad, can you come with me?""

I nodded immediately.

"Of course.""

But as we reached the front door, Claire shouted behind us.

"Arthur, don't let him meet her!""

I stopped.

Slowly, I turned around.

"Why?""

Claire's eyes were filled with panic.

"Because Elena isn't the only person who knows what happened that night.""

May you like

Marcus closed his eyes.

And for the first time, my brother looked genuinely afraid.
