Chapter 2: The Woman From the Hospital

For nearly a minute, nobody spoke.

I stood in the middle of my living room, holding a photograph of my brother with a newborn child while my wife cried on the sofa.

The house felt unfamiliar.

The family pictures on the walls seemed like decorations in somebody else's home.

I looked at Claire.

"Who is Elena?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"I haven't spoken to that woman in years.""

"That isn't an answer.""

"Arthur, please.""

"Sixteen years, Claire. Someone has put my name on a birth certificate. Someone has been meeting our daughter secretly. And apparently, you know the woman who just called me.""

Claire shook her head.

"I knew her. I don't know her anymore.""

Jordan gave a humorless laugh.

"That's convenient.""

"Jordan, don't.""

"No, Mom. You've said that every time I've tried to ask questions.""

I turned toward him.

"What questions?""

He hesitated.

Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a second phone.

It was an old black smartphone with a cracked screen.

"Where did you get that?"" Claire asked.

"From Maya.""

Maya immediately shook her head.

"You promised you wouldn't.""

Jordan's expression hardened.

"I promised I wouldn't show Dad unless I had to.""

He placed the phone on the coffee table.

"There are messages on here. Between Maya and Uncle Marcus.""

My heart sank.

"Why do you have your sister's phone?""

"Because she asked me to keep it.""

I looked at Maya.

"Is that true?""

She nodded reluctantly.

"Why?""

"Because I didn't want Mom finding out.""

Claire stood.

"Finding out what?""

Maya pressed her lips together.

Jordan unlocked the phone and opened a messaging application.

The conversation was between Maya and a contact saved as M.

The first message was dated five weeks earlier.

*MAYA:* I can't keep doing this.

*M:* You have to. Your father deserves to know.

*MAYA:* Not yet.

*M:* Every day you wait makes it worse.

*MAYA:* You promised you wouldn't tell him without me.

*M:* I promised I'd give you time. I didn't promise to let you carry this alone.

I scrolled.

There were dozens of messages.

Some were ordinary.

Others made my stomach twist.

*MAYA:* Jordan thinks something is wrong.

*M:* Keep him out of it.

*MAYA:* He already knows.

*M:* Then tell him to stop investigating.

I looked up.

"Investigating what?""

Jordan rubbed his forehead.

"That's what I've been trying to figure out.""

I returned to the screen.

The last message had been sent that afternoon.

*M:* I left the envelope where we agreed. Do not let your mother open it before your father sees it.

I stared at the sentence.

"Why would Marcus say that?""

Maya whispered, "Because Mom would destroy it.""

Claire recoiled.

"Excuse me?""

Maya looked at her.

"You heard me.""

"How dare you?""

"You told me to forget everything!""

Claire's face changed.

I stepped between them.

"Enough. Claire, sit down.""

She stared at me.

"You're taking her side?""

"I'm asking you to sit down.""

For the first time in our marriage, she looked at me as though she didn't recognize me.

But she sat.

I returned to the messages.

A conversation from two weeks earlier caught my attention.

*MAYA:* Does Dad know about the money?

*M:* No.

*MAYA:* How much?

*M:* Enough to make him understand why this was hidden.

*MAYA:* What if he hates me?

*M:* He won't.

I read that last sentence again.

What if he hates me?

My daughter was terrified that I would hate her.

I put the phone down.

"Maya, look at me.""

She slowly raised her eyes.

"Have I ever given you a reason to think I would stop loving you because of something you didn't choose?""

She started crying.

"No.""

"Then why are you so afraid?""

She looked toward Claire.

That small movement told me more than any answer could have.

I turned to my wife.

"What happened sixteen years ago?""

Claire pressed her fingers against her temples.

"Arthur, I was twenty-eight. We had just moved into our first house. I was pregnant with Maya, and your business was failing.""

"Yes.""

"Marcus was helping us financially.""

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

She looked at me.

"He was helping more than you realized.""

I felt a chill.

"What does that mean?""

Before she could answer, the doorbell rang.

Everyone turned.

I walked toward the front door and checked the security camera.

A man stood on the porch.

Marcus.

He was holding a small leather folder.

I opened the door but didn't step aside.

"Arthur," he said.

His eyes moved past me, toward the living room.

"Is Maya okay?""

"Why wouldn't she be?""

He swallowed.

"Because Elena called you.""

My blood ran cold.

"How do you know that?""

"Because she called me first.""

I stared at my younger brother.

He looked older than he had that afternoon.

There were dark circles beneath his eyes, and his right hand kept gripping the leather folder.

"What is going on, Marcus?""

He lowered his voice.

"Can we talk privately?""

"No.""

"Arthur, please.""

"You're going to tell me everything in front of my family.""

He glanced at Claire.

Something passed between them.

Recognition.

Fear.

Perhaps guilt.

Marcus stepped inside.

He placed the leather folder on the coffee table.

"I should have told you years ago.""

I laughed once.

"That's a spectacular understatement.""

He opened the folder.

Inside were bank statements, medical documents, and several letters.

"Sixteen years ago, Claire and I made a mistake.""

The room went still.

I looked at Claire.

She stood so quickly that the coffee table shook.

"Marcus, don't.""

He closed his eyes.

"She deserves to know.""

"Know what?"" I demanded.

Marcus looked at me.

"Elena was my fiancée.""

I stared.

"What?""

"Before I left for college. We were together for three years. She got pregnant shortly before we broke up.""

"And?""

He swallowed.

"The baby was born on the same night Maya was born.""

I looked at the photograph again.

The hospital.

The newborn.

My brother.

Two babies.

Two families.

My mind began racing.

"Are you telling me that the baby in this photograph is yours?""

Marcus nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then why is my name on the document?""

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Marcus!""

"Because the hospital made a mistake.""

"What kind of mistake?""

Marcus looked at Claire.

She began shaking her head.

Then he said the words I had been dreading.

"The baby listed under your name was born to Elena. And the baby listed under my name...""

He stopped.

His eyes moved toward Maya.

"...was born to Claire.""

Nobody moved.

I stared at my wife.

She was crying now, but she wasn't denying it.

I looked at Maya.

My daughter.

The child whose first steps I had filmed.

The little girl who used to fall asleep with her head on my shoulder.

The girl whose hair I had brushed before her first day of kindergarten.

My voice barely worked.

"Are you saying Maya isn't my biological daughter?""

Marcus nodded.

Claire covered her mouth.

Jordan whispered, "Oh my God.""

I took one step backward.

Then another.

My knees felt weak.

Maya suddenly stood.

"Dad, I'm still me.""

I looked at her.

"I know.""

"Nothing changes.""

"I know.""

"Then please don't look at me like that.""

That broke something inside me.

I crossed the room and pulled her into my arms.

She clung to my shirt, crying against my chest.

"I don't care whose DNA you have," I whispered.

"You're my daughter.""

She nodded against me.

But when I looked over her shoulder, I saw Marcus watching us.

And I realized there was still one question nobody had answered.

If Maya was Marcus's biological daughter, who was Elena's child?

I turned toward my brother.

"Where is the other baby?""

Marcus opened his mouth.

Claire answered first.

"Jordan.""

My arms loosened around Maya.

I looked toward my son.

He was standing motionless beside the staircase.

His face was completely blank.

May you like

Then he whispered:

"That's why she came to my school.""
