Chapter 9: The Secret My Father Took to His Grave
I stared at the photograph until the faces blurred.
My mother, Elaine Bennett, had died six years ago.
Three months after James.
The official cause had been complications following a sudden illness.
My father had never discussed it.
He had barely spoken during the months after her death.
I had assumed grief had taken the last of his strength.
Now I was looking at a photograph showing my mother standing beside Daniel and Peter Lawson.
The date was five months before her death.
I felt dizzy.
"That's my mother.""
Evelyn nodded.
"I know.""
"She's supposed to be dead.""
"The photograph predates her death.""
I looked again.
My mother was wearing a gray coat.
Her hair was shorter than I remembered.
She appeared thinner.
But it was definitely her.
"Why was she meeting Daniel?""
Evelyn zoomed in.
"Look at her hand.""
I leaned forward.
She was holding a small envelope.
On the back was a symbol.
A circle containing three lines.
I recognized it.
It was the emblem my father had used on his private investment files.
"What does that mean?""
Evelyn opened the scanned records from my father's envelope.
After several minutes, she found a matching symbol.
It appeared on a document titled:
Bennett Family Contingency Trust.
The trust had been established twenty years earlier.
Its beneficiaries were listed as Richard Bennett, Elaine Bennett, James Bennett, and Mara Bennett.
But there was an additional clause.
A clause stating that if any beneficiary died under suspicious circumstances, the trustee must suspend distributions until an independent review was completed.
I read it twice.
"Suspicious circumstances?""
Evelyn nodded.
"Your father was protecting against the possibility of fraud or coercion.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Why would my mother be meeting Daniel?""
"We need the original records.""
Evelyn called Michael.
Within an hour, he had located an archived insurance file connected to my mother's death.
The file contained a claim for medical expenses, a hospital report, and a settlement document.
But the settlement had been paid to a company called Northbridge Holdings.
I frowned.
"Who owns that?""
Michael checked.
"Peter Lawson.""
I closed my eyes.
It was all connected.
My brother's insurance money.
My mother's settlement.
My father's trust.
Daniel's company.
Vanessa's property business.
The money wasn't simply disappearing.
Someone had been systematically moving assets out of the Bennett family for years.
And Daniel had become part of the operation.
"Was my mother aware?"" I asked.
Evelyn studied the photograph.
"I think she may have been trying to expose it.""
"Then why didn't she tell me?""
"Perhaps she was afraid.""
I looked down.
My mother had been the strongest woman I knew.
She had taught me to ride a bicycle.
She had sat beside my hospital bed when I had my tonsils removed.
She had told me that a person could lose money, a house, or a business, but should never lose the courage to ask questions.
I had always believed she died without knowing how much Daniel had betrayed me.
Now I wondered whether she had died trying to protect me from something far worse.
My phone rang.
An unfamiliar number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice spoke.
"Mara?""
I froze.
I knew that voice.
It was older.
Rougher.
But unmistakable.
"Mom?""
There was a long silence.
Then she whispered:
"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""
I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.
"Mom? Where are you?""
Evelyn looked up.
I put the phone on speaker.
My mother began crying.
"I don't have much time. You need to listen.""
"You're alive?""
"Yes.""
I pressed a hand against my mouth.
"Where have you been?""
"I'll explain everything. But first, you need to understand that Daniel isn't the person who started this.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who did?""
"Peter.""
"Peter Lawson?""
"Yes.""
I looked at Evelyn.
She was already recording the call through her legal system.
My mother continued.
"Your father discovered that Peter had been stealing from the family accounts. James found evidence and confronted him.""
I felt my throat close.
"Is that why James died?""
A long silence followed.
Then my mother said:
"I don't know whether Peter caused the accident. But I know the investigation was compromised.""
I couldn't breathe.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Peter threatened you.""
I closed my eyes.
"What?""
"He knew you were pregnant with Daniel's child. He said if I spoke, you would lose everything.""
My knees weakened.
I sat down.
My mother continued.
"After your father died, Peter convinced Daniel that the trust could be taken apart. Daniel wanted the money. Vanessa wanted the property. But Peter wanted something much bigger.""
"What?""
"The original Bennett controlling documents.""
Evelyn leaned closer.
"Elaine, do you know where those documents are?""
My mother paused.
"Yes.""
"Where?""
"With me.""
I looked at Evelyn.
My mother continued.
"Your father gave me the original shareholder register before he died. He told me to keep it somewhere nobody would look.""
"Where are you?""
"At a small property in Vermont. I've been living under another name.""
I felt tears running down my cheeks.
"Mom, why didn't you come home?""
"Because I was afraid they'd come for you.""
I looked at Lily's photograph on my phone.
My mother had never met her granddaughter.
She had missed her birth.
Her first smile.
Her first three months.
I whispered:
"Mom, I have a daughter.""
"I know.""
Her voice broke.
"I've seen the pictures.""
I covered my mouth.
"Then why didn't you call?""
"Because I didn't know whether the phone was safe.""
Evelyn interrupted gently.
"Elaine, we need to arrange a secure meeting. Do you have the original register?""
"Yes. And something else.""
"What?""
"A recording.""
My mother took a breath.
"Peter admitted that James's accident wasn't an accident.""
I felt the room disappear.
Evelyn stood.
"Elaine, are you certain?""
"I heard him. He was speaking to Daniel. They thought I had left the house.""
"What did he say?""
My mother began crying harder.
"He said James had found the offshore accounts. He said they couldn't let him expose the money before the company transfer.""
I gripped the desk.
"Mom, are you saying they killed James?""
"I don't know everything. But I have the recording.""
I could barely speak.
"Send it to us.""
"I will. But Mara, there's one more thing.""
"What?""
"Your father didn't leave you sixty-two percent of Carter Development because he wanted you to control the company.""
I frowned.
"Then why?""
"Because the company was never supposed to belong to Daniel.""
I looked at Evelyn.
My mother continued.
"Your father created a second trust. One that holds the rights to every major property developed using Bennett family capital.""
I swallowed.
"What does that mean?""
"It means the new headquarters Daniel is celebrating? The building isn't his.""
Evelyn's expression changed.
"Who owns it?""
My mother answered.
"You do, Mara. Through the family trust.""
I stared at the phone.
The building.
The company.
The property Vanessa had been celebrating.
All of it.
My father had structured the ownership so that Daniel could manage the business, but never control the underlying assets.
And if Peter had used those assets to move stolen money, the entire operation could be exposed.
My mother gave us the location of the original documents.
Then she said something that made my blood turn cold.
"One more thing, sweetheart.""
"Yes?""
"Peter knows I'm alive.""
Before I could ask how she knew, I heard a crash on her end of the line.
A man's voice shouted something.
My mother screamed.
Then the call went dead.
I stood frozen.
Evelyn grabbed her phone.
"Michael, contact the authorities. We need a welfare check at the location immediately.""
I looked at my screen.
The call had ended.
Then a message arrived.
From my mother.
Don't come looking for me. Protect Lily.
A second message followed.
The original register has a red ribbon. The last page contains the name of the person who ordered everything.
And then my phone rang again.
This time, it was Daniel.
I answered.
He didn't say hello.
May you like
He said:
"Your mother should have stayed dead.""
