Chapter 6: The Fortune They Stole From My Daughter
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
The elevator doors opened, but I remained frozen, staring at the email on my phone.
Lily Carter.
My daughter's name.
A $4.8 million property transaction.
And my signature authorizing it.
"Evelyn," I whispered, "what does this mean?""
She pressed the elevator button again.
"It means someone has been using your daughter's identity in a financial arrangement. We need to determine whether Lily was made the beneficiary of a trust, whether her name was used to conceal ownership, or both.""
"But she's three months old.""
"I know.""
"She can't own anything without me knowing.""
Evelyn looked directly at me.
"That's exactly what we need to establish.""
We returned to her office.
Within twenty minutes, three people were on a conference call: Evelyn, a forensic accountant named Michael Grant, and a trust specialist who had worked with my father.
Michael shared his screen.
"Here's what we found," he said.
A spreadsheet appeared.
Several transactions were highlighted.
"The property was purchased through a special-purpose company called Lily Carter Holdings LLC. The company was registered seven weeks ago.""
I frowned.
"Who owns it?""
"According to the filing, Lily is the sole beneficial owner.""
"Who manages it?""
Michael hesitated.
"Daniel Carter and Vanessa Reed.""
I felt sick.
"How can two adults manage a company belonging to an infant?""
"That's possible through a custodial arrangement," Evelyn explained.
"But the arrangement must be properly authorized, and the source of funds must be legitimate.""
Michael continued.
"There's another issue. The company received $4.8 million through a series of transfers originating from Carter Development and two accounts associated with the Bennett Family Trust.""
I gripped the edge of my desk.
"How much of that money belonged to me?""
"We're still tracing it.""
"Michael, I need an answer.""
He looked at the screen.
"At least $1.9 million appears to have originated from assets controlled by your trust.""
I closed my eyes.
Daniel had stolen from me.
Then he had used our daughter's name to make it look like he was protecting her future.
It was almost brilliant.
Almost.
"Why would he do this?"" I asked.
Evelyn answered carefully.
"Because money held for a minor beneficiary can be difficult to access without proper legal authority. If Daniel and Vanessa established themselves as custodians, they may have intended to control the assets while claiming the money was being held for Lily.""
"So they could spend it?""
"If the arrangement was fraudulent, yes. They could attempt to move money through the property company while hiding the true beneficiaries.""
I looked at the transaction records.
There were payments to contractors.
Interior designers.
A luxury furniture company.
A private security firm.
And one payment labeled:
Reed Family Residence Renovation.
I almost couldn't believe it.
"They were renovating a house with Lily's money?""
Michael nodded.
"That's what the current records suggest.""
My phone rang.
Emma.
I answered immediately.
"Is Lily okay?""
"She's sleeping," my sister replied.
"Why?""
"Don't let anyone take her. Not Daniel. Not anyone claiming to be from his office.""
Emma's voice changed.
"Mara, what happened?""
"I'll explain later. Just promise me.""
"I promise.""
I hung up.
Evelyn had already begun drafting an emergency application to freeze the property company's accounts.
"There's one more thing," Michael said.
He opened a separate file.
"The company used an authorization code connected to your electronic identity.""
I stared at him.
"Again?""
"Yes. The same verification system used in the disputed share transfer.""
"Can you tell when it was accessed?""
He read the timestamp.
"October 14. At 10:18 a.m.""
I remembered that morning.
Daniel had brought me coffee.
He had kissed my forehead.
He had asked me to confirm some documents on his laptop.
I had been seven months pregnant.
I had trusted him enough to enter my security code without reading every page.
He had used that trust to steal my signature.
But Michael wasn't finished.
"The authorization originated from a device registered to Vanessa Reed.""
Evelyn slowly lowered her pen.
"Are you certain?""
"We have the device identifier and the access logs.""
I stared at the screen.
Vanessa had been in our house.
She had been inside my father's study.
She had accessed my electronic identity.
And now she had used my daughter's name.
I remembered the way she had touched my engagement ring.
The way she had smiled when I signed the delivery confirmation.
She hadn't been a woman who accidentally fell in love with a married man.
She had been planning something.
"Freeze everything," I said.
Evelyn nodded.
"We're already moving.""
At 5:20 p.m., the emergency application was submitted.
At 6:03 p.m., the court issued a temporary preservation order covering the identified accounts and property interests.
At 6:17 p.m., Michael received another alert.
Someone had attempted to withdraw $750,000 from Lily Carter Holdings.
The transaction had been blocked.
The request came from Daniel's office.
I sat back in my chair.
"He knows.""
Evelyn looked at me.
"Yes.""
My phone began vibrating.
Daniel.
I ignored it.
Then a message appeared.
What have you done?
Another followed.
You had no right to freeze those accounts.
Then:
That's Lily's money. You're hurting your own daughter.
I read the last message twice.
Then I typed.
If it's Lily's money, why were you trying to withdraw $750,000?
He didn't reply.
Instead, he called again.
This time, I answered.
"What?""
His voice exploded through the speaker.
"Unfreeze the accounts!""
"No.""
"You don't understand what you've done.""
"I understand that you tried to take three-quarters of a million dollars from a company registered to our daughter.""
"It's for the property!""
"What property?""
"The house Vanessa and I are buying!""
I went silent.
He had just admitted it.
Evelyn, sitting across from me, wrote something down.
Daniel continued.
"That property was supposed to be part of a long-term investment.""
"Then why were you withdrawing the money before the purchase was approved?""
"Because you're making everything impossible!""
I took a slow breath.
"Daniel, did you use Lily's identity to buy a house for Vanessa?""
He didn't answer.
"Daniel?""
"Don't do this.""
"Did you?""
His voice dropped.
"You're going to destroy your daughter's future over your jealousy.""
I felt something inside me go still.
"My daughter doesn't need a house bought with stolen money. She needs a father who doesn't use her identity as a bank account.""
He hung up.
Evelyn looked at me.
"That call needs to be preserved.""
I nodded.
Then Michael sent another email.
It contained an attachment.
A property purchase agreement.
I opened it.
The property was a sprawling estate outside Chicago, complete with a swimming pool, a guesthouse, and a private security entrance.
The purchase price was $4.8 million.
The intended occupants were listed as Daniel Carter and Vanessa Reed.
But the buyer was Lily Carter Holdings LLC.
At the bottom was an additional clause.
Upon completion, the managing custodians shall have exclusive authority over all property-related financial decisions until the beneficiary reaches the age of twenty-five.
I stared at the words.
Twenty-five.
They had planned to control my daughter's money for more than two decades.
Evelyn leaned over my shoulder.
"Mara, look at the date.""
I did.
The purchase agreement had been signed two weeks before Lily was born.
Before I had even delivered her.
Before Daniel had looked into my eyes and told me that becoming a father was the greatest thing that had ever happened to him.
My hands began trembling.
He had planned this while I was preparing the nursery.
And there was one final attachment.
A private email between Daniel and Vanessa.
The subject line was:
Once the baby arrives.
I opened it.
Daniel had written:
Once Lily is born, Mara will be too exhausted to challenge anything. We'll move the assets into the custodial structure before she realizes what happened.
Vanessa's response was one sentence.
And if she finds out?
Daniel had answered:
She won't. By then, she'll be out of the picture.
I read the sentence again.
Then I looked at Evelyn.
"Out of the picture?""
Evelyn closed the file.
"We're going to find out exactly what he meant.""
My phone buzzed.
A message from Emma.
Mara, Daniel is outside my house.
Then another.
He says he has a court order allowing him to take Lily for the weekend.
My heart stopped.
Because I knew something Daniel didn't.
The emergency order had already frozen the custodial arrangement.
And if he was carrying a court document claiming otherwise, it could only mean one thing.
May you like
He had filed something else.
Something without telling us.
