Chapter 4: The Dead Man's Signature
The next morning, Evelyn arrived at my house carrying a leather briefcase and two coffees.
She didn't sit down immediately.
Instead, she placed a stack of documents on the kitchen counter.
"Have you spoken to anyone about this?""
"No.""
"Good. Keep it that way.""
I looked at the papers.
"What are these?""
"Copies of the original trust documents, the disputed transfer, and Arthur Cole's death certificate.""
I stared at the last page.
Arthur had died in March of the previous year.
The disputed document was dated July.
Four months after his death.
"How could Daniel be so careless?""
Evelyn removed her coat.
"People become careless when they believe nobody will challenge them.""
She opened her laptop.
"The signature itself appears to be a reproduction. We have a forensic document examiner reviewing it. But I want to understand how Daniel obtained the original files.""
I sat down.
"He had access to the home office.""
"Who else?""
"Vanessa visited sometimes.""
Evelyn looked up.
"Visited your home?""
"Before Lily was born. Daniel said she was helping him with company paperwork.""
She wrote something down.
"Did she have access to your father's documents?""
"I don't know.""
I remembered something.
A week before Lily's delivery, I had come downstairs and found Vanessa in my father's old study.
She had been standing beside the locked filing cabinet.
When I asked what she was doing, she said Daniel had asked her to collect a contract.
At the time, I hadn't thought anything of it.
Now I remembered how quickly she had closed the drawer.
"Evelyn?""
"Yes?""
"Vanessa was in my father's study.""
Her pen stopped.
"When?""
"About four months ago.""
"Was that around the time of the disputed document?""
I nodded.
Evelyn looked at the date.
"Exactly.""
She made another note.
Then my phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered cautiously.
"Hello?""
A man's voice came through.
"Mara? This is David Cole.""
I straightened.
"David?""
Arthur's son.
I hadn't spoken to him in almost a year.
"Your attorney contacted me about a document bearing my father's signature.""
I looked at Evelyn.
"Yes. We believe it was falsified.""
David exhaled.
"I thought you should know something. Before my father died, he told me to keep an eye on Daniel.""
My stomach tightened.
"Why?""
"He said Daniel had started asking unusual questions about the trust.""
I felt a chill move through me.
"What kind of questions?""
"Who could authorize transfers. Whether the trust could be dissolved. Whether a beneficiary could be removed.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did your father tell you anything else?""
"Yes. He said if Daniel ever approached me with paperwork, I should call you immediately.""
"Did Daniel contact you?""
"Last month.""
I sat completely still.
"What did he want?""
"He asked whether I still had copies of my father's old signature records. He said he needed them for a legal filing.""
I looked at Evelyn.
She mouthed, Record everything.
I continued.
"What did you tell him?""
"I told him I didn't have anything.""
"Did you?""
David hesitated.
"Actually, yes. My father left me a sealed envelope. He told me not to open it unless something happened to the Bennett trust.""
My heart began pounding.
"What's inside?""
"I haven't opened it yet.""
"Can you bring it to Evelyn's office?""
"I can come this afternoon.""
When the call ended, Evelyn stood.
"We need to preserve that envelope and have it delivered directly to counsel.""
I nodded.
Then she looked at me.
"Mara, I need you to understand something. This is no longer just a divorce dispute. If someone deliberately forged documents to transfer trust-controlled assets, we may be dealing with financial misconduct beyond the marriage.""
I looked toward the stairs.
Lily was awake.
Her small cry drifted down the hallway.
"I just wanted to raise my daughter.""
Evelyn's expression softened.
"I know.""
"I didn't want to fight anyone.""
"Then don't. Let us do the fighting.""
At 2:00 p.m., David arrived at Evelyn's office.
He looked older than I remembered.
His father had been his whole world.
He carried a sealed manila envelope with both hands.
"This is the one," he said.
Evelyn examined the seal.
It was intact.
She photographed it before opening it.
Inside were three pages and a small flash drive.
The first page was a letter addressed to me.
I recognized my father's handwriting immediately.
Mara, if you're reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.
My throat tightened.
Evelyn placed a tissue box beside me.
I began reading.
Your husband is ambitious. Ambition is not a crime. But ambition without honesty can become dangerous.
I swallowed.
I have made arrangements to protect your inheritance, but paperwork cannot protect you from someone who has access to your home, your passwords, and your trust.
I felt my eyes burn.
My father had known.
Maybe not about Vanessa.
Maybe not about the affair.
But he had seen something in Daniel that I had refused to see.
The letter continued.
If Daniel ever attempts to transfer the controlling interest in Carter Development, ask Evelyn to examine the original shareholder register. Do not rely on the digital copies.
I looked up.
"The original register?""
Evelyn nodded.
She reached for the flash drive.
"Let's see what's on here.""
The drive contained scanned documents, financial correspondence, and several audio recordings.
One file was dated two weeks before my father's death.
Evelyn opened it.
My father's voice filled the room.
"Daniel, I want you to understand this clearly. The company can operate under your leadership, but you do not own the controlling interest.""
A second voice answered.
Daniel.
"I understand, Richard.""
My father continued.
"Your wife will inherit the voting rights. That arrangement is not temporary.""
Daniel gave a short laugh.
"Of course.""
Then my father's voice became stern.
"And if you ever try to circumvent it, the board has instructions to remove you.""
The recording ended.
I stared at the screen.
Daniel had known.
He had always known.
He had simply believed I would never discover what the documents meant.
Evelyn opened another file.
It was an email exchange between my father and Arthur.
The subject line read:
Concerns Regarding Daniel Carter.
My father's message contained one sentence that made me grip the edge of the desk.
I believe he may eventually attempt to use Mara's trust for his own benefit.
Then came Arthur's reply.
I agree. But I have discovered something more troubling. Vanessa Reed has already been requesting access to records she has no authority to see.
David looked stunned.
"Vanessa?""
Evelyn scrolled further.
The final attachment was a handwritten note.
My father had written it three days before his death.
If they ever come for the company together, look at the property account. The truth is there.
Evelyn read it twice.
"The property account," she repeated.
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
She searched the files.
A spreadsheet appeared.
It contained dozens of property transactions, loans, and internal transfers.
One account number appeared repeatedly.
A company called Reed Holdings.
I looked at David.
"Is that connected to Vanessa?""
He nodded slowly.
"Her family owns a real estate investment group.""
Evelyn opened the latest transaction record.
Then she stopped moving.
"What is it?"" I asked.
She turned the screen toward me.
A property had been purchased through Reed Holdings six weeks earlier.
A commercial building in downtown Chicago.
The purchase price was $4.8 million.
The funding source was listed as Carter Development.
But the transaction had been authorized through a trust-controlled account.
My father's money.
My inheritance.
I stared at the amount.
Then I noticed the purchaser's signature.
Vanessa Reed.
She hadn't simply taken my ring.
She had been buying property with money connected to my family.
And Daniel had helped her.
Evelyn closed the laptop.
"We have enough to request an emergency injunction.""
"Can we stop them?""
"We can try.""
My phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
I know you've been talking to David Cole. Stay out of company matters. This is your final warning.
I showed it to Evelyn.
She read it.
Then she looked at me.
"Don't reply.""
A second message arrived.
This one was from Vanessa.
It contained a photograph.
She was standing in front of a large modern office building, smiling beside Daniel.
The caption read:
Some people lose everything because they don't know when to let go.
I stared at the picture.
Then I zoomed in.
Behind them, on the building's glass entrance, was a gold plaque.
*CARTER DEVELOPMENT — NEW HEADQUARTERS.*
I recognized the building.
It was the same property purchased through Reed Holdings.
May you like
And the company had just announced its grand opening.
Tomorrow.
