Chapter 5: The Woman Who Thought She Had Won

The invitation arrived at 9:06 the following morning.

A formal email from Carter Development's public relations department.

*You are cordially invited to the opening of our new headquarters.*

The message included a photograph of Daniel and Vanessa standing beneath the company's logo.

Vanessa wore a white designer dress.

Daniel wore a dark navy suit.

They looked like a couple celebrating an engagement.

At the bottom was a note.

We are proud to welcome our new executive director, Vanessa Reed.

I read it twice.

Then I forwarded it to Evelyn.

Her response came less than a minute later.

Do not attend without me.

I looked at Lily, who was lying on her play mat, kicking her feet beneath a pink blanket.

I wanted to stay home.

I wanted to spend the day feeding her, changing her diapers, and pretending that my marriage had not turned into a nightmare.

But I also knew something.

Daniel believed I was finished.

He believed I would cry, sign the papers, accept the support he offered, and disappear quietly.

He had made that assumption because he had spent years confusing my patience with weakness.

I wasn't going to let him make that mistake again.

At eleven, I called Evelyn.

"I want to go.""

She was quiet.

"Are you sure?""

"Yes.""

"Then we go prepared.""

By 1:30 p.m., I was standing in front of my bedroom mirror.

I wore a simple black dress.

Nothing expensive.

Nothing dramatic.

My hair was tied back, and I wore the small gold earrings my father had given me on my twenty-first birthday.

Lily was staying with my sister, Emma.

Before leaving, I kissed her forehead.

"Mommy will be back soon.""

She made a little sound and curled her fingers around mine.

For a moment, I almost changed my mind.

Then I remembered the six hundred thousand dollars.

The forged signature.

The dead man's name.

And the property purchased with money that belonged to my family.

I left.

The new Carter Development headquarters occupied twelve floors of a glass building overlooking the river.

When Evelyn and I entered the lobby, photographers were already taking pictures.

Employees moved around with champagne glasses.

A large screen displayed Daniel's face beside the words:

*A NEW ERA OF CARTER DEVELOPMENT.*

I stopped walking.

Evelyn touched my arm.

"Keep your expression neutral.""

"I am.""

"Your jaw says otherwise.""

I almost smiled.

Then I saw Vanessa.

She was standing near the reception desk, greeting guests.

Her hair fell in perfect waves over her shoulders.

She wore my engagement ring.

And she was holding a champagne glass with the confidence of someone who believed the building belonged to her.

When she saw me, her smile froze.

"Mara.""

I nodded.

"Vanessa.""

She glanced at Evelyn.

"I didn't know you were invited.""

"I wasn't," I said.

"Then I'm afraid this is a private company event.""

Evelyn stepped forward.

"Actually, my client is a controlling shareholder of Carter Development. I believe that makes her attendance rather appropriate.""

Vanessa's fingers tightened around her glass.

"That's not how things work anymore.""

"Really?"" Evelyn asked.

"Perhaps you can explain the new arrangement.""

Vanessa looked toward the elevator.

Daniel appeared moments later.

He was speaking to two investors when he noticed us.

His smile vanished.

He excused himself and walked over.

"What are you doing here?""

I looked around the lobby.

"Beautiful building.""

"Answer my question.""

"I received an invitation.""

"From whom?""

"Your company.""

His jaw tightened.

"You're not welcome here.""

Evelyn opened her briefcase.

"That's an interesting statement, Mr. Carter.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Not now.""

"Actually, now is an excellent time.""

She handed him an envelope.

He didn't take it.

"What is that?""

"Notice of the trust's objection to the unauthorized share transfer, along with a demand for preservation of relevant financial records.""

Daniel stared at her.

Then he took the envelope.

He opened it.

His face changed as he read.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"What is it?""

"Nothing.""

Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

"Nothing that requires your attention?""

Daniel folded the document.

"This is a private business matter.""

"Then you shouldn't have used my client's signature to authorize it.""

Vanessa's champagne glass stopped halfway to her mouth.

Daniel looked at me.

"You told her?""

I didn't answer.

Evelyn continued.

"The trust has also requested an emergency review of the property transactions involving Reed Holdings.""

Vanessa went pale.

"Those transactions were legitimate.""

Evelyn looked at her.

"Then you should have no difficulty providing the supporting invoices.""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"Daniel told me everything was approved.""

I looked at her.

"Did he also tell you that he didn't own the company?""

Her face changed.

Daniel stepped between us.

"That's enough.""

I looked directly at him.

"Is it?""

He lowered his voice.

"You're embarrassing yourself.""

I glanced toward the photographers.

"Then perhaps you shouldn't have invited the press.""

One of them had turned in our direction.

Daniel noticed.

He stepped closer.

"Listen to me. You have no idea what you're interfering with.""

I held his gaze.

"I know exactly what I'm interfering with.""

He leaned closer.

"You think your father's money makes you untouchable?""

"No.""

I paused.

"But I think your dishonesty makes you vulnerable.""

For a second, neither of us moved.

Then a man approached.

He was in his late fifties, with silver hair and a navy suit.

I recognized him immediately.

Robert Hayes.

The chairman of Carter Development's board.

He had attended my wedding.

He had visited my father during his final months.

And he was one of the few people who knew the truth about the company's ownership.

"Daniel," Robert said.

Daniel turned.

"Robert. We're handling something.""

Robert glanced at Evelyn.

Then at me.

"Ms. Bennett.""

I nodded.

"Mr. Hayes.""

He looked at the envelope in Daniel's hand.

"Have you received the notice?""

Daniel's face hardened.

"Yes.""

"Good. The board has called an emergency meeting.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"An emergency meeting? Why?""

Robert looked at her.

"Because your appointment as executive director was based on a share transfer that the company cannot currently verify.""

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"That's ridiculous. Daniel approved it.""

Robert didn't react.

"Daniel does not have authority to approve a transfer of controlling trust interests.""

The words seemed to drain the color from Vanessa's face.

She turned toward Daniel.

"You told me you owned the company.""

Daniel said nothing.

She looked back at Robert.

"Are you saying my appointment is invalid?""

"I'm saying it is under review.""

Her champagne glass slipped slightly in her hand.

Daniel grabbed her elbow.

"Let's go upstairs.""

But Robert wasn't finished.

"One more thing, Daniel.""

He opened a second folder.

"The board has also received evidence concerning several unauthorized transfers to Reed Holdings.""

Vanessa's mouth fell open.

"Those were consulting fees.""

"Then the accounting department will be pleased to review the contracts.""

Daniel looked at me.

His eyes were full of anger.

I had seen that look before.

Usually when I questioned something he wanted me to accept without explanation.

But this time, he wasn't looking at a frightened wife.

He was looking at a problem he couldn't control.

"You're destroying everything," he whispered.

I looked at him.

"No, Daniel. I'm asking why you used our daughter's future to finance your girlfriend's new office.""

Vanessa suddenly turned toward him.

"Our daughter's future?""

Daniel grabbed her arm more firmly.

"Not here.""

She pulled away.

"Don't touch me.""

For the first time, they weren't standing together.

They were standing against each other.

And I understood something.

Their relationship had been built on a fantasy.

Daniel had promised Vanessa a company he didn't own.

Vanessa had believed she was becoming the wife of a powerful businessman.

Neither had considered what would happen when the truth arrived.

Robert turned toward Evelyn.

"The board will meet at four. We would appreciate your client's presence.""

Evelyn nodded.

"She'll attend.""

Daniel looked at me one last time.

"You don't know what you're doing.""

I adjusted the strap of my handbag.

"Neither did you, apparently.""

I walked toward the elevators with Evelyn.

Behind us, I heard Vanessa whispering furiously.

"Daniel, you told me the shares were yours.""

He answered too quietly for me to hear.

Then she said something that made me stop.

"Don't you dare blame me. You said the money was yours, too.""

I turned slightly.

Evelyn noticed.

"Keep walking," she whispered.

We entered the elevator.

As the doors closed, my phone vibrated.

An email from the forensic accountant.

Subject:

*URGENT: REED HOLDINGS — ADDITIONAL DISCOVERY*

I opened it.

The first paragraph explained that the six hundred thousand dollars transferred to Vanessa's companies was only part of the missing money.

There were additional payments.

Much larger ones.

One transfer alone exceeded $2.3 million.

But it was the final sentence that made my heart stop.

We have also identified a $4.8 million transaction involving a property purchased in the name of a minor beneficiary.

I read the sentence again.

A minor beneficiary.

Then I saw the name.

*LILY CARTER.*

My three-month-old daughter.

Someone had used Lily's identity in a financial transaction worth nearly five million dollars.

And beneath the transaction record was a signature authorizing the arrangement.

Mine.

I looked at Evelyn.

She read the screen.

Her face went completely still.

"Mara," she whispered, "I don't think Daniel was only trying to steal your inheritance.""

I felt my stomach twist.

"What else could he want?""

Evelyn slowly closed the elevator doors.

"Your daughter's inheritance.""

And suddenly, I understood why Daniel had been so eager to arrange custody.

He hadn't simply wanted to leave his wife.

May you like

He wanted access to everything she would one day inherit.

Including the little girl sleeping peacefully at my sister's house.
