Chapter 7: He Came for His Daughter
I reached Emma's house in seventeen minutes.
I don't remember most of the drive.
I remember the red traffic lights.
I remember gripping the steering wheel so hard my fingers hurt.
And I remember repeating one sentence.
He is not taking my daughter.
When I pulled into Emma's driveway, Daniel's black SUV was parked near the garage.
He stood on the porch.
Beside him was a woman carrying a leather briefcase.
A court officer.
Emma opened the door before I reached it.
"Mara!""
I rushed inside.
Lily was in her nursery, sleeping in her crib.
I picked her up immediately.
Her warm little body settled against my chest.
"You're okay," I whispered.
"Mommy's here.""
Emma stood behind me.
"He said he had an emergency custody order.""
"Did you see it?""
"Yes.""
She handed me a photograph.
The document appeared to be a temporary parenting order signed by a judge.
It authorized Daniel to take Lily for a seventy-two-hour period.
My stomach turned.
Evelyn arrived moments later.
She examined the document.
Then she frowned.
"This is not a custody order.""
"What?""
"It's a request for temporary access filed by Daniel's attorney. It hasn't been approved by the judge.""
I stared at her.
"So he lied?""
"He presented a pending application as an enforceable order.""
Evelyn walked toward the front door.
Daniel was still outside.
When he saw us, he straightened.
"Finally.""
Evelyn held up the document.
"Mr. Carter, this does not authorize you to remove the child.""
Daniel looked annoyed.
"That's between me and my daughter.""
"No. It is a matter before the court. You cannot represent an unapproved filing as an enforceable order.""
The court officer examined the document.
He looked at Daniel.
"Sir, did you tell me this had been signed?""
Daniel hesitated.
"My attorney said it was being processed.""
"That isn't what I asked.""
Vanessa's voice came from behind Daniel.
"Can we please stop making this dramatic?""
I looked at her.
She was standing beside the SUV in a beige coat.
Her hair was tied back.
Her left hand was bare.
For the first time since I had seen her, she wasn't wearing my ring.
I wondered where she had put it.
Then I remembered I didn't care.
"Why are you here?"" I asked.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Daniel wants to spend time with his daughter.""
"He could have arranged a visit through the proper process.""
"He shouldn't need permission from you.""
I looked at her.
"You are not Lily's parent.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Not yet.""
The words hung in the air.
Daniel turned sharply.
"Vanessa.""
She looked away.
I felt a cold sensation spread through my chest.
Not yet.
She had actually said it.
As if she expected to become Lily's mother.
As if she had already imagined a future in which I was no longer present.
Evelyn stepped between us.
"Mr. Carter, you need to leave. All communication concerning custody must go through counsel.""
Daniel looked at me.
"You've poisoned everyone against me.""
I adjusted Lily in my arms.
"No, Daniel. You did that yourself.""
He stepped closer.
"I am her father.""
"Then start acting like it.""
His face reddened.
"You think you can keep her from me forever?""
"No. I think you can earn a relationship with her by behaving like a responsible adult.""
The court officer cleared his throat.
"Mr. Carter, I'm advising you to leave the property.""
Daniel stared at him.
Then he turned toward Vanessa.
"Come on.""
She didn't move.
"Daniel, we need to talk.""
"Not now.""
"Yes, now.""
He grabbed her arm.
She pulled away.
"Don't touch me!""
Emma stepped behind me.
The argument continued on the porch.
"You told me everything was approved," Vanessa said.
"It was supposed to be!""
"You told me the accounts were safe.""
"They were until Mara got involved.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Don't blame her because you forged her signature.""
Daniel went completely still.
I looked at Evelyn.
She had heard it too.
So had the court officer.
"Vanessa," Daniel warned.
But she wasn't finished.
"You said the trust couldn't touch the property once the purchase closed. You said we had already secured the money.""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Shut up.""
Vanessa stepped back.
"You promised me a company. You promised me a house. You promised me everything.""
I stood in the doorway, holding Lily.
"Did he promise you my father's money, too?""
Vanessa looked at me.
For the first time, she seemed genuinely afraid.
Daniel turned toward the SUV.
"Get in.""
She didn't.
Instead, she reached into her handbag and removed her phone.
"I have something you need to know," she said.
Daniel's face changed.
"Don't.""
She looked at me.
"I kept copies.""
"Of what?"" I asked.
"Everything.""
Daniel lunged toward her phone.
The court officer immediately stepped between them.
"Sir!""
Vanessa backed away.
"I have the emails. The recordings. The original transfer documents.""
Evelyn's expression sharpened.
"Are you willing to provide them to counsel?""
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
"Yes.""
Daniel laughed harshly.
"You think anyone will believe you?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"You told me Mara was unstable. You told me she didn't understand the company. You said her father had left everything under your control.""
"Because you wanted to believe it.""
"I believed you because you showed me the documents!""
He pointed at her.
"You signed them too.""
Vanessa swallowed.
"I didn't know they were forged.""
Daniel looked at her with open contempt.
"You're lying.""
The court officer ordered him to step back.
He finally walked toward his vehicle.
Before getting inside, he looked at me.
"This isn't over.""
I held Lily closer.
"For me, it already is.""
His car disappeared down the street.
Vanessa remained on the porch.
She looked exhausted.
Her perfect appearance had fallen apart.
Mascara streaked beneath her eyes.
Her coat hung open.
And the diamond ring was gone.
"Can I speak to you?"" she asked.
I didn't answer.
Evelyn stepped forward.
"Anything you want to disclose should be given through my office.""
Vanessa nodded.
Then she looked at me.
"I didn't know he was still in love with you.""
I stared at her.
That was what she wanted to discuss?
"That's your concern?""
"No. I mean—"
"Vanessa, you wore my engagement ring into my home while I was holding my newborn daughter.""
She lowered her eyes.
"He told me you were already separated.""
"Did he tell you that when I was pregnant?""
She said nothing.
"Did he tell you that when Lily was born?""
Her face crumpled.
I continued.
"You knew I was his wife. You knew he had a baby. You knew exactly what you were doing.""
"I loved him.""
I shook my head.
"Then you should have known him better.""
She began crying.
But I felt no sympathy.
Not because I enjoyed seeing her suffer.
Because my daughter had been placed at the center of a financial scheme, and this woman was only now regretting it because the scheme had failed.
Evelyn gave Vanessa her business card.
"If you have evidence, preserve it. Do not alter, delete, or distribute anything. Contact my office.""
Vanessa nodded.
Then she walked away.
That evening, Evelyn and I reviewed the documents Vanessa had promised to provide.
The first email showed Daniel discussing the share transfer.
The second showed Vanessa asking whether Mara's signature could be used without her knowledge.
Daniel's reply was chilling.
She signs whatever I put in front of her. She's never been interested in the details.
Then came a recording.
Daniel's voice.
Once the custody arrangement is settled, I'll be able to manage Lily's trust without Mara interfering.
Vanessa asked:
What if the court gives her primary custody?
Daniel laughed.
Then we'll make sure the court understands she's emotionally unstable.
I stared at the screen.
They had planned to use my postpartum recovery against me.
They had intended to portray me as an unfit mother while quietly taking control of my daughter's inheritance.
Evelyn paused the recording.
"Mara, this evidence changes everything.""
"Can we stop him?""
"Yes. But we need to know how far the scheme goes.""
She opened the final attachment Vanessa had provided.
It was a bank statement from a foreign account.
The account holder wasn't Daniel.
It wasn't Vanessa.
It was someone else.
Someone whose name I hadn't heard in years.
My stomach tightened.
"Who is that?""
Evelyn read the name.
Then she looked at me.
"Your brother.""
I stared at her.
My brother, James, had died six years earlier.
May you like
Yet his name appeared on an account containing $3.2 million.
And the account had received money only three days earlier.
