Chapter 9: The Truth Hidden in the Legal Files

“No.””

Elena’s voice was barely a whisper.

Not anger.

Not denial.

Fear.

I stared at her.

The woman who had stood beside me all day.

The woman who had helped me uncover the truth.

The woman who had held my mother’s secrets for six years.

My mind fought against what I was seeing.

Because some betrayals were easy to imagine.

Mauricio.

Paola.

Rafael.

They had all shown pieces of themselves.

But Elena?

No.

Elena was different.

She was the person my mother trusted.

The person who protected the trust.

The person who brought me the documents that started everything.

“You’re not involved,” I said.

It came out almost like a plea.

Not because I knew she was innocent.

Because I needed someone to be.

Elena looked at me.

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“Lucía…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Don’t say my name like you’re sorry.””

Her expression changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

And somehow that made it worse.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

Silence.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“Tell me.””

Elena looked down.

That was all the answer I needed.

My entire body went cold.

Rafael sighed.

“Now you understand.””

I turned toward him.

“Did you know?””

“Yes.””

“You knew Elena was involved?””

His jaw tightened.

“Not everything.””

“But something.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Mauricio.

He was standing completely still.

Almost like he had disappeared into the background.

But I saw him.

I saw the fear on his face.

“You knew too.””

Mauricio didn’t respond.

“Didn’t you?””

Finally, he whispered:

“Yes.””

The room felt like it was closing around me.

Everyone knew.

Everyone had known.

I was the only person living inside a lie.

“What did she do?””

Elena closed her eyes.

“Lucía…”

“What did you do?””

The question came out louder.

She took a breath.

“I made mistakes.””

I almost laughed.

Mistakes.

That word again.

A word people used when they wanted to make betrayal sound smaller.

“You don’t accidentally help someone destroy a family.””

Her face fell.

“You’re right.””

The honesty stopped me.

She didn’t defend herself.

She didn’t make excuses.

“I was wrong.””

“Why?””

She looked at the recorder.

Then at me.

“Because I thought I could control the damage.””

I shook my head.

“That sounds exactly like what my brother said.””

Her eyes moved slightly.

“He told you?””

“Yes.””

A painful silence followed.

Elena sat down slowly.

“I never wanted anyone hurt.””

“But they were.””

“I know.””

“My mother died.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

“My father died.””

“I know.””

“My marriage was a lie.””

“I know.””

Each sentence became heavier.

“And you still helped him.””

Elena looked at the floor.

“Yes.””

The word broke something inside me.

Not because I didn’t expect it.

Because I did.

But because hearing it made it real.

I walked toward the table.

“What did you change?””

Elena looked up.

“What?””

“What did you change in my documents?””

She hesitated.

Then answered:

“The marriage agreement.””

My stomach tightened.

“What about it?””

“Mauricio wanted access to the trust.””

“And?””

“I helped him create a legal pathway.””

I stared at her.

“You made it possible for him to take my mother’s money.””

“No.””

Her voice became urgent.

“I never gave him ownership.””

“Then what did you do?””

“I delayed the trust activation.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It meant Mauricio could not access the assets immediately.””

“But he could try.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Elena looked away.

“Because I thought I could stop him before it went that far.””

I stared at her.

“And if you failed?””

She didn’t answer.

Again.

Silence.

The answer.

My hands shook.

“You gambled with my life.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“You were trying to protect your plan.””

That hurt her.

I saw it.

Good.

Because I was finally allowing myself to see the people who hurt me.

Not as heroes.

Not as victims.

As people who made choices.

The front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A police officer entered.

“Ms. Salgado?””

I looked at him.

“Yes?””

“We need you to come with us.””

My heart jumped.

“Why?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“We received a report regarding financial fraud connected to Salgado Construction.””

Mauricio immediately stepped forward.

“What?””

The officer looked at him.

“Mr. Salgado, you are also being requested for questioning.””

His face changed.

“On what grounds?””

The officer held up a folder.

“Evidence of unauthorized transfers and falsified corporate records.””

Rafael laughed quietly.

“Mauricio.””

Mauricio turned.

“You told me everything was covered.””

The officer looked between them.

“Covered?””

Nobody answered.

The officer continued.

“Mr. Salgado, we also received evidence regarding an attempted custody manipulation case.””

My blood ran cold.

Custody.

Even before our child was born.

He had already prepared.

Mauricio looked at me.

“Lucía, I can explain.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

For once, I didn’t feel pain saying it.

Only certainty.

“No more explanations.””

He stared at me.

“I love you.””

The words felt empty.

“You loved what I represented.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then why did you spend ten years trying to convince me I was nothing without you?””

He had no answer.

The police officer stepped closer.

“Mr. Salgado.””

Mauricio looked at me one last time.

And then he said something that made everyone freeze.

“Lucía, ask Elena what happened after your mother died.””

I turned.

Elena’s face changed.

“What does that mean?””

Mauricio smiled sadly.

Not happily.

Desperately.

Like someone throwing a final weapon.

“You think she betrayed you once?””

Elena stood.

“Mauricio, don’t.””

He ignored her.

“She didn’t tell you the biggest secret.””

My heart started racing.

“What secret?””

Mauricio looked directly at Elena.

“Tell her.””

Elena said nothing.

“Tell her who was with your mother during her final hour.””

I felt dizzy.

“What?””

Elena’s eyes closed.

“Lucía…”

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“Tell me.””

Nobody moved.

Then Elena whispered:

“I was there.””

The room went silent.

“You were there when my mother died?””

“Yes.””

My hands went numb.

“And you never told me?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“No.””

“Why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because your mother asked me not to.””

I stared at her.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“She knew she was in danger.””

“Then why didn’t you save her?””

Elena looked devastated.

“Because I arrived too late.””

“Too late for what?””

Her voice dropped.

“To stop the person who pushed her.””

The room froze.

My breathing stopped.

“What?””

Elena looked at me.

“I saw the car.””

“No.””

“I saw your mother.””

“No.””

“And I saw who was standing beside her.””

I couldn’t move.

“Who?””

Elena looked toward Mauricio.

Then toward Rafael.

Then back at me.

“The person who caused your mother’s death…”

A tear fell down her face.

“…was someone your mother trusted with her own life.””

I waited.

I needed the name.

I needed the final piece.

Then Elena whispered:

“Your father’s old business partner.””

I frowned.

“My father’s business partner is dead.””

Elena looked at me.

“No.””

My blood ran cold.

“He isn’t.””

A silence followed.

Then she said the name.

The name I had never expected.

“The man who has been secretly controlling everything from the beginning…”

She opened her bag.

Pulled out a photograph.

And placed it on the table.

I looked down.

The face staring back at me made my entire world collapse.

Because the man in the picture was not a stranger.

Not an enemy.

Not someone from the past.

It was someone I had seen only hours earlier.

Someone who had walked into my house.

Someone who knew exactly where my mother hid the evidence.

My uncle.

Rafael Salgado.

But beneath the photograph was a second document.

A birth certificate.

And the name written there made my blood turn cold.

*Father: Rafael Salgado.*

*Mother: Camila Salgado.*

I looked up.

Confused.

Then I realized.

May you like

The child everyone thought was Mauricio’s…

Was not Mauricio’s at all.
