Chapter 1: The Woman They Tried to Break

“Don’t worry, everyone knows she’s just pretending.””

Those were the words my husband said while I was on my knees outside the courthouse, one hand pressed against the stone floor and the other wrapped protectively around my seven-month pregnant stomach.

For ten years, I believed Mauricio Salgado was the man who would stand between me and the world.

I never imagined he would become the person I needed protection from.

The morning started with rain clouds hanging over the city, the kind of gray sky that made every building look colder. I remember holding my coat tightly around my body as I walked toward the courthouse entrance, feeling my baby move gently beneath my ribs.

I had spent the entire night reading the divorce documents Mauricio’s lawyers had sent me.

Every page felt like a betrayal.

Not because he wanted a divorce.

Because of the lies.

According to Mauricio, I was unstable. Emotional. Dependent. A woman who had contributed nothing meaningful to the empire we built together.

The same company I had helped create from a small office with two employees had somehow become his achievement alone.

The same financial systems I designed to protect our millions had suddenly become “too complicated” for me to understand.

And the trust my mother left behind—the one thing she wanted me to have before she died—was something Mauricio claimed he had a right to control.

He thought I would be too hurt to fight.

He thought the woman who stayed silent for ten years would stay silent forever.

He was wrong.

I reached the courthouse steps and saw him immediately.

Mauricio stood beneath the entrance canopy wearing a perfectly tailored black suit. His hair was neatly styled. His expensive watch reflected the morning light.

Beside him stood Paola Castañeda.

His mistress.

The woman he had introduced to the world three weeks after filing for divorce.

She wore a red coat and matching heels, looking like she had walked onto a movie set instead of into a courtroom.

When her eyes met mine, she smiled.

Not kindly.

Like she had already won.

“Lucía,” Mauricio said, adjusting his jacket.

“You actually came.””

I stared at him.

“Of course I came.””

He tilted his head.

“I thought maybe your emotions would get the better of you.””

There it was again.

The same accusation he had written in legal documents.

The same weapon he had used for months.

Making people believe I was too emotional to be trusted.

Paola crossed her arms.

“Honestly, Mauricio, I don’t know why you’re still being patient with her.””

I looked at her.

“You don’t know anything about my marriage.””

She laughed softly.

“I know enough.””

Mauricio stepped closer.

“Lucía, don’t make today harder than it needs to be. Sign the agreement. Walk away peacefully.””

I almost laughed.

Peacefully.

That was what he called taking my home, my company shares, and my mother’s inheritance.

“You mean walk away with nothing,” I said.

His expression hardened.

“See? This is exactly what I’m talking about. You always turn everything into a fight.””

Before I could answer, a group of reporters near the courthouse entrance started moving closer.

Mauricio noticed them.

His expression changed instantly.

He loved appearing like a victim.

He loved making people believe he was the patient husband dealing with a difficult wife.

Paola noticed too.

She leaned toward me and whispered, “Don’t embarrass him today.””

I looked at her.

“Embarrass him?””

She smiled.

“You know what happens when people find out what kind of woman you really are.””

My stomach tightened.

Not because of fear.

Because I finally understood.

They weren’t trying to end a marriage.

They were trying to destroy me.

“You should be careful with your words,” I said quietly.

Paola rolled her eyes.

“Or what?””

Then everything happened so quickly that my mind struggled to process it.

One second, Paola was standing in front of me.

The next, she stepped forward.

Her red heel struck my stomach.

A sharp, brutal impact.

My breath disappeared.

The world tilted.

I fell sideways, grabbing the stone railing to stop myself from hitting the ground completely.

My hand immediately covered my stomach.

My baby.

My baby.

A wave of pain spread through me, and suddenly all the sounds around me became distant.

Someone screamed.

Someone shouted for help.

But the person I had spent ten years loving?

He laughed.

Mauricio laughed.

“Come on,” he said loudly.

“She’s always exaggerating.””

I looked up at him.

For a moment, I didn’t recognize his face.

This was the man who used to hold my hand during doctor appointments.

The man who cried when we heard our first child’s heartbeat.

The man who promised my mother on her hospital bed that he would protect me.

Now he stood there watching me struggle to breathe.

A police officer ran from the courthouse doors.

“Ma’am, don’t move!””

Paola immediately stepped backward.

Her confident expression disappeared.

“I barely touched her,” she said.

“She stepped into me.””

The officer looked at the scene.

Then he looked at me.

Then at my stomach.

“Did she strike you?””

I tried to answer, but pain made my voice shake.

“Yes.””

Mauricio immediately stepped in.

“Officer, please. My wife has always been dramatic.””

The officer turned toward him.

“Sir, I didn’t ask you.””

The silence that followed was heavier than the rain.

Mauricio’s jaw tightened.

Paola looked annoyed.

Like being questioned was an inconvenience.

I slowly pushed myself upright with the officer’s help.

“I want to file assault charges.””

Paola stared at me.

“For that?””

She pointed at my stomach.

“You’re acting like I attacked you.””

I looked directly at her.

“You don’t get to decide how much pain you caused.””

For the first time that morning, her smile disappeared.

Mauricio shook his head.

“This is exactly why everyone thinks she’s unstable.””

Everyone.

That word stayed with me.

Because Mauricio had spent years building that image.

At family dinners, he joked about my “moods.””

At business meetings, he interrupted me and later told people I was too sensitive.

When I discovered missing money from company accounts, he told everyone I was imagining things.

But I knew the truth.

And now, finally, I had proof.

The officer helped me sit down while another officer approached Paola.

“Ma’am, you need to stay here while we take statements.””

Paola looked at Mauricio.

“Do something.””

He stared at her.

For a second, I saw panic in his eyes.

Not concern for me.

Fear for himself.

Because he knew something.

He knew if this became a legal matter, people would start asking questions.

Questions about the company.

Questions about the accounts.

Questions about why his mistress had access to private financial documents.

Questions about why he had suddenly rushed to divorce me after ten years.

The courthouse doors opened.

A woman in a gray suit stepped outside.

She was older, elegant, and carrying a folder against her chest.

She looked at me first.

Then at Mauricio.

Her expression changed.

“Mr. Salgado,” she said.

Mauricio froze.

“Attorney Velázquez.””

The woman walked toward us slowly.

“I was looking for you.””

Mauricio forced a smile.

“Is this really the time?””

She ignored him.

Instead, she looked down at the papers in her hand.

Then she looked at me.

“Lucía, I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Find out what?””

She opened the folder.

Inside was a document with a familiar name.

My mother’s trust.

The trust Mauricio had been trying to control.

The trust he claimed belonged to our marital assets.

Attorney Velázquez took a breath.

“Your mother left very specific instructions.””

Mauricio’s face turned pale.

“Don’t.””

Everyone went quiet.

The attorney looked directly at him.

“Your wife was never a dependent spouse.””

She turned the document around.

“She is the controlling beneficiary of the entire family fortune.””

For the first time in ten years, Mauricio looked afraid.

And then Attorney Velázquez said the words that changed everything.

“Also, Lucía… your mother included one condition that takes effect if anyone attempts to manipulate you financially.””

She looked at Mauricio.

“That condition was triggered three weeks ago.””

I stared at the document.

“What condition?””

The attorney’s eyes moved toward the courthouse doors.

“The one that removes Mauricio Salgado from every position of power he currently holds.””

And behind Mauricio’s shocked expression, I realized something.

The divorce was never going to be my downfall.

It was the trap he had walked into himself.
