Chapter 7: The Enemy Sitting at Our Family Table

My uncle’s words echoed through the room.

*“Now you need to know why your mother was afraid of me.””*

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The man standing in front of me was not a stranger.

He was not some hidden enemy from the shadows.

He was the person who had carried my mother’s coffin.

The person who brought food to our house after her funeral.

The person who held my shoulders and told me, “You still have family.””

And now he was standing inside my childhood home, looking at the evidence my mother had hidden from him.

The recorder.

The letter.

The truth.

Elena moved slightly in front of me.

A protective gesture.

My uncle noticed.

He smiled.

“Still protecting her?””

Elena’s expression hardened.

“Leave, Rafael.””

His smile faded.

“You knew.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Elena.

“You knew he was involved?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

My heart sank.

“Everyone knew something.””

My voice cracked.

“Everyone except me.””

“Lucía—”

“No.””

I looked at Elena.

“No more half-truths.””

Rafael walked farther into the room.

He didn’t look angry.

That was what frightened me.

Anger was easy to understand.

This was something else.

Confidence.

Like he knew exactly how this conversation would end.

“Your mother was always too emotional when it came to family,” Rafael said.

My body went cold.

The same words.

The same weapon.

Emotional.

Too sensitive.

Unable to handle the truth.

For years, people had used that word to make me doubt myself.

Not anymore.

“You don’t get to use that word,” I said.

Rafael raised an eyebrow.

“Excuse me?””

“You don’t get to call her emotional when she was the only person smart enough to see what you were doing.””

His expression changed slightly.

A small crack.

Good.

I wanted him uncomfortable.

“You have no idea what your mother knew.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at the recorder.

“She was supposed to destroy that.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of you?””

A pause.

Then he smiled.

“Of what would happen if the truth came out.””

I stared at him.

“What truth?””

Rafael walked toward the table and placed his hand on the chair.

“The truth that your family’s success was never as clean as you believed.””

Elena stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Rafael ignored her.

“Your grandfather built the company using partnerships that were never fully documented.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with my mother?””

“Everything.””

He looked at me.

“Your mother discovered that some of those partnerships were controlled by people outside the family.””

“Who?””

He smiled.

“People who don’t forgive betrayal.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“You’re talking about criminals?””

“I’m talking about power.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No,” Rafael said calmly.

“It’s the only answer that matters.””

My phone suddenly vibrated.

I looked down.

A message.

From my brother.

*Leave the house. Now.*

I looked toward Elena.

She had seen it.

“What happened?””

Before I could answer, the lights went out.

The entire house fell into darkness.

My heart jumped.

Rafael didn’t move.

That was the worst part.

He expected it.

“Elena,” I whispered.

“I’m here.””

The sound of rain outside grew louder.

Then came another sound.

A door opening downstairs.

Someone else had entered.

Rafael sighed.

“He came earlier than I expected.””

I froze.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Then a familiar voice came from the hallway.

“Lucía.””

Mauricio.

My blood turned cold.

Elena immediately grabbed my arm.

“Stay behind me.””

Mauricio appeared in the doorway.

But this was not the man from the courthouse.

Not the arrogant husband who laughed while I was on the ground.

This Mauricio looked exhausted.

Desperate.

His eyes moved between Rafael and me.

“You found it.””

I stared at him.

“You knew about this house.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about the recording.””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“How many lies are there?””

He looked away.

“Too many.””

Rafael laughed.

“Finally admitting something?””

Mauricio glared at him.

“Don’t start.””

That surprised me.

The two men were not united.

They were angry with each other.

I noticed.

And suddenly, I understood.

They had not been partners.

Not completely.

They were people using each other.

“You’re both afraid,” I said.

They looked at me.

“You’re afraid because my mother left something you couldn’t find.””

Neither answered.

That was my confirmation.

I held up the recorder.

“This is what you wanted.””

Mauricio’s face changed.

“Lucía, give me that.””

“No.””

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

His voice softened.

“Please.””

That word almost made me laugh.

Please.

The same man who tried to take everything from me was asking politely.

“You don’t get to ask me for anything.””

His face fell.

For a second, I saw the man I married.

The man I loved.

Then I remembered him watching me on the courthouse steps.

I remembered his laugh.

And the illusion disappeared.

Mauricio looked at Rafael.

“You said she wouldn’t find it.””

Rafael’s expression darkened.

“You said you handled the trust.””

“You said Daniel Ferrer was gone.””

“He was supposed to be.””

My heart stopped.

“You knew Daniel survived?””

Silence.

Then Mauricio closed his eyes.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

His voice was quiet.

“I thought he was dead.””

I stared at him.

“You thought?””

He looked at me.

“Lucía, you don’t understand what happened.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I understand perfectly.””

I pointed at the three men in the room.

“My mother trusted all of you.””

Nobody spoke.

“My father trusted all of you.””

Silence.

“And you all destroyed my family.””

Rafael looked almost offended.

“Careful.””

“Why?””

“Because you still don’t know everything.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Then tell me.””

He hesitated.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

“The person who started this was not me.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

Rafael looked at Mauricio.

Then at Elena.

Then back at me.

“There is someone else.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Another person?””

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

“Who?””

Rafael’s eyes moved toward the recorder.

“Your mother recorded everything.””

My fingers tightened around it.

“She knew.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she expose you?””

“Because she discovered something worse.””

“What?””

Rafael’s voice lowered.

“She discovered that the person controlling Mauricio wasn’t outside the family.””

I felt sick.

“Then who?””

Nobody answered.

Not Mauricio.

Not Rafael.

Not Elena.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

The same number that had sent the message before.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

A voice I had never heard.

But the words made every person in the room freeze.

“Lucía, if you’re hearing this, then they finally brought you to the truth.””

I looked around.

“Who is this?””

The woman continued.

“My name is Camila Salgado.””

My blood froze.

Salgado.

A name connected to my family.

A name I had never heard before.

The woman whispered:

“I am Mauricio’s first wife.””

The room went silent.

Mauricio’s face turned completely pale.

I looked at him.

“First wife?””

He didn’t speak.

The woman continued.

“And I know why your mother tried to expose him.””

My hand trembled.

“Why?””

A pause.

Then the woman said:

“Because Mauricio didn’t marry you for your family’s fortune.””

I held my breath.

“He married you because your mother’s trust was the only thing standing between him and a secret worth billions.””

The call continued.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Lucía, your husband has another child.””

My heart stopped.

“And that child is the legal heir to the company he has been trying to steal from you.””

I looked at Mauricio.

He looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

Because it was true.

And then Camila whispered:

“Your baby is not the only child he has been hiding.””
