Chapter 5: The Evidence Hidden Beneath Our Home

I read the message from Elena three times before my mind accepted it.

*The security footage confirms Mauricio directed Paola.*

Not suggested.

Not encouraged.

Directed.

My hands went cold.

For months, I had wondered how Paola knew exactly when to hurt me.

How she knew where I would be standing.

How she knew I would be alone long enough for a confrontation.

I had thought it was jealousy.

A woman angry at another woman.

But it wasn’t.

It was a plan.

And Mauricio had been the one who designed it.

I sat in the back of Elena’s car, staring through the window as the city passed by.

People walked on sidewalks.

Cars moved through traffic.

A woman laughed outside a café.

The world looked normal.

But mine had changed.

“How long?”” I asked quietly.

Elena turned toward me.

“What?””

“How long did he know he wanted to destroy me?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That was the answer.

I looked at her.

“Elena.””

She sighed.

“Your mother started investigating Mauricio almost two years before her death.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“Two years?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she believed telling you would put you in danger.””

I looked away.

Danger.

That word kept appearing.

As if my entire marriage had been a room slowly filling with smoke while everyone waited for me to notice.

“She trusted him,” I whispered.

Elena’s voice softened.

“She wanted to.””

That hurt.

Because I understood.

My mother wasn’t foolish.

She was hopeful.

There was a difference.

She had seen the good parts of Mauricio.

The parts I loved.

The man who held my hand during difficult moments.

The man who stayed awake when I was sick.

The man who promised he would protect our family.

But people could be many things at once.

A person could love you and still hurt you.

A person could smile at dinner while secretly planning your downfall.

I learned that too late.

“Where are we going?”” I asked.

Elena looked ahead.

“To Valle de Bravo.””

My heart tightened.

Our house.

The place Mauricio was trying to keep in the divorce.

The place where we celebrated birthdays.

Where we brought our newborn nephew home after visiting the hospital.

Where I believed I had built a family.

“You think there’s something there?””

“I know there is.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

“Because your mother told me.””

The car became silent.

“What?””

Elena looked at me.

“Before she died, your mother gave me instructions.””

“Instructions for what?””

“To protect something hidden inside that house.””

I felt a chill.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was waiting.””

“For what?””

“For Mauricio to reveal his intentions.””

I stared at her.

“And now?””

“Now he has.””

The house looked exactly the same.

That was the cruelest part.

The white walls.

The stone pathway.

The garden my mother helped me design.

Everything looked peaceful.

Like nothing had happened.

Like my husband hadn’t spent weeks preparing to erase me from my own life.

I stepped out of the car slowly.

My hand rested over my stomach.

The baby moved.

A small reminder that I had something worth fighting for.

Elena walked beside me.

“Are you sure you want to do this today?””

I looked at the front door.

“Yes.””

Because I had spent too long waiting for answers.

The door opened with the spare key.

Inside, the house smelled like memories.

The wooden floors.

The old books.

The perfume my mother used to wear.

For a moment, I almost expected to hear her voice.

“Lucía?””

I turned.

But it was only Elena.

“You okay?””

I nodded.

“No.””

She gave a small, sad smile.

“Good answer.””

I walked toward the living room.

Nothing seemed different.

Until I noticed something.

The painting above the fireplace.

It was slightly tilted.

I frowned.

“That wasn’t like that.””

Elena looked at it.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

I had cleaned this room hundreds of times.

My mother’s painting had always been perfectly centered.

I stepped closer.

Behind the frame was a small metal box attached to the wall.

My breath caught.

“Elena.””

She moved beside me.

Together, we removed the painting.

The box had a lock.

Not a normal lock.

A fingerprint scanner.

I stared at it.

“How do we open this?””

Elena looked at me.

“Your mother designed it.””

I frowned.

“I don’t know the code.””

“No.””

She looked at my hand.

“You don’t need one.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Your mother expected you to find it.””

I placed my finger on the scanner.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then a small green light appeared.

The box unlocked.

My heart started racing.

Inside was a black folder.

And a small voice recorder.

My mother’s voice was written on the label.

*For Lucía.*

I couldn’t breathe.

Elena looked away, giving me privacy.

I pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then—

“Lucía.””

My knees almost gave out.

Her voice.

After six years.

My mother.

“If you are hearing this, then something happened that I hoped would never happen.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

The recording continued.

“I know you love Mauricio.””

I closed my eyes.

“I know you will want to defend him. You will search for explanations. You will tell yourself there must be another reason.””

My lips trembled.

Because she knew me.

She knew me perfectly.

“But there comes a moment when love becomes the reason someone can hurt you.””

I looked at Elena.

She was watching the recorder.

My mother continued.

“Mauricio is not the man he pretends to be.””

The room felt colder.

“I discovered he created false contracts using company resources. But that was only the beginning.””

I held my breath.

“He was working with someone inside the family.””

Elena looked at me.

Someone inside the family?

My mother’s voice continued.

“Someone I trusted.””

The recording paused.

Then:

“Someone Lucía would never suspect.””

The sound cut for a moment.

Then my mother spoke again.

“If Mauricio comes after the trust, it means he has already partnered with that person.””

I looked at Elena.

“Who?””

But the recording didn’t answer yet.

Instead, my mother said:

“There is one more thing you need to know.””

A paper crackled.

“Your father’s death was not an accident either.””

I froze.

My father.

A memory I had buried.

My father had died when I was nineteen.

Everyone said it was a business accident.

A construction failure.

A tragedy.

I remembered the funeral.

I remembered Mauricio standing beside me, holding my shoulders.

Telling me:

“I’ll take care of you.””

My mother’s voice became quieter.

“The same people responsible for losing your father are connected to Mauricio.””

I covered my mouth.

“No.””

Elena looked shocked.

She whispered:

“Lucía…”

I couldn’t hear anything except the recording.

“Do not trust anyone who tells you your family’s tragedies were unavoidable.””

A pause.

Then my mother said:

“The person who betrayed us is someone who has been at every family gathering. Someone who has eaten at our table. Someone who knows every secret.””

The recorder clicked.

For a moment, I thought it had ended.

Then one final sentence played.

And it destroyed everything I thought I knew.

“Lucía, the person you need to fear most is not Mauricio.””

My breathing stopped.

“It is the person who taught him how to become like this.””

The recording ended.

Silence filled the room.

I stared at Elena.

Neither of us spoke.

Then my phone rang.

The screen showed a name.

A name that made my blood run cold.

Because it belonged to the one person I never imagined would call.

My older brother.

The same brother who had comforted me after my mother died.

The same brother who told me Mauricio was the only man who could protect me.

The same brother who had disappeared from the company records three weeks before Mauricio filed for divorce.

The call continued ringing.

Elena looked at the screen.

“Lucía…”

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was silence.

Then my brother’s voice came through.

And the first words he said were:

“You finally found the recording.””

My heart stopped.

“How did you know about it?””

Another silence.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“Because I was the one who hid it.””
