Chapter 8: The Child He Never Wanted Me to Know About

The room became completely silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that comes before something breaks.

I stared at Mauricio.

My mind refused to process the words.

*Your husband has another child.*

The sentence repeated over and over.

Another child.

Another life.

Another secret.

For ten years, I thought I knew every part of him.

His habits.

His fears.

His dreams.

The way he drank his coffee in the morning.

The song he hummed when he was happy.

The way he held my hand when we walked through crowded places.

But now I wondered if all of those memories belonged to a person who never existed.

“Lucía…”

Mauricio’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

“Don’t.””

His face changed.

“I can explain.””

I almost smiled.

That was always his answer.

Explain.

Not deny.

Not apologize.

Explain.

As if every betrayal was just a misunderstanding waiting for the right words.

“How long?”” I asked.

He said nothing.

“How long have you known about this child?””

His silence was unbearable.

Rafael looked away.

Elena closed her eyes.

And I knew.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

“Answer me.””

Mauricio finally spoke.

“Six years.””

The number hit me harder than I expected.

Six years.

The same amount of time since my mother died.

The same amount of time I had spent grieving.

The same amount of time he had stood beside me pretending to be my protector.

“You knew before my mother died.””

His eyes lowered.

“Yes.””

I felt something inside me crack.

“You stood beside me at her funeral.””

“Yes.””

“You held me while I cried.””

“Yes.””

“You told me we would get through it together.””

His voice became softer.

“Lucía…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You don’t get to say my name like you still have the right.””

The room stayed silent.

Then the phone in my hand buzzed again.

Camila.

I had almost forgotten she was still there.

I lifted the phone.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

The woman on the other end was quiet.

“Because I tried to warn your mother.””

My heart tightened.

“You knew her?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“She came to me.””

I looked at Mauricio.

“She knew about you?””

Camila gave a bitter laugh.

“She knew more than you think.””

I felt dizzy.

“My mother knew your first wife?””

“She found me after discovering Mauricio’s hidden accounts.””

The pieces started moving.

Slowly.

Painfully.

“Mauricio was married before me.””

“Yes.””

“And he hid that from me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Camila’s voice became cold.

“Because the divorce agreement from our marriage contained something he desperately wanted.””

“What?””

“Control.””

Again.

That word.

Everything came back to control.

The company.

The trust.

The assets.

Me.

“What does your child have to do with this?””

Camila hesitated.

“My son was born from my marriage to Mauricio.””

I looked at Mauricio.

“He has a son.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“The original ownership agreement for Salgado Construction includes a succession clause.””

Elena suddenly spoke.

“What clause?””

Camila answered immediately.

“The first legitimate child of Mauricio Salgado becomes the successor of certain family holdings.””

My stomach dropped.

“But I’m his wife.””

“Yes.””

“And I’m carrying his child.””

“Yes.””

“Then why does this matter?””

“Because Mauricio registered his first child before he ever met you.””

The room felt colder.

I understood.

Not everything.

But enough.

He didn’t just hide an affair.

He hid a legal weapon.

A way to challenge my child’s future.

A way to control the company after taking me out of the picture.

Elena walked toward the table.

“Lucía, this changes everything.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

She picked up the folder.

“If Mauricio’s first marriage was legally valid at the time he entered your marriage…”

She stopped.

My heart sank.

“Say it.””

She looked at Mauricio.

Then at me.

“Your marriage may not be legally valid.””

The words hurt.

More than I expected.

Not because I wanted to stay married to him.

But because suddenly ten years felt like a lie.

A carefully designed illusion.

I looked at Mauricio.

“Was I ever your wife?””

His face changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

For the first time.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t know what that word means.””

“I loved you.””

The room froze.

I stared at him.

Then I laughed softly.

“You loved me?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you destroy me?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no explanation.

No excuse.

No version of the story where love and betrayal could exist peacefully.

Rafael suddenly spoke.

“Lucía, you’re focusing on the wrong thing.””

I turned toward him.

“The wrong thing?””

“Yes.””

“What should I focus on?””

He looked at the recorder.

“Your mother knew about Camila.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because she was the one who found her.””

The phone became silent.

Camila whispered:

“She saved me.””

I looked at the phone.

“Saved you?””

“Yes.””

Camila’s voice cracked slightly.

“Mauricio was trying to erase me.””

My blood ran cold.

“He threatened you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew about the company.””

Elena looked at me.

“Lucía, play the rest of your mother’s recording.””

I looked down at the recorder.

The part we had heard ended before the full message.

There was more.

I pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then my mother’s voice returned.

“If you are hearing this, then you have already discovered Camila.””

I stopped breathing.

My mother knew.

“I am sorry you had to learn this way.””

A pause.

“Mauricio will try to make you believe this is about jealousy. About an old relationship. About mistakes from his past.””

My eyes burned.

“But this is not about another woman.””

The recording continued.

“This is about a pattern.””

Elena leaned closer.

My mother’s voice became stronger.

“Mauricio does not love people. He collects advantages.””

Nobody moved.

“He chooses relationships based on what they can provide.””

My hand moved to my stomach.

“He chose Camila because of her family’s connections.””

A pause.

“He chose me because of my company.””

My chest tightened.

Then:

“And he chose Lucía because she was the only person who could inherit everything he wanted.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the air had disappeared.

My mother knew.

She knew.

The woman who loved me most in the world knew the truth before I did.

The recording continued.

“But Lucía has something Mauricio does not understand.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“She has a conscience.””

A small sound escaped me.

My mother’s voice softened.

“She believes love is stronger than greed.””

A pause.

“But that is also her weakness.””

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

“Lucía, if you are hearing this, I need you to understand one thing.””

The recorder clicked slightly.

“The baby you are carrying is not just your child.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Elena looked confused.

My mother continued:

“Your child is the reason Mauricio will become more dangerous than ever.””

My heart started racing.

“Because if he cannot control you, he will try to control the child.””

I covered my mouth.

No.

No.

The recording continued.

“He already made plans.””

The room froze.

“What plans?”” I whispered.

My mother answered as if she were sitting beside me.

“Plans to prove you are unstable.””

I felt sick.

“To remove you from custody.””

Silence.

“To make himself the only legal guardian of the child.””

Mauricio looked down.

Because he knew.

He knew.

The final words of the recording were barely audible.

“Lucía, if Mauricio ever hurts you, remember this…”

The sound became distorted.

Then:

“The person helping him is not Rafael.””

Everyone froze.

I looked at my uncle.

Not Rafael.

Not Mauricio.

Then who?

My mother’s final sentence played.

“The person closest to him is someone you have trusted more than anyone.””

The recorder clicked.

The message ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Camila’s voice came through the phone.

“Lucía.””

I looked down.

“Yes?””

“I know who your mother was talking about.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Camila took a breath.

Then she said:

“The person who helped Mauricio destroy your family…”

A pause.

“…is the person who has been managing your legal documents since the day you got married.””

Elena slowly turned pale.

I looked at her.

Because suddenly, there was only one person left.

The person who knew every contract.

Every signature.

Every secret.

My attorney.

The woman standing beside me.

And Elena whispered:

“No.””

But Camila’s voice was certain.

May you like

“Yes.””

Then the phone went dead.
