Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The entire FBI headquarters watched the screen.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the impossible was standing in front of them.

Daniel Cross was alive.

The man whose disappearance had haunted me for fifteen years was sitting in an unknown location, broadcasting himself into the heart of the FBI.

“Terrence,” Daniel said through the speakers, “I know you’re watching.””

I stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

His expression changed.

For a moment, the criminal disappeared.

And I saw the man who had once trusted me.

Then the anger returned.

“You left me.””

The words hit harder than any accusation from Marcus.

Because they came from someone I had tried to save.

“I searched for you.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You searched for the version of the story that made you comfortable.””

The screen split.

Documents appeared.

My reports.

My signatures.

My undercover recordings.

Then footage from Harbor Shield.

Footage I had never seen.

My face appeared.

My voice.

My decisions.

The room watched me compromise rules.

Bend procedures.

Protect Daniel.

Elena looked at me.

“Terrence…”

I held up a hand.

“I know.””

Daniel continued.

“You called yourself a protector.””

His voice became bitter.

“But you made choices too.””

The screen changed.

A video appeared of Dempsey receiving money.

Carter meeting criminals.

Reed exchanging information.

Marcus building his operation.

Daniel wasn’t just exposing me.

He was exposing everyone.

He was burning the entire system down.

“Why?”” I asked.

Daniel stared.

“Because nobody cared when I disappeared.””

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

His voice cracked.

“I gave you everything.””

The room became silent.

“I trusted you.””

I remembered the final night.

The raid.

The gunfire.

The explosion.

Daniel disappearing into the darkness.

But there was something I never knew.

He hadn’t escaped.

He had been taken.

And someone inside the operation had allowed it.

“Who took you?”” I asked.

Daniel looked away.

For the first time, fear appeared.

“Marcus.””

A chill went through me.

“He was behind Harbor Shield?””

Daniel nodded.

“He was testing you.””

“Testing me?””

“To see if you would sacrifice the rules for someone you believed deserved saving.””

I stared at the screen.

“And?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“You failed.””

The words hurt because part of me believed them.

I had always believed justice required sacrifice.

But maybe I had confused justice with control.

The broadcast ended.

Immediately, agents began moving.

Elena grabbed my arm.

“We need to find him.””

I nodded.

But before we could leave, my phone received a message.

A location.

No sender.

Just coordinates.

David looked over my shoulder.

“Is that him?””

I stared at the numbers.

“No.””

Because I recognized the location.

It was where Operation Harbor Shield began.

The old abandoned shipping yard.

The same place where Daniel disappeared.

Elena loaded her weapon.

“This could be a trap.””

I looked at the coordinates.

“It is.””

David frowned.

“Then why go?””

I looked at him.

“Because Daniel wants answers.””

“And Marcus?””

I opened the door.

“Marcus wants an ending.””

The three of us drove into the night.

But when we arrived at the shipping yard, we found something waiting.

Not Daniel.

Not Marcus.

A body.

May you like

And beside it was a badge.

Thomas Reed’s badge.
