Chapter 5: The Betrayal Behind the Badge
The hardest part of being an investigator is accepting one truth.
The enemy isn’t always outside.
Sometimes they wear the same badge.
The FBI conference room was silent when I walked in.
Everyone avoided eye contact.
That told me enough.
Elena placed a file in front of me.
“We identified the person communicating with Marcus Vale.””
I opened it.
The photograph made my chest tighten.
Not because I knew him well.
Because I trusted him.
Assistant Director Thomas Reed.
A man who had personally approved several of my operations.
A man who had shaken my hand after successful missions.
A man who had told me, “The Bureau needs people like you.””
Now his name was connected to the conspiracy.
David stared at the file.
“This doesn’t make sense.””
“No,” Elena said.
“It doesn’t.””
I looked through the documents.
Financial transfers.
Encrypted messages.
Meeting locations.
Then I found something worse.
A photograph.
Taken two days before my arrest.
It showed Reed meeting Richard Dempsey.
The date was clear.
The location was clear.
The plan was clear.
They weren’t reacting to my investigation.
They were preparing for it.
“They knew we were coming,” I said.
Elena nodded.
“They knew.””
David looked at me.
“So the traffic stop wasn’t random.””
“No.””
I closed the file.
“It was an execution of a plan.””
The room stayed quiet.
Then Elena received another alert.
She read it.
Her face changed.
“Terrence…”
“What?””
She slowly turned the monitor around.
A live video feed appeared.
Marcus Vale was sitting in a dark room.
He looked directly into the camera.
And he smiled.
“Hello, Agent Miller.””
My blood ran cold.
Because he wasn’t recording.
He was watching.
A speaker beside the screen crackled.
Marcus’s voice filled the room.
“You spent years putting people like me behind bars.””
He leaned closer.
“But you made one mistake.””
I stepped toward the screen.
“What mistake?””
His smile widened.
“You believed the badge protected you.””
The feed flickered.
Then went black.
A second later, every phone in the room received the same message.
One sentence.
One threat.
“Tonight, the world learns what the FBI is really hiding.””
Elena looked at me.
“Terrence…”
I stared at the dark screen.
Because I finally understood.
Marcus Vale wasn’t trying to escape justice.
May you like
He was trying to destroy it.
And the first thing he wanted to destroy was me.
