Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew My Name

The federal building was usually calm.

That morning, it felt different.

Every hallway had movement.

Every phone seemed louder.

Everyone knew something bigger was happening.

Someone had leaked our operation.

Someone had tracked our vehicle.

Someone had specifically targeted David and me.

Elena placed the evidence board on the screen.

“We have confirmed communication between Dempsey, Carter, and three members of Operation Iron Rain.””

David crossed his arms.

“But why us?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question.

Then Elena received a message.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She read it again.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She turned the screen toward us.

An anonymous email.

One sentence.

“Ask Terrence Miller about Baltimore.””

The room became silent.

David looked at me.

“Baltimore?””

I hadn’t heard that name connected to my work in years.

But my stomach tightened.

Because I knew exactly what it meant.

Fifteen years earlier, before I joined the Violent Crimes Task Force, I worked an undercover case involving weapons trafficking.

The operation ended successfully.

Or so I thought.

Someone had been arrested.

Someone had disappeared.

Someone who swore revenge.

Elena noticed my expression.

“You know who sent this.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

I stared at the message.

“Marcus Vale.””

David frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

Everyone knew Marcus Vale.

A former military contractor turned criminal strategist.

The kind of person who never pulled the trigger himself.

He convinced others to do it.

“He’s been missing for years,” David said.

I looked at him.

“People like Marcus don’t disappear.””

I tapped the screen.

“They wait.””

That night, I returned home for the first time since the arrest.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

I stood in the kitchen and looked at the old photographs on the wall.

A younger version of myself.

David.

Our parents.

The life before badges and investigations.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a voice whispered.

“You should have left Baltimore buried.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Who is this?””

A soft laugh.

“You know exactly who.””

The call ended.

I immediately checked the number.

Blocked.

But the message was clear.

This wasn’t about Dempsey.

It wasn’t about Oak Creek.

It was personal.

The next morning, Elena called me urgently.

“Terrence, you need to come in.””

“What happened?””

“We found Marcus Vale.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“He’s been working with someone inside the FBI.””
