Chapter 6: The Enemy Inside the Walls

The FBI building had never felt smaller.

Every hallway I walked through carried a different weight now. The same walls that had once represented trust and justice suddenly felt like they were hiding secrets.

People lowered their voices when I passed.

Some avoided looking at me.

Others looked at me like they were waiting to see whether I would break.

I wouldn’t.

I had spent my entire career chasing criminals who believed fear was a weapon.

I knew better.

Fear was only powerful when you surrendered control.

And I wasn’t ready to surrender anything.

Elena Torres stood beside the conference room window, watching agents move through the building below.

“Internal Affairs is freezing Reed’s access,” she said.

I looked at her.

“Freezing?””

She nodded.

“They need more evidence before they arrest an Assistant Director.””

I laughed quietly.

“So we can arrest a street criminal with a gun in his waistband in ten minutes, but someone inside the Bureau gets a waiting period?””

Elena didn’t argue.

Because she knew I was right.

The higher someone climbed, the more protection surrounded them.

David entered the room carrying two cups of coffee.

“You haven’t slept.””

Neither had he.

I accepted the cup.

“Neither have you.””

He shrugged.

“I’m younger. I can survive.””

I smiled slightly.

“By twelve minutes.””

David had always been like that.

Even after years of dangerous assignments, he still found a way to make a joke.

But today, his expression was different.

“Terrence.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“You think Reed was involved from the beginning?””

I stared at the evidence board.

Marcus Vale.

Richard Dempsey.

William Carter.

Thomas Reed.

Four names.

Four pieces.

One machine.

“I don’t think Reed joined Marcus,” I said.

David frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“I think Marcus built this around him.””

Elena turned.

“Explain.””

I walked toward the board.

“Marcus knows people. He studies weaknesses. He doesn’t recruit loyal soldiers. He finds ambitious people.””

I tapped Reed’s picture.

“Reed wanted influence.””

Then Dempsey.

“Dempsey wanted power.””

Then Carter.

“Carter wanted control.””

My finger landed on Marcus Vale.

“And Marcus gave them exactly what they wanted.””

The room went quiet.

Because everyone understood.

Marcus wasn’t building an empire.

He was building a dependency.

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

No greeting.

No introduction.

Just breathing.

Then a voice.

“You’re always good at finding patterns, Terrence.””

My grip tightened.

“Marcus.””

A soft laugh.

“I was wondering how long it would take.””

“Where are you?””

“Still asking the wrong questions.””

I looked around the room.

Elena immediately began tracing the call.

Marcus continued.

“You always believed justice was about facts.””

“And it is.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“Justice is about who controls the story.””

The line crackled.

“You understand that better than anyone.””

I froze.

Because I knew what he meant.

Baltimore.

The case I had buried.

“You’re trying to punish me for something that happened fifteen years ago.””

“Punish you?””

He laughed.

“No, Terrence.””

The call became silent.

“I’m trying to show everyone who you really are.””

The line disconnected.

Elena looked at her screen.

“Thirty seconds.””

“Location?””

She shook her head.

“Encrypted.””

David stared at me.

“What does he have?””

I didn’t answer.

Because deep down, I knew.

Marcus wasn’t bluffing.

He had something.

Something from Baltimore.

Something that could destroy everything I had built.

That afternoon, a sealed FBI archive was opened under emergency authority.

The label on the file made my stomach tighten.

*Operation Harbor Shield.*

My old case.

My old secret.

And inside the first envelope was a photograph I had never seen before.

A photograph of me.

Standing beside the man who was supposed to be the target.

May you like

And on the back were five words written in black ink.

*You were protecting him.*
