Chapter 9: The Mother Who Finally Told the Truth

Patricia Collins was living in a small apartment outside Atlanta.

She had moved out of her previous home shortly after Brittany's arrest.

When Darius arrived with Jennifer, Patricia opened the door.

Her face changed immediately.

“Darius.””

He held up the photograph.

“We need to talk.””

Patricia stepped aside.

Inside, the apartment was quiet.

No expensive decorations.

No designer furniture.

Just a small sofa, a kitchen table, and several cardboard boxes.

Darius placed the photograph on the table.

“Why were you with my wife?””

Patricia looked down.

Then she began crying.

“Renee was my friend.””

Darius stared.

“You knew her?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Almost five years.””

He felt his chest tighten.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Patricia sat down.

“Because I was ashamed.””

Jennifer opened her notebook.

“Mrs. Collins, we need you to tell us everything.””

Patricia nodded.

Then she began.

“My husband, Robert, had been involved in financial fraud for years. When Renee discovered what he had done, she came to me.””

Darius listened.

Patricia continued.

“I wanted to help her. I gave her copies of several documents. I introduced her to Logan because he knew how Robert moved the money.””

“Then why did you let Brittany get close to me?””

Patricia covered her face.

“Because Robert threatened her.””

Darius frowned.

“Threatened her with what?””

“Years earlier, Brittany had been involved in one of his operations. He had documents proving she helped move money through several accounts. He told her that if she didn't cooperate, he would send her to prison.””

Darius looked at Jennifer.

Patricia continued.

“Brittany believed she had no choice.””

Darius shook his head.

“She shaved my daughter's head.””

Patricia began crying harder.

“I know.””

“She terrified her.””

“I know.””

“She made her believe she wasn't wanted.””

Patricia lowered her head.

“I know.””

Darius stood.

“Then why didn't you stop her?””

Patricia looked up.

“Because I was afraid.””

He stared at her.

“Everyone was afraid. Renee was afraid. Nathan was afraid.

You were afraid. And my daughter was the one who suffered.””

Patricia nodded.

“You're right.””

Then she reached into a drawer.

She removed a small recording device.

“Renee gave me this.””

Jennifer took it.

“What is it?””

“A recording of Robert and Richard discussing what would happen if Renee refused to surrender the trust.””

Darius leaned forward.

“Have you listened to it?””

Patricia nodded.

“Once.””

“What does it say?””

Patricia closed her eyes.

“Robert ordered Richard to make sure Renee couldn't testify.””

Darius felt his blood run cold.

“Did he order her death?””

Patricia whispered:

“Yes.””

Jennifer immediately contacted Detective Bennett.

The recording was transferred to the authorities.

Within hours, investigators confirmed that the voices belonged to Robert Bennett and Richard Mitchell.

The conversation was chilling.

Robert had demanded that Renee's evidence be destroyed.

Richard had promised to handle it.

Then Robert said:

“Make sure the doctor understands. I don't want a scandal. I want it to look like nature took its course.””

Darius listened to the recording twice.

Then he turned away.

He couldn't bear hearing the voices anymore.

But there was one final piece.

The detective called.

“We've identified the doctor.””

“Whitmore?””

“No. Dr. Whitmore falsified the records afterward. The person who supplied the unauthorized medication was someone else.””

Darius gripped his phone.

“Who?””

“Patricia Collins.””

He looked toward Patricia.

She began crying.

“I didn't know what it was,” she whispered.

Darius stared.

Detective Bennett continued.

“She says Robert gave her a bottle and told her it was a harmless supplement. She delivered it to Brittany, who took it to the hospital.””

Darius closed his eyes.

“So Brittany gave it to Renee.””

“Yes.””

Patricia covered her mouth.

“I swear I didn't know.””

Darius looked at her.

“Did Renee know?””

Patricia shook her head.

“No. She thought I was helping her.””

Darius felt something break inside him.

The woman who had once been Renee's friend had unknowingly helped deliver the substance that contributed to her death.

But Brittany had known more than she admitted.

And Robert had arranged everything.

Two weeks later, the case reached its final stage.

Robert Bennett was charged with conspiracy, financial fraud, and involvement in Renee's death.

Richard Mitchell faced multiple charges.

Dr. Whitmore lost his medical license pending the criminal proceedings.

Patricia agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.

Nathan pleaded guilty to financial misconduct and accepted responsibility for his role in the scheme.

Brittany remained in custody.

Her attorney requested a meeting with Darius.

He refused.

Then Brittany sent a letter.

It arrived at the beach house on a rainy afternoon.

Darius almost threw it away.

But Kayla saw her name on the envelope.

“Daddy, is that for me?””

He hesitated.

Then he opened it.

The letter contained only a few lines.

Darius,

I know you hate me.

I know I destroyed everything.

But please tell Kayla that I never wanted to hurt her.

I made one terrible mistake with her hair. Everything else happened because I was trapped.

I hope one day you can forgive me.

Darius read it twice.

Then he folded it.

Kayla watched him.

“Who wrote that?””

“Brittany.””

Kayla looked down.

“Does she want to come back?””

“No.””

“Good.””

Darius crouched.

“Do you want me to read it to you?””

Kayla shook her head.

“No, Daddy.””

“Why?””

She touched one of her growing curls.

“Because I don't want to hear her voice anymore.””

Darius nodded.

“Then you don't have to.””

He placed the letter in a drawer.

That evening, he received a call from Jennifer.

“We've received the final forensic report on the trust.””

“And?””

“Kayla's inheritance is secure. The fraudulent transfers can be recovered.””

Darius exhaled.

“How much?””

“Nearly thirty-eight million dollars, plus the recovered investment returns.””

He closed his eyes.

For the first time, the number meant very little.

“Put everything into an independent trust for Kayla. No one gets access without court supervision.””

“Understood.””

“And Jennifer?””

“Yes?””

“Make sure Evelyn is protected. Brittany used her name in those documents. I want that corrected.””

“Of course.””

He ended the call.

Then he walked into Kayla's bedroom.

She was sleeping peacefully.

Her curls were growing longer.

A purple ribbon rested on her bedside table.

Darius kissed her forehead.

“Nothing is going to happen to you again,” he whispered.

But he didn't know that the final surprise was still waiting.

The following morning, Detective Bennett called.

“We recovered Renee's original hospital diary.””

Darius sat up.

“Her diary?””

“Yes. It was stored with the hospital's archived property records.””

“What does it say?””

“There is an entry dated the night before her final hospitalization.””

Darius waited.

The detective read:

If I cannot protect Kayla myself, I need Darius to know that the truth is not what it appears to be. The person who delivered the medication was not the person who ordered it. And the person who ordered it was not the person who first planned the crime.

Darius frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“We're still examining the context.””

Then the detective added:

“There is another name in the diary.””

“Whose?””

“Someone Renee believed was secretly helping Robert.””

Darius felt his stomach tighten.

“Tell me.””

Detective Bennett paused.

Then she said:

“Your mother.””

Darius dropped the phone.

May you like

His mother had died when he was twenty.

And according to Renee's final diary entry, she might have been involved in the original conspiracy.
