Chapter 2: The Lie She Told the Guests
By five o'clock, the Mitchell home was filled with people.
Cars lined the driveway.
Waiters carried silver trays through the garden.
Soft jazz played near the swimming pool.
But there was no engagement announcement.
No champagne toast.
And no bride-to-be greeting the guests.
Darius stood inside the guest bedroom, watching Evelyn gently wipe Kayla's cheeks with a warm cloth.
His daughter was sitting on the bed wearing a soft pink robe.
Her lavender dress lay folded beside her.
“Does your head hurt, sweetheart?”” Darius asked.
“A little.””
“Can I look?””
Kayla nodded.
He carefully examined her scalp.
There were several irritated areas where the clippers had passed too close.
He felt his jaw tighten.
Evelyn noticed.
“Mr. Mitchell, I think we should have the doctor examine her.””
“I already called. Dr. Harris is on her way.””
Kayla touched the short hair above her ear.
“Daddy?””
“Yes, baby?””
“Will my curls grow back?””
Darius sat beside her.
“Yes. They'll grow back.””
“But will they look like Mommy's?””
He looked down.
“I don't know, princess.””
Kayla's eyes filled again.
“Mommy said they were special.””
Darius took her small hand.
“They are still special. Even when they're short.””
“But I wanted to wear my pretty hair for the party.””
He couldn't answer immediately.
Then he pulled her into his arms.
“I know.””
Kayla whispered something against his shirt.
“I wanted Brittany to like me.””
Darius closed his eyes.
That sentence hurt more than the sight of her shaved head.
“Oh, sweetheart.””
“Maybe if I was good, she wouldn't be angry.””
“No.””
He gently moved her face so she could see him.
“You never have to change yourself to make someone treat you kindly. Never.””
Evelyn quietly left the room to give them privacy.
Darius stayed beside his daughter until she fell asleep.
Then his phone vibrated.
It was a message from his assistant.
The guests are asking whether the engagement announcement is still happening.
Darius typed back.
Cancel it.
Another message arrived.
Should we tell them the reason?
Darius glanced at Kayla.
Tell them there has been a family emergency.
He put his phone away.
Then he heard raised voices in the hallway.
Brittany had changed into a sparkling evening gown.
She stood near the staircase, smiling at the arriving guests as if nothing had happened.
Her mother, Patricia Collins, had just arrived.
Patricia was a polished woman in her late fifties who cared deeply about appearances.
She had already noticed the absence of the engagement decorations.
“Where is Darius?”” she asked.
Brittany forced a smile.
“He's dealing with something.””
“What kind of something?””
“Kayla.””
Patricia's expression changed.
“What did that child do now?””
Brittany lowered her voice.
“She's having another episode.””
Patricia sighed.
“Honestly, Brittany, that girl needs discipline.””
Brittany glanced around.
Then she leaned closer.
“She refused to let me brush her hair. I tried to help her, but she started screaming. She moved while I was trimming it.””
Patricia looked toward the stairs.
“What happened?””
“It's not pretty.””
“Where is she?””
“Upstairs.””
Patricia shook her head.
“Your fiancé needs to understand that a child cannot control an entire household.””
Brittany almost smiled.
That was exactly what she wanted people to believe.
Then Evelyn appeared at the top of the staircase.
“Mrs. Collins,” she said firmly.
Patricia looked up.
“What?””
“Please don't discuss Kayla as though she isn't a human being.””
Patricia's mouth fell open.
“Excuse me?””
Evelyn descended two steps.
“I saw what happened upstairs. Brittany shaved that child's hair after she begged her to stop.””
Brittany immediately stepped forward.
“Evelyn, stop lying!””
“I heard every scream.””
“You're twisting things.””
“I saw the clippers in your hand!””
Patricia looked between them.
Then she turned toward her daughter.
“Brittany?””
Brittany's eyes filled with tears.
“Mom, I was trying to help.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No. You were trying to hurt her.””
Patricia raised her voice.
“That's enough! You are staff in this house. You don't get to accuse my daughter.””
Evelyn stood straight.
“I've worked for this family for seven years. I cared for Kayla when she was a baby. I was here when her mother died. I will not stand quietly while someone abuses her.””
A few guests had gathered near the staircase.
Brittany noticed them.
Her expression changed instantly.
She pressed a hand to her chest.
“Please. I don't want to discuss this in front of everyone.””
Then she began crying.
“I only wanted Kayla to feel included. She hates me. She's been making my life difficult since the beginning.””
A woman near the entrance whispered to another guest.
Brittany heard it.
She lowered her head and continued.
“I suppose nobody understands how difficult it is to enter a family when the child has lost her mother.””
Patricia put an arm around her.
“You've done your best, sweetheart.””
Evelyn stared at them in disbelief.
Then a voice came from the upper landing.
“That's enough.””
Darius stood there.
His expression was cold.
Everyone fell silent.
He descended the staircase slowly.
“Brittany, you have one minute to tell everyone the truth.””
She looked at him.
“Darius, please.””
“One minute.””
Patricia stepped forward.
“Darius, I think you're being unfair. Brittany is under a lot of pressure.””
“Then she should have walked away from the child. Instead, she held her down and shaved her head.””
Brittany shook her head.
“I did not hold her down!””
Darius took out his phone.
“Do you want to explain that again?””
She frowned.
“What?””
He turned the screen toward her.
A security notification showed a timestamp from 3:18 p.m.
The upstairs hallway camera had recorded movement outside the dressing room.
Brittany stared at it.
Darius continued.
“I haven't even watched the footage yet. But I will.””
Her face drained of color.
Patricia quickly intervened.
“Darius, surely we can resolve this privately.””
“No.””
“You're embarrassing your future wife.””
Darius looked directly at her.
“She's not my future wife.””
The guests began murmuring.
Brittany grabbed his arm.
“Darius, please. Think about what you're doing.””
He gently removed her hand.
“I have been thinking about my daughter.””
Then he looked at the guests.
“I apologize for inviting you here under circumstances that have changed. The engagement celebration is canceled.””
A man near the garden doors asked, “Is everything okay?””
Darius answered without hesitation.
“My daughter has been hurt. That's all anyone needs to know right now.””
He turned to Evelyn.
“Please stay with Kayla.””
Then he walked away.
Brittany stood frozen in the middle of the staircase.
Her mother leaned close.
“What have you done?””
Brittany whispered:
“Nothing that can't be fixed.””
But Patricia didn't look convinced.
At 6:15 p.m., Dr. Harris arrived.
She examined Kayla's scalp, checked the irritated areas, and prescribed a gentle treatment.
“Physically, she should recover,” the doctor told Darius.
“But she has been frightened. Let her decide when she wants to discuss what happened.””
Darius nodded.
“Thank you.””
After the doctor left, he returned to his office.
He opened the home security system.
The upstairs hallway footage appeared first.
He watched Brittany enter the dressing room with Kayla.
He watched her leave nearly twenty minutes later.
Then he opened the audio recording from the hallway camera.
The microphone had captured more than he expected.
Brittany's voice came through clearly.
“Your father isn't here right now.””
Then Kayla:
“Daddy said nobody can cut my hair unless I say yes.””
Then Brittany:
“I'm going to marry your father. That means I will be making the rules in this house.””
Darius gripped the desk.
The recording continued.
“I'm tired of hearing that man's name every time I tell you something.””
He stopped playback.
His hands were shaking.
Then another sound came from the recording.
A phone vibrating.
Brittany had stepped away from Kayla for a moment.
She answered a call.
And the voice on the other end was unmistakable.
A man.
“Did you do it?””
Brittany whispered, “Yes.””
“Good. Now there's no going back.””
Darius leaned toward the screen.
The man continued.
“Remember what we discussed. Once the wedding happens, the house and the accounts become much easier to access.””
Brittany replied:
“I know. But the little girl is making everything difficult.””
Darius stopped breathing.
The man laughed.
“Then maybe it's time we dealt with that problem too.””
The recording ended.
Darius sat motionless.
For months, he had believed Brittany wanted to build a family.
Now he was beginning to suspect she wanted something else entirely.
He replayed the man's voice.
Then he opened his contacts and called his private investigator.
“Marcus, I need you here tonight.””
“What's happened?””
“I need a complete background investigation on Brittany Collins. Everything. Her finances, her relationships, her history. And I need the man she was speaking to identified.””
Marcus went quiet.
“Is this about the wedding?””
Darius looked at the paused security footage.
“No. It's about my daughter.””
Then another notification appeared on his screen.
A new motion alert.
Front entrance.
Darius opened the live camera.
A black SUV had just pulled into the driveway.
A tall man stepped out.
He looked toward the upstairs windows.
Then he smiled.
Darius recognized him.
It was Brittany's former fiancé.

The man she had claimed moved overseas two years earlier.
And he was carrying a key to the Mitchell house.
