Chapter 1: The Woman Who Heard Her Cry
“I'm here, baby. I'm right here.””
Evelyn Carter held Kayla against her chest, carefully avoiding the uneven patches of hair still clinging to the little girl's scalp.
Kayla buried her face in Evelyn's uniform.
“Miss Evelyn, please make her stop. I didn't do anything bad.””
Evelyn closed her eyes for one second.
Then she looked at Brittany.
The electric clippers were still buzzing in the woman's hand.
“What is wrong with you?”” Evelyn demanded.
Brittany switched off the machine.
“Watch your tone, Evelyn.””
“Look at this child!””
“It's just a haircut.””
Evelyn glanced at the floor.
There were curls everywhere.
Some were still attached to the purple ribbon Renee had tied around Kayla's hair during her last birthday party.
Evelyn recognized that ribbon.
She had helped Renee choose it.
“Those were her mother's favorite curls,” Evelyn whispered.
Brittany rolled her eyes.
“Oh, please. Here we go with the dead mother again.””
Evelyn felt something tighten in her chest.
“Don't you dare speak about Renee like that.””
Brittany stepped closer.
“You're an employee in this house. Remember that.””
Evelyn tightened her arms around Kayla.
“And you're supposed to be marrying her father. Maybe you should remember that.””
For a moment, neither woman spoke.
Then Brittany placed the clippers on the marble counter.
“I was trying to make her presentable for the party. Her hair was impossible to manage.””
“She told you no.””
“She is six years old. She doesn't get to dictate everything.””
“She gets to decide what happens to her own body.””
Brittany laughed bitterly.
“Since when did you become her mother?””
Kayla lifted her tear-streaked face.
“Miss Evelyn is nice to me.””
That simple sentence seemed to irritate Brittany more than anything else.
“Of course she is. She's paid to be nice.””
Evelyn didn't respond.
She picked up Kayla's lavender dress and wrapped it around the child's shoulders.
“Come on, sweetheart. Let's get you somewhere safe.””
But Brittany moved in front of the door.
“She's not going anywhere.””
Evelyn stared at her.
“Move.””
“I said she's staying here.””
“Mr. Mitchell needs to see what you've done.””
Brittany's expression changed.
For the first time, Evelyn noticed something beyond anger.
Fear.
Brittany glanced toward the staircase.
“Darius is busy.””
“Then I'll interrupt him.””
“You will do no such thing.””
Evelyn reached for her phone.
Brittany immediately stepped forward.
“Put that away.””
“No.””
“Evelyn, I am warning you.””
“And I'm warning you. Move away from that child.””
Brittany grabbed Evelyn's wrist.
Kayla screamed.
“DON'T HURT MISS EVELYN!””
The sound echoed through the dressing room.
Evelyn pulled her arm free.
“Don't touch me again.””
Brittany's cheeks turned red.
“You have no idea what you're getting yourself into.””
Evelyn looked at the little girl trembling in her arms.
“I think I do.””
She walked past Brittany.
This time, Brittany didn't stop her.
But as Evelyn reached the hallway, she heard the woman whisper something that made her blood run cold.
“You'll both regret this.””
Downstairs, Darius Mitchell was standing near the kitchen island, checking the final arrangements for the engagement celebration.
His phone was pressed against his ear.
“Make sure the photographer arrives by five,” he told his assistant.
“And tell the catering manager that Kayla's table needs to be near the garden doors.””
He smiled when he saw the lavender dress hanging over the back of a dining chair.
His daughter had talked about that dress for days.
“Daddy?””
He turned.
Evelyn stood at the bottom of the stairs.
Her face was pale.
Kayla was in her arms.
Darius immediately ended his call.
“What's wrong?””
Kayla looked at him.
The moment she saw her father, her face crumpled.
“Daddy!””
Darius rushed forward.
“Hey, princess. What's happening?””
Kayla reached for him.
He took her from Evelyn.
Then he saw her hair.
He stopped breathing.
One side of her head was almost completely shaved. The other side had uneven patches, with a few short curls sticking out awkwardly.
Her little scalp was red.
Her lavender dress was covered in loose brown hair.
Darius stared.
“Kayla?””
She began crying harder.
“Daddy, I told her no.””
His voice dropped.
“Who did this?””
Kayla pointed toward the stairs.
“Brittany.””
For several seconds, Darius didn't move.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
“Tell me exactly what happened.””
Evelyn swallowed.
“I heard her screaming. When I came upstairs, Brittany was holding electric clippers. Your daughter's hair was all over the floor.””
Darius looked down at Kayla.
“Did Brittany hurt you?””
Kayla nodded.
“She held my face and told me I was spoiled. I asked her to stop, Daddy. I asked lots of times.””
Darius closed his eyes.
He remembered Renee sitting on the bathroom counter with Kayla.
He remembered the way his wife used to brush those curls.
He remembered her laughing when Kayla shook her head and made her hair bounce.
And he remembered the promise he had made at Renee's funeral.
He would protect their daughter.
Always.
“Where is Brittany?”” he asked.
Evelyn pointed upstairs.
Darius handed Kayla gently back to her.
“Take her to the guest bedroom. Don't let anyone touch her hair. I'm calling her pediatrician.””
Kayla caught his sleeve.
“Daddy, are you mad at me?””
His expression broke.
“No, sweetheart.””
“Did I do something bad?””
Darius knelt in front of her.
He placed both hands gently on her shoulders.
“Listen to me. You did absolutely nothing wrong. Not one thing. Do you understand?””
Kayla nodded weakly.
“Are you still going to marry Brittany?””
The question struck harder than anything else.
Darius looked at his daughter's frightened face.
Then he answered.
“Not if she thinks hurting you is acceptable.””
Kayla rested her forehead against his.
He kissed her.
“Go with Miss Evelyn. Daddy needs to take care of something.””
Brittany was standing in front of the dressing room mirror when Darius entered.
She had changed into a fresh cream-colored dress.
The clippers were gone.
She was applying lipstick.
“Darius!”” she exclaimed.
“You're supposed to be downstairs. The guests will be arriving soon.””
He didn't answer.
She looked at him through the mirror.
“What?””
Darius stared at her.
“Did you cut Kayla's hair?””
Brittany sighed.
“Oh, sweetheart. I was going to tell you.””
“Did you?””
“Yes. And honestly, I don't understand why you're making that face.””
“You shaved her head.””
“I gave her a little makeover.””
“A makeover?””
“She was being difficult. I had to teach her that she can't always get her way.””
Darius stepped closer.
“She is six years old.””
“And she behaves like she's the queen of this house.””
“She is my daughter.””
“And I'm going to be your wife!””
The words burst out of Brittany.
For a moment, the room was silent.
Then she continued.
“I'm tired of being treated like a visitor in my own home. Everything revolves around Kayla. Every decision.
Every conversation. Every single thing!””
Darius looked at her as though he were seeing a stranger.
“So you punished a six-year-old child because you feel neglected?””
“Don't twist my words.””
“Did she ask you to stop?””
Brittany crossed her arms.
“She was being dramatic.””
“Did she ask you to stop?””
“Yes!””
“Did she cry?””
Brittany looked away.
“Children cry.””
Darius stared at her.
Then he asked the question that changed everything.
“Why did you use electric clippers?””
Brittany hesitated.
“I wanted it to be even.””
“Her entire head?””
“It was already ruined by the time I finished!””
Darius went completely still.
Brittany realized what she had said.
“I mean—”
“You admit you kept going after you saw what you'd done?””
“Darius, don't make this bigger than it is.””
He took one step backward.
“Get away from my daughter.””
Her eyes widened.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“Darius, our wedding is in six weeks.””
“Not anymore.””
Brittany's lipstick fell from her hand.
“You cannot be serious.””
“I have never been more serious about anything.””
She stared at him.
Then her face hardened.
“You're throwing away our future because of a haircut?””
Darius turned toward the door.
“No. I'm ending our future because of what you revealed about yourself.””
And as he walked away, Brittany made one final mistake.
She whispered:
“If Renee were still alive, Kayla wouldn't be acting like this.””
Darius stopped.
Slowly, he turned around.
“What did you just say?””
Brittany swallowed.
But it was too late.
At 4:42 p.m., the first guests arrived.
Nobody knew the engagement celebration had just become a disaster.
And nobody knew that Brittany had already started preparing a story to save herself.
Because while Darius was upstairs checking on his daughter, Brittany had quietly sent a message to someone.
I need you to come over. Something went wrong.
The reply arrived almost immediately.
Did you get rid of the hair?
Brittany stared at the screen.
Then she typed:
May you like
Not all of it.
And downstairs, a man who had no business being at the Mitchell house was about to walk through the front door.
