Chapter 7: The Woman Who Planned to Become Kayla's Mother
Darius didn't sleep that night.
He sat in his office with the recovered note on the desk.
Three weeks before meeting him, Brittany had already been given instructions.
She hadn't fallen in love with a grieving widower.
She had approached him with a plan.
Every dinner.
Every kind word.
Every birthday gift she had bought Kayla.
Every time she had kissed Darius goodnight.
It had all been part of an arrangement.
At 6:30 a.m., Detective Bennett arrived.
She placed a thick folder on his desk.
“We found additional evidence.””
Darius looked up.
“Tell me.””
“Brittany used several different identities over the past five years. She has been connected to at least two financial investigations.””
“Was Logan involved?””
“Yes. He was her partner in one of the schemes.””
Darius shook his head.
“And my daughter?””
Detective Bennett opened the folder.
“We found a document titled 'Guardianship Transition Plan.''”
Darius went still.
“What does that mean?””
“It appears Brittany intended to obtain legal authority over Kayla after marrying you.””
“Why?””
“To gain control of the family trust.””
Darius stared at the document.
The plan described how Brittany would gradually become responsible for Kayla's daily care.
It included school arrangements, medical authorization, and financial oversight.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
The child must become dependent on Brittany before the wedding.
Darius felt sick.
He remembered Kayla telling him she had wanted Brittany to like her.
He remembered the little girl asking whether she had done something wrong.
His hands clenched.
“She was manipulating my daughter.””
Detective Bennett nodded.
“That's what the evidence suggests.””
“Did she plan to hurt her?””
“We found messages discussing how to make Kayla easier to control.””
Darius looked up.
“Show me.””
The detective handed him a printed conversation.
Brittany had written:
She needs to understand that I'm going to be in charge. Her father won't always be there.
Logan replied:
Then make her understand before the wedding.
Darius pushed the papers away.
“Get her away from my daughter.””
“She is currently being held for questioning. We're also seeking additional charges.””
Darius nodded.
Then he noticed something else.
“What is this?””
He pointed to a paragraph in the file.
Detective Bennett hesitated.
“That's the part we haven't explained yet.””
Darius read the sentence.
If the marriage cannot proceed, activate alternative custody arrangement.
He looked up.
“What alternative arrangement?””
The detective closed the folder.
“We believe Brittany had been preparing a claim that you were an unfit parent.””
Darius stared at her.
“On what grounds?””
“Financial instability. Emotional distress. Alleged neglect.””
He laughed bitterly.
“Neglect?””
“The plan included statements from people who were supposed to testify that Kayla was frequently left unattended.””
Darius looked at the names.
One belonged to a former housekeeper.
Another belonged to a neighbor.
The third made his blood run cold.
Evelyn Carter.
“No.””
Detective Bennett looked at him.
“What?””
“Evelyn would never do that.””
“We haven't established whether she was aware of the plan.””
Darius stood.
“She's been protecting Kayla since she was born.””
“I understand.””
“Then find out who used her name.””
At 10:15 a.m., Darius returned to the beach house.
Evelyn was preparing breakfast.
Kayla sat at the kitchen table, coloring a picture.
“Daddy!””
He kissed her forehead.
“What are you drawing?””
“Me and Mommy.””
He smiled.
“That's beautiful.””
Kayla pointed at the second figure.
“That's Miss Evelyn.””
Evelyn laughed softly.
“Well, I feel honored.””
Darius looked at her.
“Evelyn, can I speak with you?””
Her smile faded.
“Of course.””
They stepped into the adjoining room.
He showed her the guardianship document.
Evelyn read it.
Then she covered her mouth.
“My name?””
Darius nodded.
“Your name appears as a witness.””
She shook her head.
“I never signed this.””
“Are you sure?””
“Mr. Mitchell, I would never say you neglected Kayla.””
Darius studied her face.
“I believe you.””
Evelyn took a breath.
“There's something I should tell you.””
“What?””
“Brittany once asked me to sign a paper.””
Darius frowned.
“When?””
“About two months ago. She said it was a routine document confirming that I had been employed in the household.””
“Did you sign it?””
“No. I told her I wanted you to review it first.””
Darius nodded.
“Good.””
“But she became very angry.””
“What did she say?””
Evelyn looked toward the kitchen.
“She said that if I didn't cooperate, I would lose my job.””
Darius's expression hardened.
“She threatened you?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I didn't want to create problems before the wedding.””
Darius lowered his head.
He had been so focused on building a new relationship that he hadn't noticed what was happening inside his own home.
“I should have listened more carefully.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“You were trying to be happy again.””
He looked at her.
“And I nearly let someone hurt the most important person in my life.””
That afternoon, Kayla asked to visit Renee's grave.
Darius took her to the cemetery.
Evelyn came along.
Kayla carried a small bouquet of white flowers.
When they reached the headstone, she placed the flowers carefully at its base.
“Hi, Mommy.””
Darius stood behind her.
Kayla touched the engraved name.
“I miss you.””
A breeze moved through the trees.
She looked up.
“Daddy says you're proud of me.””
Darius nodded.
“I am.””
Kayla turned toward him.
“Do you think Mommy would be angry with Brittany?””
He crouched.
“I think Mommy would be sad that someone hurt you. But she'd want you to feel safe again.””
Kayla thought about that.
Then she asked:
“Can we go home now?””
“Of course.””
As they walked away, Darius's phone rang.
Detective Bennett.
“We identified the person who forged Evelyn's signature.””
“Who?””
“Brittany's attorney.””
Darius frowned.
“Why would her attorney do that?””
“We're investigating. But there's something more important.””
“What?””
“We found an earlier guardianship application.””
Darius stopped walking.
“How early?””
“Eight months before Brittany became engaged to you.””
He stared at the cemetery gates.
The plan had started long before he realized Brittany was part of his life.
Then Detective Bennett said:
“Mr. Mitchell, the application was submitted by someone claiming to be Renee's legal representative.””
Darius felt his heart stop.
“Who?””
May you like
The detective answered.
“Your wife's former attorney.””
