Chapter 4: The Secret Renee Left Behind
Darius stared at the key in Brittany's hand.
It was small, polished, and unmistakably familiar.
He had seen it before.
Renee used to wear it on a thin gold chain around her neck.
After her funeral, he searched everywhere for it.
He had never found it.
“Where did you get that?”” he asked.
Brittany closed her fingers around the key.
“It's mine.””
“No, it isn't.””
“You don't know everything about Renee.””
Darius stepped forward.
“Give it to me.””
Brittany smiled.
“Why? So you can keep pretending your dead wife was perfect?””
“Don't speak about her.””
“Why? Because you still love her?””
Darius said nothing.
Brittany walked farther into the bedroom.
“You know what your problem is, Darius? You never really wanted a wife. You wanted someone to fill Renee's place while you continued worshipping her memory.””
“You knew that before you agreed to marry me.””
“I thought I could change things.””
“You thought you could change my daughter.””
Brittany's expression hardened.
“I thought I could make this family normal.””
“By shaving a six-year-old child's head?””
She looked away.
“That was a mistake.””
“No. It was a choice.””
Darius held out his hand.
“Give me the key.””
Brittany laughed softly.
“You have no idea what's inside that box.””
“Then tell me.””
“Not until you listen.””
Darius lowered his hand.
“I'm listening.””
She took a breath.
“Renee wasn't the woman you think she was.””
He stared at her.
“Be careful.””
“She kept secrets. She had money you never knew about. Documents.
Accounts. Things she never told you.””
Darius shook his head.
“Renee told me everything that mattered.””
“Apparently not.””
Brittany held up the key.
“There's something inside that box that belongs to me.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
Then she said:
“Something your wife stole from my family.””
Darius felt the room shift around him.
“That's impossible.””
“Is it?””
He reached for his phone.
Brittany immediately stepped backward.
“Don't.””
“I'm calling the police.””
“Then you'll never find out what Renee really did.””
Darius stopped.
He wanted answers.
Not because he believed Brittany.
Because Renee's name was involved.
And he needed to know what this woman was trying to hide.
“Tell me everything.””
Brittany placed the key on the dressing table.
“Years ago, my father worked with Renee's family. There was a financial agreement. Money disappeared.
Documents disappeared. My father went to prison.””
Darius frowned.
“Renee never mentioned your father.””
“Because she knew what he had done.””
“What does the box have to do with it?””
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Brittany looked directly at him.
“That your wife wasn't innocent.””
Darius stared at her.
Then he picked up the key.
“I'm opening the box.””
The wooden box was hidden behind a loose panel in the bottom of an old wardrobe.
Darius remembered Renee placing it there years ago.
He had watched her do it.
She had smiled when he asked what she was hiding.
“Something for Kayla,” she had said.
He had never questioned her.
Now, with Brittany standing behind him, he inserted the gold key.
The lock clicked.
Inside were several envelopes, a small velvet pouch, and a sealed document.
Darius carefully removed the document.
His name was written on the front.
Underneath it were three words.
For Darius, when needed.
His hands trembled.
He opened the envelope.
The first page was a handwritten letter.
He recognized Renee's handwriting immediately.
My love,
If you're reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.
Darius stopped.
He looked toward Brittany.
She was watching him.
“Keep reading,” she said.
He ignored her.
There are people who may someday try to use Kayla to gain access to what I left behind. I need you to understand that the person who comes looking for the gold key may not be telling you the truth.
Darius looked up.
Brittany's face had changed.
She no longer looked confident.
He continued.
Years ago, I discovered that someone close to my family was stealing money from a trust established for our daughter. I collected the documents, but I could not expose the truth immediately.
Darius turned the page.
There were bank statements.
Copies of legal agreements.
A list of names.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Robert Bennett.
Brittany's father.
Darius looked at her.
“Your father stole money from a trust?””
Brittany shook her head.
“That's not what those documents mean.””
He picked up another page.
The trust had been established for Kayla before she was born.
It contained millions of dollars.
Money from Renee's family inheritance, investment returns, and a life insurance arrangement.
Darius had known Renee had money.
But he had never known about this trust.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
Brittany answered quickly.
“Because she didn't trust you.””
He turned toward her.
“Stop.””
“You're reading one side of the story!””
Darius picked up another envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Renee stood beside a young man.
Darius recognized him.
Logan.
He was younger, but unmistakable.
On the back, Renee had written:
The first person who warned me about the Bennett family.
Darius looked at Brittany.
“Why was Logan working with my wife?””
Brittany's mouth opened.
Then closed.
Darius removed the last document.
It was a legal statement bearing Renee's signature.
The statement explained that Logan had secretly helped Renee gather evidence against Robert Bennett.
But Logan had later disappeared with copies of the documents.
Darius looked up.
“Why did you tell me Logan was your former fiancé?””
Brittany's eyes narrowed.
“Because he was.””
“Why did you tell me he disappeared after stealing your money?””
“Because he did.””
“Then why did he come here tonight asking you about the house and the accounts?””
Brittany said nothing.
Darius returned to the letter.
There was one final paragraph.
If anyone comes into your home claiming that they deserve access to Kayla's inheritance, do not believe them. The person responsible for stealing from our daughter may be closer than you think.
Darius slowly lowered the page.
He looked at Brittany.
She was standing completely still.
“Who are you really working for?””
She smiled.
Then she said something that made his blood run cold.
“I'm working for the person who owns half of what you think is yours.””
At that moment, Darius's phone rang.
Marcus.
He answered immediately.
“What did you find?””
Marcus sounded urgent.
“I got access to the old court records. There is something you need to know.””
“Go ahead.””
“Robert Bennett wasn't the only person involved in the original fraud.””
Darius looked at Brittany.
“Who else?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Someone who had access to Renee's family trust.””
Darius closed his eyes.
“Who?””
“Her attorney.””
Darius frowned.
“Which attorney?””
Marcus gave him the name.
Darius recognized it immediately.
It was the man who had handled Renee's estate.
The man who had attended her funeral.
The man who had helped Darius transfer the family properties into his own name.
But there was something even worse.
Marcus continued.
“He is still listed as the legal trustee of Kayla's inheritance.””
Darius gripped the phone.
“That's impossible. I signed papers years ago.””
“I checked. Those papers never transferred full control.””
“Then who controls the money?””
Marcus paused.
“Your lawyer.””
Darius looked toward Brittany.
She was no longer watching him.
She was looking at the open box.
Then she whispered:
“Now you understand.””
Darius slowly turned.
“Understand what?””
Brittany reached into her handbag and removed a second document.
She placed it on the table.
It was a power-of-attorney agreement.
Darius scanned the first page.
His eyes stopped at the signature.
His signature.
The signature he had placed on the document three months earlier, when Brittany had told him it was necessary for wedding arrangements and household administration.
He stared at it.
“What is this?””
Brittany smiled.
“The reason I agreed to marry you.””
Downstairs, the doorbell rang.
Neither of them moved.
Then the security guard called through the intercom.
“Mr. Mitchell, there's a gentleman here asking for Miss Collins.””
Darius pressed the button.
“Who?””
The guard answered:
“Mr. Robert Bennett.””
Brittany closed her eyes.
May you like
Then she smiled.
“Looks like we're all finally going to have a family meeting.””
