Chapter 8: The House Where the Lies Began
I had never driven so fast in my life.
The police followed us in two vehicles, but I barely noticed them.
All I could see was Lily's face in the photograph.
Her pink hair clips.
Her little hands folded in her lap.
She was awake.
She was looking directly at whoever had taken the picture.
I called her phone watch.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Noah sat beside me in the back seat.
“Is Lily okay?””
I forced myself to breathe.
“I'm going to bring her home.””
He looked at the photograph.
“Vanessa said she would never hurt us.””
I turned toward him.
“Did she say that often?””
He nodded.
“She said families have secrets, and good children don't ask questions.””
I looked out the window.
“Good children are allowed to ask anything.””
Noah was quiet.
Then he asked, “Was my mother good?””
I thought of Emily's face in the recording.
Her exhaustion.
Her courage.
Her determination to tell the truth.
“Yes,” I said.
“She was.””
The old Reed estate stood on a hill overlooking the water.
The house was enormous, with white columns, dark windows, and a circular driveway.
Richard Cole had purchased it years earlier through a private company.
As our car approached the gate, I noticed the security cameras turning toward us.
The gate opened.
A man stood near the entrance.
He was wearing a dark suit.
“Mr. Hayes,” he said.
“Where is my daughter?””
“Inside.””
I stepped forward.
“Take me to her.””
He opened the door.
The first room was filled with antique furniture and expensive paintings.
Lily was sitting on a sofa.
Her shoes were missing.
Her hair was messy.
But she was alive.
“Daddy!””
I crossed the room and pulled her into my arms.
She clung to my neck.
“Daddy, I told them I wanted to go home.””
I kissed her forehead.
“I'm here.””
“Vanessa said you were coming.””
I looked across the room.
Vanessa stood near the fireplace.
Richard sat in a leather chair with a glass of whiskey.
Victor was beside him.
“You're late,” Richard said.
I held Lily tighter.
“Let her go.””
Richard smiled.
“She is perfectly safe.””
“You kidnapped my daughter.””
“Don't use dramatic language.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You staged the theft. You forged documents. You stole millions. And now you've taken a child.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You still don't understand.””
“Then explain it.””
She looked toward Noah.
“Both children belong with their biological family.””
Michael stepped into the room behind us.
“Then why did you hide them?””
Vanessa's expression changed.
“Because you were weak.””
Michael laughed bitterly.
“You switched the babies.””
“I saved them.””
“You separated them from their mother.””
“I gave them a future.””
Richard placed his glass on the table.
“Enough.””
He stood.
“Daniel, you have no idea how much trouble you have caused.””
I looked at him.
“Did you arrange Emily's accident?””
Richard didn't answer.
“Did you?””
He walked toward the window.
“Emily was an emotional woman. She made promises she couldn't keep.””
“Did you kill her?””
He turned.
“Your ex-wife was about to destroy a forty-million-dollar trust over a personal disagreement.””
My blood ran cold.
“So you had her killed.””
Richard sighed.
“People make mistakes when they become desperate.””
Lily began crying.
I turned her face against my shoulder.
“Don't listen, sweetheart.””
Richard continued.
“Michael was supposed to marry Vanessa. The children were supposed to remain under the family trust. Everything was arranged.””
“Except Emily refused.””
“Yes.””
“And you killed her.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“I didn't touch her.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Father, stop.””
Richard ignored her.
“Emily was warned. She was offered money. She was given an opportunity to disappear quietly.””
Michael stared at him.
“What happened to her car?””
Richard took a sip of whiskey.
“An unfortunate mechanical failure.””
I felt something inside me break.
I wanted to attack him.
I wanted to make him answer for every year Lily had spent without her mother.
But Lily was in my arms.
And she needed me to remain calm.
Robert stepped forward.
“Richard, the police have the recording.””
Richard smiled.
“Which recording?””
“The audio from Emily's hospital room.””
For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.
Then Victor quietly moved toward the door.
Two officers appeared behind him.
“Don't move,” one ordered.
Richard set down his glass.
“Do you have a warrant?””
The officer stepped forward.
“We have enough evidence to detain you pending further investigation.””
Vanessa suddenly grabbed Lily's arm.
“Come with me!””
Lily screamed.
I turned sharply.
“Let go!””
Vanessa pulled harder.
“She belongs with me!””
I pushed her hand away.
“She's not yours!””
A struggle broke out.
Michael grabbed Vanessa's wrist.
She slapped him.
Then she screamed something that silenced the entire room.
“I WAS THE ONE WHO CARRIED HER!””
I froze.
Michael looked at her.
Rachel, who had entered behind the officers, stopped in the doorway.
Vanessa's chest heaved.
“You all keep talking about Emily as if she was some innocent victim. She agreed to carry the children. She signed the contract. She took the money.””
I stared at her.
“What contract?””
Richard looked furious.
“Vanessa, shut up.””
But she had already begun.
“Emily was my surrogate. She was supposed to carry both babies for Michael and me. We paid her. We had an agreement.””
Michael shook his head.
“She wasn't supposed to lose them.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Then you should have married me when your father asked!””
The room fell silent.
I looked at Michael.
He nodded slowly.
“Vanessa was pregnant before the wedding. We were supposed to marry after the twins were born.””
I stared at him.
“But she couldn't carry them?””
“No,” he said.
“She couldn't safely carry a pregnancy. Emily agreed to help.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Then why did you tell everyone you had suffered a miscarriage?””
Her face crumpled.
“Because I wanted people to feel sorry for me.””
The honesty was more disturbing than any lie.
She had built an entire identity around a tragedy that had never happened to her.
And she had used my sympathy to enter my family.
Richard suddenly lunged toward Robert.
The officers tackled him.
Victor tried to escape through the side door, but another officer stopped him.
Vanessa stood motionless.
Then she looked at Lily.
“Sweetheart, tell them you want to come with me.””
Lily shook her head.
Vanessa knelt.
“Remember the dollhouse I bought you?””
Lily began crying harder.
“Remember how I took you shopping?””
“Stop,” I said.
Vanessa ignored me.
“Tell them you love me.””
Lily looked at her.
Then she said something I will never forget.
“I loved you because I thought you loved me.””
Vanessa's face collapsed.
For a moment, she looked like a woman who had finally understood what she had destroyed.
Then the officers led her away.
As she passed me, she whispered:
“You still don't know who signed the original contract.””
I looked at her.
She smiled sadly.
May you like
“Ask Emily's lawyer.””
And then she was gone.
