Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew Everything

Rachel Hayes had always been the quiet one.

At family dinners, she sat near the end of the table and barely spoke. Vanessa described her as unstable, jealous, and unreliable.

I had never questioned that description.

Now she stood in front of me with a photograph of Lily sleeping in her bed.

“Where did you get that?”” I demanded.

Rachel placed the photograph on the table.

“Your house.””

Michael stood.

“Rachel, don't.””

She turned toward him.

“Don't tell me what to do. You've been lying for seven years.””

I looked between them.

“Both of you are going to start explaining.””

Rachel pulled out the chair opposite me.

She sat down.

“Vanessa didn't just hide a baby. She built an entire financial scheme around him.””

She opened the envelope.

Inside were bank statements, medical records, and copies of trust documents.

“Michael's family established a fund to support children with serious medical conditions. Vanessa discovered that one of the beneficiaries was her son.””

“Why couldn't she simply use the fund?”” I asked.

“Because she wasn't legally recognized as his mother. Michael's father had arranged for the child to be placed with another family temporarily.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Emily.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Emily agreed to raise Vanessa's son for a short period while the medical treatment was arranged. But she discovered that the trust was being used to transfer money into private accounts.””

Michael shook his head.

“I didn't know.””

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“You always say that.””

She turned back to me.

“Vanessa needed someone with a clean financial history to help secure the inheritance. When she met you, she saw an opportunity.””

I felt a chill.

“Me?””

“You owned a successful construction company. You had no criminal record. You had a daughter with a legal birth certificate. You were exactly the kind of person she could use.””

I looked at the documents.

One transfer caught my eye.

$2,400,000.

Paid from the Reed Children's Trust to a private company.

The company name was Hayes Development Holdings.

My company.

I shook my head.

“I never authorized this.””

Rachel nodded.

“That's why Vanessa married you.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Daniel, she used your business as a channel to move the money. She made it look like the payments were legitimate construction contracts.””

I looked at him.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

“Because Vanessa is planning to leave the country.””

Rachel added, “And she needs Lily.””

My blood went cold.

“What do you mean?””

Rachel slid another document across the table.

It was a custody agreement.

My name appeared at the bottom.

So did Vanessa's.

The signature looked authentic.

But I had never signed it.

According to the document, I had voluntarily granted Vanessa temporary guardianship of Lily in the event of my incapacitation.

“That's a forgery,” I said.

Rachel nodded.

“She's planning to use it.””

Michael looked toward the entrance.

“She already knows we're here.””

I followed his gaze.

A black SUV had stopped outside.

The driver's door opened.

A man stepped out.

He wore a gray suit and carried a leather briefcase.

Rachel immediately stood.

“That's him.””

“Who?””

“Victor Shaw. Vanessa's attorney.””

The man entered the diner and walked directly toward our table.

“Mr. Hayes,” he said politely.

“My client would like to speak with you.””

“I don't have a client.””

He placed a document on the table.

“Your wife has filed an emergency petition concerning the safety of your daughter.””

I stared at him.

“On what grounds?””

“Your recent behavior, including your decision to remove Lily from the hotel without consulting her legal guardian.””

“I'm her father.””

“Of course. But Mrs. Hayes has evidence suggesting that you may be experiencing emotional instability.””

I laughed.

“Are you serious?””

He opened his briefcase.

Inside was a medical report.

It stated that I had recently been prescribed medication for severe anxiety and had been exhibiting signs of paranoid behavior.

I had never seen the doctor named on the report.

I had never taken the medication.

It was another fabrication.

Rachel leaned forward.

“Victor, you know this is false.””

He ignored her.

“Mr. Hayes, if you cooperate, we can avoid an unnecessary legal battle.””

“What does cooperation mean?””

“Allow Mrs. Hayes temporary custody of Lily while these matters are investigated.””

“No.””

He closed the briefcase.

“Then I strongly advise you to prepare for court.””

I stood.

“Tell Vanessa she can explain everything to a judge.””

Victor smiled faintly.

“She intends to.””

He turned toward the door.

Before leaving, he looked back at me.

“One more thing. Your daughter has already been registered for an international flight tomorrow morning.””

I felt my heart stop.

“What?””

“Mrs. Hayes has arranged a family trip.””

“Where?””

He glanced at his watch.

“London.””

Then he walked out.

I immediately called the police.

Rachel grabbed my arm.

“Daniel, listen to me. The flight isn't the real problem.””

“What could possibly be worse?””

She looked directly into my eyes.

“Vanessa doesn't intend to take Lily to London.””

Michael went pale.

Rachel continued.

“She intends to exchange her for the boy.””

I stared at her.

“What boy?””

Rachel took out one final photograph.

It showed a teenage boy standing beside Vanessa.

He had dark hair, brown eyes, and a faint birthmark behind his left ear.

The same birthmark Lily had.

On the back, someone had written:

*Noah Reed. Age seven. Location: St. Catherine's Children's Home.*

May you like

And beneath it was a handwritten note.

*Transfer scheduled for tomorrow.*
