Chapter 1: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
“If Daniel finds out what happened to the baby, we're both finished.””
Vanessa's voice echoed through the ballroom speakers.
Nobody moved.
Three hundred guests stood beneath the golden chandeliers, staring at the giant screen. My wife, the woman I had trusted with my daughter, was kissing a man I had personally mourned two years earlier.
Michael Reed.
Her supposedly dead former fiancé.
I could hear Lily breathing beside me. Her small hand was wrapped around two of my fingers, and her nails were digging into my skin.
“Daddy,” she whispered.
“What baby?””
I couldn't answer.
Vanessa finally turned toward me.
Her face had lost every trace of the elegant confidence she had worn all evening. Her diamond earrings were still missing from her ears, her expensive dress was wrinkled from the struggle with the security manager, and her carefully constructed reputation was collapsing in front of everyone she had invited.
“Daniel, please,” she said.
I stared at her.
“Who is Michael?””
She swallowed.
“He's someone from my past.””
“Someone from your past who supposedly died?””
“It's complicated.””
I laughed once, without humor.
“You told me you watched his boat disappear. You told me his family held a funeral. You told me you spent three days identifying his belongings.””
Vanessa glanced at the screen.
“Not here.””
“Not here?”” I repeated.
“You just accused my daughter of stealing your necklace in front of three hundred people. You searched her purse. You emptied her belongings onto a table.
You made her cry. And now you want privacy?””
Lily moved closer to my leg.
The hotel manager, Mr. Collins, approached with the security tablet.
“Mr. Hayes, we should probably move this conversation to a private room.””
“No,” I said.
Vanessa's eyes widened.
“Daniel!””
“No. Everyone here deserves to know why my seven-year-old daughter was publicly humiliated.””
I turned toward the screen.
“Play the footage again.””
The manager hesitated.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“I forbid you to show that recording.””
Mr. Collins looked uncomfortable.
“Ma'am, the footage was obtained from the hotel's security system. Mr. Hayes is the registered guest, and the incident occurred inside his private suite.””
“I'm his wife.””
“And I'm her father,” I replied.
The manager nodded toward the technician.
The footage restarted.
There was Vanessa, entering our suite hallway at 8:42 p.m.
She checked both directions.
Then she opened Lily's pink purse and slipped the necklace inside.
At 8:49 p.m., Michael appeared.
He handed her a brown envelope.
She kissed him.
And then came those words.
If Daniel finds out what happened to the baby, we're both finished.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What baby?””
She pressed her lips together.
Michael wasn't in the ballroom anymore. He had disappeared sometime between the second recording and the guests gathering around the screen.
But I wasn't going to let that distract me.
“Vanessa, answer me.””
She looked at Lily.
Then she looked at me.
“I can explain everything.””
“Start with the baby.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was pregnant before we got married.””
I felt the floor shift beneath me.
“What?””
“Michael and I were together. We were engaged. You knew that.””
“I knew you had a previous relationship. I didn't know there was a child.””
She shook her head.
“The baby didn't survive.””
I stared at her.
“When?””
“Before I met you.””
“Then why did you say Daniel finds out what happened to the baby?””
She looked away.
“Because Michael has been threatening me.””
“Threatening you with what?””
“I don't know what he's told you.””
I stepped closer.
“Vanessa, you have about five seconds to stop treating me like an idiot.””
Her composure cracked.
“He has documents. He says he can destroy everything.””
“What documents?””
She didn't answer.
Lily tugged my jacket.
“Daddy, can we go home now?””
I looked down.
Her cheeks were wet. The chocolate frosting she had been laughing about earlier was still smeared near her mouth.
“Of course, sweetheart.””
I bent and picked up her little plastic horse from the table. Then I gathered her drawing and the purple crayon.
Vanessa watched me.
“Daniel, you can't just walk away.””
“I can. Watch me.””
“You're making a terrible mistake.””
I turned.
“No, Vanessa. The mistake was trusting you with the most important person in my life.””
Her expression hardened.
“You'll regret choosing her over me.””
I stopped.
For the first time that evening, I wasn't angry.
I was frightened.
Because I suddenly understood that the woman standing in front of me wasn't simply a jealous stepmother who had staged a theft.
She had planned something.
And whatever it was, my daughter had become part of it.
As I walked toward the ballroom exit, Mr. Collins caught my arm.
“Mr. Hayes, there's one more thing.””
I turned.
He lowered his voice.
“Before the man disappeared, he left something at the front desk. He specifically instructed us to give it to you if you were present when the footage was shown.””
He handed me a brown envelope.
My name was written across the front.
Inside was a photograph.
A newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.
On the back, someone had written six words.
*Your daughter has a living brother.*
I looked at Lily.
Then I looked at the photograph again.
Because the baby in the picture had the same unusual birthmark as my daughter.

And beneath the photograph was a hospital bracelet bearing a date from seven years earlier.
The date Lily was born.
