Chapter 6: The Birth Certificate That Changed Everything
Vanessa's hand remained extended toward Noah.
Nobody moved.
The woman holding the court order cleared her throat.
“Mr. Hayes, I understand this is an emotional situation, but the document is legally binding. Mrs. Hayes has been granted temporary guardianship of both children.””
Robert stepped forward.
“May I see the original?””
The woman hesitated.
“I'm sorry?””
“The original court order. Not a photocopy.””
She handed it to him.
Robert examined the document carefully, then turned to the final page.
“Who prepared this petition?””
Victor Shaw answered immediately.
“Our office.””
“And who verified the biological information?””
“The court reviewed the supporting documentation.””
Robert looked up.
“Which supporting documentation?””
Victor adjusted his tie.
“Medical records, birth certificates, and sworn statements.””
“From whom?””
“Mrs. Hayes.””
Robert nodded slowly.
“Then I have some unfortunate news.””
Vanessa's expression tightened.
“What news?””
Robert removed a document from his briefcase.
“The court was told that both biological parents were deceased. One of them is standing right here.””
He pointed toward Michael.
The woman holding the order looked at Michael.
“Are you Michael Reed?””
“Yes.””
“Are you alive?””
Michael gave a bitter laugh.
“Apparently.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That's irrelevant. Michael abandoned his parental responsibilities years ago.””
Robert raised his hand.
“Perhaps. But abandonment does not make a living person deceased.””
He placed another document beside the court order.
“And this is the original hospital record.””
Vanessa looked at it.
For the first time, I saw her eyes move rapidly across a page.
Her lips parted.
Then she looked at Robert.
“Where did you get that?””
“From the hospital archive.””
“That document is confidential.””
“Which is why I obtained it through the proper legal channels.””
Robert pointed to the signatures.
“Your authorization appears here. So does the name of the person who altered the birth records.””
Vanessa said nothing.
The woman from the court picked up the page.
“Mrs. Hayes, did you sign this?””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“I signed hundreds of medical documents.””
“This one authorizes the alteration of two newborn identities.””
“That is not what it says.””
Robert opened the attached affidavit.
“It says that one infant died during delivery and another was transferred into the care of a private guardian. But the original neonatal record contradicts both statements.””
Victor moved closer.
“Mr. Ellis, this is becoming inappropriate. My client has a valid order.””
Robert looked at him.
“Then you won't object to an immediate review of the evidence.””
Victor's face darkened.
“I'm advising you to stop.””
“And I'm advising you to read the next page.””
Robert placed a second document on the table.
It was a signed statement from a neonatal nurse named Patricia Wells.
According to the statement, Vanessa had entered the hospital nursery shortly after midnight on the night the twins were born.
She had been accompanied by a man wearing hospital scrubs.
The nurse had watched them remove two identification bracelets.
She had reported the incident.
Her report had disappeared.
But she had kept a copy.
And now, seven years later, she had agreed to testify.
Vanessa stared at the statement.
“Patricia is lying.””
A voice came from behind us.
“No, Vanessa. She isn't.””
An older woman entered the room.
Her hair was white, her shoulders slightly hunched, and she held a walking stick.
Robert turned.
“Ms. Wells.””
Patricia nodded.
“I thought it was time.””
Vanessa took a step backward.
“You should be retired.””
“I am.””
“You have no business here.””
Patricia looked at Noah.
“I have every business here.””
She approached him and knelt with difficulty.
“Hello, sweetheart. I don't know if you remember me.””
Noah shook his head.
“That's all right. You were very small when I last saw you.””
She looked at me.
“Your daughter was supposed to go home with you that night. Both babies were.””
My throat tightened.
“What happened?””
Patricia glanced at Vanessa.
“She came into the nursery and said one of the babies had been promised to her. She claimed there had been a private arrangement.””
“That wasn't true,” Michael said.
Patricia nodded.
“I know that now.””
She turned to the court representative.
“I watched her exchange the identification bracelets. I saw the nurse supervisor sign the revised paperwork. I also heard her threaten to have the hospital shut down if anyone spoke.””
Vanessa's face turned red.
“Enough!””
Her voice cracked through the room.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed!””
Noah flinched.
I immediately moved beside him.
“Don't raise your voice at him.””
Vanessa pointed at me.
“You think you're some kind of hero? You weren't even supposed to be involved!””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“What did you just say?””
She seemed to realize what she had revealed.
Then she smiled again.
“Nothing.””
Robert turned toward the court representative.
“I formally request that this guardianship order be suspended pending an emergency hearing. The petition contains demonstrably false information.””
The woman nodded.
“I'll contact the issuing judge immediately.””
Victor grabbed Vanessa's arm.
“Don't say another word.””
But Vanessa pulled away.
“No. I'm finished being treated like a criminal.””
She looked at me.
“Daniel, you need to understand something. Lily was never supposed to be yours.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
She leaned closer.
“Emily made a deal. She promised me both children.””
Michael lunged forward.
“You're lying!””
Vanessa laughed.
“Ask him what happened after the twins were born. Ask him why he disappeared. Ask him why Emily suddenly changed her mind.””
Michael looked away.
I felt the ground disappear beneath me.
“Michael?””
He didn't answer.
Vanessa smiled triumphantly.
“See? Even now, he can't tell you.””
Then she turned toward the exit.
Two police officers stepped into her path.
“Mrs. Hayes, we'd like you to accompany us.””
Her smile disappeared.
“On what grounds?””
“Allegations of document fraud, unlawful entry, and potential interference with a minor custody proceeding.””
She looked at me one final time.
“You think you've won.””
I didn't answer.
She leaned toward my ear.
“You haven't even found the person who paid Emily to keep quiet.””
Then the officers escorted her out.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Noah sat beside Mrs. Brooks, staring at the floor.
I crouched beside him.
“Are you okay?””
He nodded, but his eyes were wet.
“Is Lily really my sister?””
“Yes.””
“Can I see her?””
I smiled.
“I think she'd like that very much.””
But Michael still hadn't spoken.
I stood and faced him.
“Now tell me what Vanessa was talking about.””
He looked at the floor.
Then he said something that made Robert close his briefcase.
“Emily didn't just give birth to the twins.””
He swallowed.
“She was paid to carry them.””
May you like
And the person who paid her wasn't Vanessa.
It was me.
