Chapter 3: Room 314
The police arrived at my house twenty minutes later.
Two officers inspected the property while a third took photographs of the message and the picture of Lily.
There were no signs of forced entry.
The back door was locked.
The windows were closed.
But the officer found something beneath Lily's bedroom window.
A cigarette butt.
And beside it, a small silver button.
It matched the buttons on Vanessa's evening coat.
I stared at it.
“She was here?””
The officer put the button into an evidence bag.
“It's possible, sir. We'll need to examine it.””
I called Robert.
He arrived shortly afterward with a folder of documents and an expression that told me he had discovered something else.
“Daniel, we need to talk.””
“Not now.””
“It's about Room 314.””
I stopped.
“You found something?””
Robert opened the folder.
“Seven years ago, the hospital temporarily transferred several newborns to a private medical facility during an emergency renovation. Room 314 was part of the neonatal unit.””
“What does that have to do with Lily?””
“Michael Reed worked there.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“He wasn't a doctor. He was a financial administrator for a charitable medical foundation that funded the unit.””
“And Vanessa?””
“She was listed as an authorized visitor.””
My mind raced.
“Why?””
Robert hesitated.
“Because she had given birth.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“That's impossible.””
“Daniel, the hospital's original records indicate that Vanessa was admitted under a different surname two days before Lily was born.””
I grabbed the folder.
The name was unfamiliar.
Vanessa Cole.
I looked up.
“Why would she hide her identity?””
Robert pointed to another page.
“Because she was already engaged to Michael. And because the baby she delivered was not the baby listed under her name.””
I read the document again.
A newborn male.
Transferred to Room 314.
The mother listed as Vanessa Cole.
The father listed as Michael Reed.
But the transfer authorization showed something even stranger.
The infant had been moved from one cot to another.
A handwritten note appeared at the bottom.
*Replacement completed. Identity records to follow.*
I felt sick.
“What does that mean?””
Robert's voice dropped.
“It suggests that someone switched the identities of two newborns.””
The room seemed to tilt.
I remembered the first time Vanessa met Lily.
She had brought a pink blanket and a stuffed rabbit.
She had told me she wanted to be the kind of stepmother who made my daughter feel loved.
I had believed her.
Now I wondered whether she had recognized Lily immediately.
“Where is Michael?”” I asked.
Robert checked his phone.
“He sent me an address.””
“What?””
“He wants to meet.””
I looked at the message.
A location appeared.
A small diner near the waterfront.
The meeting was scheduled for noon.
“I'll go.””
Robert shook his head.
“Absolutely not alone.””
We arrived at the diner at 11:55.
Michael was sitting in a booth near the window.
He looked older than he had in the security footage. There were dark circles beneath his eyes, and the scar on his cheek appeared deeper in daylight.
He stood when he saw me.
“Daniel.””
I didn't sit.
“You have five minutes.””
Michael nodded.
“That's fair.””
“Start with the baby.””
He looked down.
“Vanessa gave birth to a boy. Emily gave birth to twins. One of them was Lily.””
I gripped the edge of the table.
“Where is the other child?””
“Alive.””
“Where?””
Michael glanced toward the window.
“Before I answer that, you need to understand what Vanessa did.””
“I don't care about her excuses.””
“It's not an excuse. It's the reason she has been trying to control your family.””
He pulled a folded photograph from his jacket.
It showed two newborn babies.
One wore a blue blanket.
The other wore pink.
“Vanessa's son was born with a congenital heart condition. The doctors told her he needed immediate treatment. She had no insurance, no money, and Michael Reed's family had already threatened to cut her off.””
“You were Michael Reed.””
He nodded.
“My father controlled the family trust. He refused to pay for treatment unless I married someone he approved of.””
I stared at him.
“So you switched the babies?””
His face twisted.
“No. I didn't know about the switch until years later.””
“Then who did it?””
“Vanessa and Emily.””
I stepped back.
“What?””
“Emily discovered that Vanessa's son had been secretly receiving treatment through a charitable fund intended for orphaned children. She found out that the fund was being manipulated. Vanessa convinced her that the only way to save the baby was to keep his identity hidden.””
I shook my head.
“Why would Emily agree?””
“Because Vanessa told her the boy would die otherwise.””
“Where does Lily fit into this?””
Michael lowered his voice.
“Lily was never supposed to be part of the arrangement. But someone changed the records after the twins were born. One child was registered under your name. The other was registered under Vanessa's.””
“Why?””
“Because the Reed family trust had a condition. If Michael had a biological heir, that child would inherit everything.””
I stared at him.
“How much?””
“Approximately forty-two million dollars.””
The number barely registered.
I was thinking about Lily.
About the boy.
About Emily's warning.
“Why did you tell Vanessa I couldn't find out about the baby?””
Michael looked at me.
“Because she believes I have proof of what happened to Emily.””
I leaned forward.
“What happened to my ex-wife?””
Michael swallowed.
“Emily found out the truth about the identity switch. She was preparing to take both children to the authorities.””
“And?””
“She was threatened.””
“By Vanessa?””
He nodded.
“Vanessa told her that if she exposed the truth, she would lose Lily forever.””
My hands trembled.
“That doesn't explain her death.””
Michael looked toward the window again.
“Daniel, Emily's car accident wasn't an accident.””
Before I could speak, a woman appeared beside our table.
She wore a dark coat and sunglasses.
She placed a small envelope in front of me.
Then she said something that made Michael go pale.
“Don't believe him. He's the reason Emily died.””
She removed her sunglasses.
I recognized her immediately.
Vanessa's younger sister.
May you like
Rachel.
And she was holding a photograph of my daughter.
