Chapter 9: The Memory I Was Never Supposed to Recover

The second recording lasted only three minutes.

But it destroyed thirty years of my life.

The detective pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then my younger voice returned.

“Why can’t I remember?””

A man answered.

My father.

“Because remembering would ruin everything.””

My hands went cold.

I had spent my entire life believing my father loved me.

Believing he protected me.

But now I heard fear in his voice.

Not love.

Fear.

The recording continued.

Marcus spoke.

“He doesn’t know who he really is.””

My father answered:

“That’s better.””

I closed my eyes.

The room disappeared.

Suddenly, memories started breaking through.

A hospital.

A little boy crying.

A woman screaming.

A name.

Adrian.

I grabbed my head.

“Stop.””

Claire rushed toward me.

“Daniel.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

Everyone watched.

I finally remembered.

Not everything.

But enough.

I wasn’t adopted.

Not exactly.

My father had two sons.

Me.

And Adrian.

But after a terrible accident, I lost my memory.

My father used that moment.

He changed records.

Changed stories.

Created a new identity.

And separated two brothers forever.

Adrian watched me.

“I knew you would remember eventually.””

I looked at him.

“You hated me.””

His eyes filled with pain.

“I hated what they turned you into.””

That hurt more.

Because maybe he was right.

Marcus had spent years manipulating everyone.

Including me.

The detective turned to Marcus.

“You’re under arrest.””

Marcus laughed.

“You think this ends with me?””

The room became quiet.

He looked at Claire.

“You know the truth.””

Claire said nothing.

“You know who really caused the accident.””

I looked at her.

“What does he mean?””

Claire closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“It was me.””

The words destroyed me.

“What?””

She cried.

“I was driving.””

Nobody moved.

“I lost control because I was trying to escape Marcus.””

I stared at her.

“Then why did you let me think you died?””

“Because Marcus wanted me dead.””

She looked at Lily.

“But I survived.””

My voice broke.

“You left me.””

“I watched you from a distance.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus threatened Lily.””

I looked at my daughter.

She was crying silently.

Claire continued:

“He said if I came back, he would expose everything and destroy you.””

I shook my head.

“So you sacrificed us?””

She looked devastated.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

The same sentence.

Again.

Everyone had used that excuse.

But this time, I believed her.

Because I saw the pain in her eyes.

Marcus was taken away.

But before leaving, he stopped beside me.

“You think you won?””

I stared at him.

“You lost.””

He smiled.

“No.””

He looked at Adrian.

“You still don’t know the final secret.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“What?””

Marcus laughed.

“Ask your brother why he really came back.””

The doors closed behind him.

Silence followed.

I turned to Adrian.

“Why did you come back?””

He didn’t answer.

“Adrian.””

Finally, he whispered:

“Because Claire asked me to.””

I frowned.

“When?””

“Before she disappeared.””

My heart tightened.

“What did she ask you to do?””

Adrian looked at Lily.

“To protect her.””

I waited.

But he didn’t continue.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

His eyes filled with guilt.

“Claire didn’t only ask me to protect Lily.””

A pause.

“She asked me to protect you.””

I looked at Claire.

“From what?””

Adrian took a deep breath.

“From yourself.””

I felt the world stop.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at the recording.

Then at me.

“Your memory didn’t disappear because of an accident.””

My heart pounded.

“Then why?””

May you like

Adrian answered quietly:

“Because you chose to forget.””
