Chapter 5: The Man Who Stole My Life

I couldn’t move.

The man standing beside the SUV had my face.

My height.

My voice.

For a terrifying second, I wondered if I was looking at a ghost.

Then Lily ran behind me.

She was shaking.

“Who is that?””

The stranger smiled.

“Daniel.””

My name coming from his mouth felt wrong.

Ethan grabbed my arm.

“We need to leave.””

I didn’t move.

“Who are you?””

The man laughed softly.

“Don’t you recognize yourself?””

My heart pounded.

He stepped closer.

“I’m the reason Marcus’s plan almost worked.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Explain.””

The boy’s face was full of fear.

“That’s not Daniel.””

The stranger smiled.

“Smart kid.””

He reached into his jacket.

Pulled out an old document.

Then threw it toward me.

I picked it up.

My hands started shaking.

It was a birth record.

A photograph.

A name.

Daniel Ashford.

But the picture wasn’t me.

It was him.

“What is this?””

The stranger looked at me.

“Your family has been lying to you your entire life.””

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted answers.

I wanted my world to stop collapsing.

“No.””

He tilted his head.

“You always wondered why you had no childhood photographs before age ten.””

I froze.

Because I had.

I had asked my parents.

They always said there had been a fire.

A fire that destroyed everything.

The stranger continued.

“You weren’t born Daniel Ashford.””

My breathing stopped.

“You were adopted.””

The lake became silent.

Ethan looked at me.

“I was trying to find a way to tell you.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“Claire knew too.””

My wife.

My dead wife.

She knew.

A thousand questions raced through my mind.

The stranger stepped closer.

“Marcus wasn’t only stealing your company.””

He pointed at me.

“He was stealing your identity.””

I looked down at the document again.

“What does that mean?””

The man smiled.

“It means the person you trusted most was never your enemy.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then who was?””

He looked directly at Ethan.

“Ask him.””

I turned.

Ethan looked away.

My voice became quiet.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

The boy swallowed.

“I found Claire that night.””

The world went still.

“What?””

“I was there before Lily.””

I stepped closer.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because Claire was still alive when I found her.””

My heart stopped.

“No.””

“She gave me the letter.””

“Stop.””

“She told me Marcus would come back.””

“Stop!””

Ethan’s voice broke.

“She told me not to let you know she survived.””

I couldn’t breathe.

My wife.

Alive?

Impossible.

I watched her die.

I saw the accident report.

I saw the funeral.

I buried her.

Then Ethan whispered the words that shattered everything I believed.

“Your wife didn’t die that night.””

A tear rolled down his face.

“She disappeared.””

The stranger beside the SUV suddenly smiled.

“Now you understand.””

I turned toward him.

“Who are you?””

He answered:

“Someone who can take you to her.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

He looked toward the road.

But before he could answer, Lily grabbed my hand.

Her voice was stronger than it had been all year.

“Daddy…”

I looked at her.

She was crying.

“She told me…”

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Lily stared at the stranger.

“Mommy told me never to trust the man who wears Daddy’s face.””

The stranger’s smile vanished.

And for the first time…

He looked afraid.

Because Lily remembered one more thing.

A secret everyone thought she had forgotten.

And she was about to say it out loud.
