Chapter 7: The Wife Who Came Back From the Dead

I forgot how to breathe.

I forgot how to move.

I forgot how the world worked.

All I could see was her.

Claire.

Standing twenty feet away.

Alive.

Her hair was longer.

Her face was thinner.

But it was her.

The woman I loved.

The woman I cried over every night.

The woman I thought I lost forever.

“Claire…”

Her name came out broken.

She took one step forward.

“Daniel.””

Then Lily screamed.

Not from fear.

From recognition.

“Mommy!””

Claire collapsed to her knees.

And Lily ran.

For the first time in a year, my daughter ran toward someone.

Not away.

Not hiding.

Running.

Claire wrapped her arms around her.

Both of them cried.

And I stood there frozen.

Watching the impossible happen.

My wife was alive.

My daughter was speaking.

But somehow, I felt more confused than ever.

Because Marcus was standing there smiling.

And Marcus was the one who brought her back.

That terrified me.

Claire noticed.

She slowly stood.

Her hand remained on Lily’s shoulder.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

I stared at her.

“How?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to come home.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

She looked at Marcus.

And the silence answered before she did.

Because of him.

I turned toward Marcus.

“You knew.””

Marcus smiled.

“I knew everything.””

The anger inside me exploded.

“You let me bury my wife!””

He didn’t react.

“You were safer believing she was dead.””

“Safer?””

I stepped toward him.

“You destroyed my daughter!””

His expression finally changed.

“She was going to expose everything.””

Claire grabbed Lily closer.

“She’s lying.””

Marcus laughed.

“Am I?””

He looked at Claire.

“Tell him.””

Claire said nothing.

“Tell him why you disappeared.””

Her eyes closed.

I felt something break inside me.

“Claire?””

She looked at me.

“I made a mistake.””

The words hurt more than I expected.

“What mistake?””

She looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“I trusted the wrong person.””

Marcus smiled.

“Exactly.””

I turned.

“Explain.””

Marcus walked closer.

“Claire discovered that your father’s company wasn’t built the way you thought.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Your family destroyed people to become powerful.””

Claire interrupted.

“Daniel, that isn’t true.””

Marcus laughed.

“You always hated admitting it.””

Claire looked at him.

“You manipulated everyone.””

He shook his head.

“No. I showed people who they really were.””

The argument felt like pieces of a puzzle falling around me.

But one thing was clear.

Nobody was telling me everything.

I looked at Claire.

“Why did you leave me?””

She started crying.

“Because I thought Marcus would hurt you.””

“And Lily?””

Her face collapsed.

“I thought he would use her to control me.””

I looked at Marcus.

“You threatened your own niece?””

He smiled.

“I offered protection.””

Lily buried her face against Claire.

I felt sick.

Then Ethan stepped forward.

“You’re still lying.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“You.””

Ethan stood tall.

“You told everyone I was dead.””

Marcus smiled.

“You should have stayed gone.””

I immediately moved between them.

“What did you do to him?””

Marcus looked amused.

“Nothing.””

Ethan’s voice shook.

“You killed my mother.””

The world went quiet.

Claire looked at me.

“Daniel…”

I looked at Ethan.

“What happened?””

He stared at Marcus.

“My mother recorded everything.””

Marcus’s smile faded.

“She had evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Your father’s real death.””

I froze.

“My father died in an accident.””

“No.””

Ethan shook his head.

“He was murdered.””

The lake became silent.

Claire stepped forward.

“And Marcus knows who did it.””

Everyone looked at Marcus.

For the first time, he looked trapped.

Then he smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

“You really thought you could bring him back and win?””

He looked at Adrian.

Then at Ethan.

Then at me.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

Marcus stepped closer.

“The person who destroyed this family isn’t me.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then who?””

Marcus looked directly at Claire.

And whispered:

“Your wife.””

Claire’s face went white.

I stared at her.

“No.””

Marcus smiled.

“Ask her what she did before the lake.””

Claire looked at me.

Her lips trembled.

And before she could speak…

Police sirens filled the forest.

May you like

But nobody moved.

Because everyone was waiting for Claire’s answer.
