Chapter 8: The Truth Claire Hid
The police arrived within minutes.
But nobody was arrested.
Not yet.
Because everyone was too busy staring at Claire.
At my wife.
The woman who came back from the dead.
The woman who saved my daughter.
The woman Marcus had just accused of destroying everything.
I wanted to believe Claire.
I needed to believe her.
But after everything I learned…
Trust felt like a luxury I could no longer afford.
A detective approached.
“Mr. Ashford, we need everyone to stay where they are.””
I nodded.
But my eyes never left Claire.
“Tell me the truth.””
Her face broke.
“I will.””
“Everything.””
She looked at Lily.
Then at Ethan.
Then at me.
“Before the accident, I discovered Marcus was stealing from your company.””
I nodded.
“I knew that part.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t.””
She stepped closer.
“He wasn’t stealing money.””
I frowned.
“What else?””
“He was collecting information.””
“About what?””
Claire looked at me.
“About your identity.””
The same cold feeling returned.
“My identity?””
She nodded.
“Marcus knew your family history before you did.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Because he found out about me.””
Claire looked at him.
“Yes.””
I looked between them.
“Explain.””
Claire took a deep breath.
“Your father knew about Adrian.””
Adrian looked away.
“He abandoned me.””
Claire nodded.
“He feared Adrian would expose everything.””
“What everything?””
She swallowed.
“The company was originally built using illegal deals.””
I felt numb.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“And Marcus?””
“He found documents proving it.””
I looked at Marcus.
“So he blackmailed my family?””
Claire shook her head.
“He wanted control.””
She paused.
“And when he realized I knew…”
She looked at the lake.
“He tried to scare me.””
“What happened that night?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“He brought Lily there.””
My heart stopped.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Marcus said he wanted to talk.””
Claire looked at Lily.
“He threatened to hurt you.””
I closed my eyes.
The same words Lily had said.
Claire continued.
“I recorded everything.””
Marcus laughed.
“You always thought you were smarter than everyone.””
Claire ignored him.
“I hid the recording.””
“Where?””
She looked at Ethan.
“With his mother.””
Ethan nodded.
“My mother kept it safe.””
I looked at Ethan.
“Then why did she disappear?””
His eyes became dark.
“Because Marcus found her.””
Nobody spoke.
Then the detective asked:
“Where is this recording now?””
Claire looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus smiled.
“Yes, you do.””
Everyone turned.
He pointed at Lily.
“The child knows.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Marcus continued.
“She was there when Claire hid it.””
Lily started shaking.
“No.””
I immediately held her.
“It’s okay.””
Marcus smiled.
“She remembers.””
Claire looked terrified.
“Marcus, stop.””
But Lily suddenly whispered:
“The red box.””
Everyone froze.
I looked at her.
“What red box?””
She looked at Claire.
“Mommy said…”
Her voice trembled.
“She said Daddy would find it when I was ready.””
Claire covered her mouth.
Because she knew exactly what Lily meant.
“Where is it?””
Lily looked toward the old house near the lake.
“The wall.””
The police searched the abandoned cabin beside the lake.
Thirty minutes later, an officer returned holding a small red metal box.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
And one recording.
The detective placed it on the table.
“Everyone needs to hear this.””
The recording started.
Static.
Then voices.
Marcus.
Claire.
And another voice.
A voice I recognized.
My own.
But younger.
Confused.
Terrified.
I looked at Claire.
“What is this?””
She whispered:
“Your father recorded it.””
The audio played.
And then my younger voice said:
“I don’t remember anything.””
A pause.
Then Marcus’s voice:
“That’s the point.””
My blood froze.
The detective stopped the recording.
Everyone looked at me.
Because the truth wasn’t just about Marcus.
It was about me.
Something had happened to me years ago.
May you like
Something I had forgotten.
And the next recording would reveal why.
