Chapter 2: The Boy Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The boy in the green hoodie stood in front of my daughter while hundreds of people stared at him.

I felt like the entire room had tilted.

“Ethan?”” I repeated.

The boy looked at me.

“Yes.””

My hands tightened around Lily.

“No.””

My voice came out colder than I expected.

“That’s impossible.””

The boy’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Something closer to sadness.

“You know it’s possible, Mr. Ashford.””

I hated that he knew my name.

I hated that my daughter knew his.

I hated that after a year of doctors telling me Lily was trapped inside her own trauma, this stranger had walked in and pulled a word from her mouth in seconds.

Daniel moved closer.

“Sir, should I call security?””

I nodded.

“Do it.””

The boy didn’t resist.

He simply looked at Lily.

And Lily looked back at him.

Her eyes were full of memories.

Memories I didn’t understand.

“Daddy…” she whispered.

Everyone froze.

I almost dropped her.

Because it was the first time she had called me that in twelve months.

I looked down.

“Lily?””

She immediately covered her mouth.

Like she was afraid she had done something wrong.

“No, no, sweetheart,” I said quickly.

“You can say it. Please.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“You can say anything.””

But she looked back at Ethan.

Fear returned.

The security guards entered the ballroom.

Two large men approached the boy.

“Come with us,” one said.

Ethan didn’t move.

Instead, he said quietly, “Ask her what happened at the lake.””

My entire body went cold.

The lake.

Nobody knew about the lake.

Not the doctors.

Not the media.

Not even most of my employees.

The lake was where my wife, Claire, died.

The night Lily stopped speaking.

I stared at Ethan.

“How do you know about that?””

He looked at Lily.

“She was there.””

The ballroom exploded with whispers.

I felt my stomach drop.

“Stop.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Ethan finally looked at me.

“I know exactly what happened.””

I stepped toward him.

“Who are you?””

He reached into his hoodie pocket.

The security guards immediately tensed.

But he slowly pulled out an old photograph.

He held it toward me.

I didn’t want to take it.

But I did.

The second I saw it, everything inside me froze.

It was a picture of Claire.

My wife.

Standing beside a little boy.

A boy with green eyes.

A boy wearing the same green hoodie.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten note.

“Ethan and Lily. The secret only they know.””

My hands started shaking.

“That’s impossible.””

Ethan’s voice became softer.

“Your wife gave me that picture.””

I looked at Lily.

Her face had gone white.

“Daddy…”

She spoke again.

A real word.

A broken word.

“She said…”

Her voice disappeared.

I knelt in front of her.

“What did she say?””

Lily looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

“She said not to trust…”

She stopped.

Her body started trembling.

“Not to trust who?””

She squeezed her eyes shut.

The doctors moved closer.

But Ethan spoke.

“Her uncle.””

The room went silent.

I slowly stood.

“My wife’s brother?””

Ethan nodded.

“Marcus.””

My heart pounded.

Marcus Vale.

Claire’s older brother.

My business partner.

The man who had comforted me after Claire’s death.

The man who told me Lily needed time.

The man who had been in my house every week.

I looked toward the crowd.

Marcus was standing near the back.

And for the first time all night…

He looked afraid.

Our eyes met.

He immediately looked away.

That small movement told me everything.

“Marcus,” I whispered.

He forced a smile.

“Don’t listen to a random child.””

Ethan looked at him.

“You were there that night.””

Marcus laughed nervously.

“That’s ridiculous.””

But Lily suddenly grabbed my hand.

Her voice came out stronger.

“Daddy…”

I looked at her.

She was crying.

“He pushed…”

Her sentence broke apart.

Everyone leaned closer.

“Who pushed?””

Lily looked at Marcus.

And whispered:

“He pushed Mommy.””

The room erupted.

Marcus turned pale.

May you like

And before anyone could react, he said something that made my blood freeze.

“Lily, you promised you would never tell.””
