Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Twins
Nobody spoke.
Ryan held the birth certificate with trembling hands.
I stepped closer.
"Why is Grace's name on that document?""
He looked at the paper.
Then at me.
"I don't know.""
Daniel took it carefully.
The document appeared genuine.
It listed the date of Grace's birth, the hospital, and the names of the parents.
But the mother's name was not mine.
It was Emily Bennett.
I felt the room spin.
"That's impossible.""
Daniel examined the document.
"This appears to be a birth registration record, not a final certificate.""
Ryan shook his head.
"Emily died years before Claire became pregnant.""
I looked at the photograph of Sophie.
Then at the birth certificate.
"Could someone have used Emily's identity?""
Vanessa suddenly began crying.
Richard turned toward her.
"Be quiet.""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Vanessa.""
"I'm done.""
Richard stepped toward her.
She moved behind Ryan.
"I can't do this anymore.""
I stared at her.
"What do you know?""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"Emily was pregnant when she died.""
Ryan went completely still.
"That's not possible.""
"She gave birth before the accident.""
My heart pounded.
Vanessa continued.
"She had twins. Sophie and another baby.""
Richard's expression darkened.
"Enough.""
But Vanessa was no longer listening.
"The second baby was placed in a private neonatal unit. Richard arranged for the records to be altered. He wanted to use the child as leverage against Emily's family.""
I looked at the document.
"Are you saying Grace is Emily's daughter?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
The room became silent.
Ryan looked as though he might collapse.
"Then how did Claire have Grace?""
Vanessa's voice trembled.
"Because Richard arranged an embryo transfer.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
She looked at me.
"During your fertility treatment, the clinic received an embryo under a false identity. You were told both embryos came from your own genetic material.""
My mother wasn't there.
I wished she had been.
I wished someone could tell me this was impossible.
I looked at Ryan.
"Did you know?""
He shook his head violently.
"No.""
Vanessa continued.
"Richard wanted Emily's daughter raised inside your marriage. He believed that if Grace became legally connected to you and Ryan, he could eventually claim rights through the Bennett family.""
I felt sick.
"But I carried her.""
"Yes," Vanessa whispered.
"You carried her. You gave birth to her. You are her mother in every way that matters.""
Tears blurred my vision.
I looked toward the birth certificate.
"Why would my father allow this?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Your father didn't know. Emily had arranged for the embryo to be preserved before she died. Richard gained access to the clinic records through a business partner.""
Daniel looked horrified.
"This is a criminal conspiracy.""
Richard suddenly laughed.
"You people are very imaginative.""
He reached for the document.
Daniel pulled it away.
"Don't touch it.""
Richard's expression turned vicious.
"You think a few papers will destroy me?""
Ryan stepped forward.
"You stole my daughter.""
Richard looked at him.
"I gave you a family.""
"You hid Sophie from me.""
"Because you were useless.""
Ryan's face crumpled.
Richard continued.
"You couldn't even keep your first marriage intact. You couldn't manage a company. You couldn't protect your own wife. I had to arrange everything.""
I stared at him.
"Did you arrange my marriage too?""
Richard smiled.
"Of course.""
My throat tightened.
"Did you know I was carrying Emily's child?""
"From the beginning.""
I felt something inside me break.
He had watched me prepare for motherhood.
He had attended our baby shower.
He had held Grace after her birth.
And all that time, he had known the truth.
"You used me.""
Richard shrugged.
"You were useful.""
The words were so cruel that even Vanessa looked away.
I stepped closer.
"You allowed me to spend three months believing my daughters were simply twins from my pregnancy, while you planned to use them as financial instruments.""
Richard tilted his head.
"You're being dramatic.""
Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
"Yes. We're inside the building.""
A pause.
"Good. Come to the server room.""
Richard's expression changed.
He turned toward the security guards.
"Get the documents.""
Before they could move, a loud command echoed through the corridor.
"Police! Nobody move!""
Two officers entered.
Behind them was a woman in a gray coat.
She was carrying a folder.
She looked directly at Richard.
"Mr. Bennett, I'm Detective Harris. We have a warrant for your arrest.""
Richard laughed.
"On what grounds?""
"Financial fraud, evidence tampering, unlawful interference with guardianship proceedings, and suspected involvement in the disappearance of a minor.""
Richard's face lost its color.
Vanessa began crying harder.
The detective approached her.
"Ms. Cole, we need your cooperation.""
Vanessa nodded.
"I'll tell you everything.""
Richard pointed at her.
"You're making a mistake.""
She looked at him.
"No. I made a mistake when I helped you.""
The officers took Richard's arms.
As they led him away, he turned toward me.
"You think you've won, Claire? Your father built an empire on secrets. You have no idea what you're inheriting.""
I watched him disappear through the doorway.
Then I looked at Ryan.
He was still holding the birth certificate.
Sophie stood several feet away.
She was watching him carefully.
Ryan slowly crouched.
"Can I come closer?""
Sophie hesitated.
Then she nodded.
He reached out his hand.
She took it.
For the first time, Ryan looked like a father.
Not a husband.
Not a businessman.
Just a man realizing how much of his child's life he had lost.
I turned toward Grace's birth record.
My daughter.
My little girl.
The one I had carried beneath my heart.
I had a thousand questions.
But the most important one was still unanswered.
Why had Emily's child been placed in my care without my knowledge?
Daniel seemed to read my thoughts.
He opened the metal box again.
There was one final envelope inside.
It bore my father's handwriting.
For Claire, if the truth about Grace is ever discovered.
I opened it.
The letter contained only a few lines.
My darling girl,
I knew Emily was in danger. I tried to protect her, but I was too late.
Before she died, she asked me to find someone who could love her daughters without seeing them as heirs or property.
I promised her I would.
When you and Ryan began your family, I believed I had found the answer.
But I never knew Richard had found a way to interfere.
If Grace is your daughter, then please remember this: biology may explain where a child came from, but love determines where she belongs.
I held the letter against my chest.
Then I looked at Grace's photograph on my phone.
I had been there when she took her first breath.
I had held her when she cried.
I had kissed her tiny forehead every morning.
No document could change that.
May you like
But there was still one more person who needed to answer for everything.
Ryan.
