Chapter 3: My Father's Final Warning

I didn't open the letter immediately.

I sat at the kitchen table with it in front of me while Lily and Grace slept in the next room.

The envelope looked ordinary.

White paper.

A faded blue seal.

My father's handwriting.

But those six words had turned it into something terrifying.

My mother sat opposite me.

"Your father was worried about something before he died," she said.

"About Ryan?""

"Not exactly. He never accused Ryan of anything. But he asked me several times whether you had signed any financial documents after your engagement.""

I frowned.

"I signed the mortgage paperwork.""

My mother shook her head.

"There was no mortgage on the house. Your father paid for it through the trust.""

I looked at her.

"What did I sign, then?""

"I don't know.""

I broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter and a small brass key.

I unfolded the paper.

My darling Claire,

If you are reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen. I wanted you to build a happy life without worrying about the money I left behind.

But I also knew that some people mistake kindness for weakness.

Never allow anyone to make you believe that you must surrender your independence to keep a marriage.

The house is yours. The investments are yours. The money placed in the family trust is intended for you and your children.

However, there is one account I never told you about.

It contains records of a transaction involving a company called Bennett Maritime Holdings.

If someone attempts to access that account, contact attorney Daniel Foster immediately.

Do not trust Richard Bennett.

I stopped reading.

My mother covered her mouth.

"Your father knew Richard?""

"Apparently.""

I continued.

And Claire, one final thing.

If Ryan asks you to sign documents transferring the property or your children's inheritance, do not sign them.

I discovered that Richard had attempted something similar with another family years ago.

I could not prove it before my death.

But I left the evidence where only you can find it.

I love you.

Dad.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then I picked up the brass key.

"What does this open?""

My mother turned it over.

There was a tiny number engraved into the metal.

314.

"Your father's old bank box," she whispered.

I called the attorney listed on the back of the letter.

Daniel Foster answered after three rings.

"Foster and Associates.""

"My name is Claire Bennett. My father was Thomas Bennett.""

Silence.

Then his voice changed.

"Claire?""

"Yes.""

"Where have you been? I've been waiting for you to contact me.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why?""

"Because your father instructed me to release certain documents when you became a mother or when someone attempted to interfere with your inheritance. Whichever came first.""

I glanced toward the nursery.

"I have twin daughters.""

"I know. Congratulations.""

"Mr. Foster, my husband is trying to take money from our joint account, and my father-in-law wants me to sign separation documents.""

Daniel was quiet for a moment.

"Have you signed anything?""

"No.""

"Good. Don't sign anything. Can you come to my office tomorrow?""

"I can.""

"And Claire?""

"Yes?""

"Bring the brass key.""

The following morning, my mother watched the twins while I drove downtown.

Daniel's office was on the twenty-third floor of a glass building overlooking the city.

He was a silver-haired man in his sixties who had known my father for more than thirty years.

When I entered, he stood immediately.

"You look exactly like him.""

I swallowed.

"I wish he were here.""

"So do I.""

He placed a thick file on the desk.

"Your father established the Bennett Maritime Trust after selling his shipping company. He transferred several properties and investment holdings into it.""

I nodded.

"How much?""

"At the time of his death, approximately $12 million.""

My mouth fell open.

Twelve million dollars.

I had spent the last three months calculating whether I could afford another box of diapers.

Daniel continued.

"Your father also retained a controlling interest in a company called Bennett Maritime Holdings.""

"What's that?""

"A logistics and shipping investment company. It owns shares in several port-related businesses.""

I remembered the name from my father's letter.

"What does Richard have to do with it?""

Daniel opened another folder.

"Richard Bennett was hired as a consultant years ago. He later persuaded your husband to join one of the company's subsidiary operations.""

"Ryan works for a cruise line.""

"He does. But his employment arrangement is connected to a separate company Richard controls.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"Because Richard wanted access to your father's business relationships.""

Daniel pushed a document toward me.

"This is the most important part. Your father discovered that someone had been moving money through shell companies connected to Richard.""

I looked at the figures.

Several transfers had been made over a period of four years.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Some payments were labeled consulting fees.

Others were listed as operational expenses.

"Was my husband involved?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Your father suspected he was.""

My stomach dropped.

"Suspected?""

"He had evidence of Ryan signing two authorization documents. But he couldn't establish whether Ryan understood what he was signing.""

I thought about all the times Ryan had asked me to trust him.

All the times he had told me his father's business was complicated.

All the times I had been instructed not to ask questions.

Then Daniel showed me another document.

It was a copy of a trust amendment.

My name appeared at the top.

So did Ryan's.

I read the heading.

*Proposed Beneficiary Transfer and Property Assignment.*

"What's this?""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Someone attempted to make your husband a controlling beneficiary of the trust.""

"When?""

"Six months ago.""

I stared at the date.

Six months ago.

Ryan had been at sea.

He had called me that week and complained about being exhausted.

He had asked me whether I could sign some documents he had emailed.

I remembered.

He had said they were routine family tax forms.

I had refused because I was recovering from childbirth preparations and hadn't had time to read them.

My hands went cold.

"Did I sign anything?""

Daniel checked the file.

"No. The transfer was never completed.""

"Who submitted it?""

He turned the page.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Richard.

But the witness signature belonged to someone else.

Vanessa Cole.

I stared at the name.

The mistress.

She hadn't simply been a woman Ryan met aboard a ship.

She had been involved in the paperwork.

Daniel watched my expression.

"Do you know her?""

I nodded slowly.

"She was standing beside my husband yesterday when he came home.""

Daniel closed the file.

"Then we have a much bigger problem than an affair.""

He opened a drawer and removed a small photograph.

It showed Ryan, Richard, and Vanessa standing together outside a luxury hotel.

The date printed on the back was from four years earlier.

Before Ryan had even proposed to me.

I looked at Daniel.

"How long has she known my family?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached for another document.

"Claire, I need you to look at this.""

It was a company registration certificate.

Vanessa Cole was listed as the director of a private company.

The company's registered address was Richard's business headquarters.

And its principal shareholder was Ryan Bennett.

My husband had not met Vanessa during his latest voyage.

They had been working together for years.
