Chapter 6: The Secret Behind My Daughters' Birth

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Michael's words seemed to hang in the air.

One of those girls has a different biological father.

I looked toward the nursery.

Lily was sleeping with one tiny fist tucked beneath her cheek. Grace lay beside her, her mouth slightly open, making the soft breathing sounds that had become the most comforting thing in my world.

They were my daughters.

Both of them.

I had carried them for nine months. I had endured an emergency C-section. I had spent countless nights holding them against my chest while wondering whether I was doing anything right.

And now a stranger was telling me that one of them might not be Ryan's child.

I turned toward Michael.

"Explain.""

He lowered his eyes.

"Your father discovered something during the final months of his life. He hired a private investigator after noticing irregularities in the medical insurance records connected to Ryan.""

"What irregularities?""

"Ryan had submitted a claim for a genetic screening test. The test wasn't related to your pregnancy.""

I stared at him.

"Why would my father know about that?""

"Because the payment came from an account connected to Bennett Maritime Holdings. Your father was reviewing suspicious expenses.""

My mother stepped closer.

"Michael, stop speaking in riddles. What did Thomas discover?""

Michael took a breath.

"Ryan had secretly undergone a paternity test.""

My knees weakened.

"When?""

"Before the twins were born.""

I looked at him.

"That's impossible. He was at sea.""

"He sent a sample through a private medical service.""

My mother gripped my arm.

"Claire, don't jump to conclusions.""

I shook my head.

"Did the test say he wasn't the father?""

Michael hesitated.

"I don't have the result. But I know Ryan received it.""

I picked up my phone and called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

"Claire?""

"Richard has filed for custody. He's claiming Ryan isn't the biological father of my daughters.""

Daniel sighed.

"I expected something like this.""

"You expected it?""

"Your father left a sealed instruction concerning the possibility of a paternity dispute.""

My heart began pounding.

"What instruction?""

"Come to my office tomorrow morning. Bring your mother. And don't allow Ryan or Richard to take the girls anywhere without your consent.""

After the call, I stood in the kitchen staring at the wall.

My mother gently touched my shoulder.

"Whatever the truth is, those babies are yours.""

"I know.""

"Nothing changes that.""

I nodded.

But something was eating at me.

Why would Ryan have a paternity test done without telling me?

And why would Richard use the result in a custody petition?

That evening, my phone rang again.

Vanessa.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

"What do you want?""

Her voice sounded unusually nervous.

"Claire, I need to speak with you.""

"I have nothing to say to you.""

"Please. It's about the girls.""

I looked toward the nursery.

"What about them?""

"Ryan is lying to you.""

I closed my eyes.

"That's hardly news.""

"No. I mean about the paternity test.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What do you know?""

She exhaled shakily.

"Ryan didn't test because he suspected you cheated.""

"Then why?""

"Because Richard told him to.""

I sat down.

"Why would Richard care?""

"Because he needed to know whether the twins could inherit your father's estate.""

The room seemed to tilt.

Vanessa continued.

"Your father placed a condition in the trust. Any biological children born to you would become protected beneficiaries. Richard wanted to know whether Ryan could claim parental rights over both girls.""

I swallowed.

"But Ryan is their father.""

There was a pause.

"Not necessarily.""

"Vanessa, tell me exactly what you know.""

She hesitated.

Then she whispered something that made my stomach turn.

"Ryan and I were together before you got married. We never stopped seeing each other. And when you were pregnant, Richard believed one of the babies might be Ryan's—but he wasn't sure.""

I couldn't breathe.

"What are you saying?""

"Ryan had a relationship with another woman shortly before your wedding. Her name was Emily.""

"Who is Emily?""

"Someone who worked in your father's company.""

I stood abruptly.

"Are you telling me Ryan had another relationship before he married me?""

"Yes.""

"And one of my daughters might be hers?""

"No. Emily died before you became pregnant.""

I felt sick.

"Then what does she have to do with my children?""

Vanessa's voice broke.

"Emily was Ryan's first wife.""

The phone nearly slipped from my hand.

"What?""

"They had a secret marriage. Richard arranged it because Emily was the daughter of a business partner. When the marriage became inconvenient, they separated. Ryan never told you.""

I struggled to process the words.

"That's impossible. I married Ryan legally.""

"His marriage to Emily had been annulled. But there's something else.""

"What?""

"Emily had a daughter.""

I stared at the wall.

A daughter.

My mind raced through dates, documents, and conversations.

"Where is she?""

"I don't know. Richard handled everything.""

I heard a door slam on Vanessa's end.

Her voice became hurried.

"Claire, listen carefully. Richard isn't trying to get custody because he cares about the girls. He wants access to the trust. If Ryan can establish himself as the father of both children, he believes he can challenge your father's restrictions.""

"But why would he say one of the girls isn't Ryan's?""

"Because he needs to create a legal dispute. It delays the trust's protection while they try to establish a different claim.""

I swallowed.

"Who is the father, Vanessa?""

Silence.

Then she said:

"Ryan knows.""

The call ended.

I sat motionless for several minutes.

My mother came into the kitchen.

"What happened?""

I told her everything.

She looked horrified.

"Your father never mentioned another marriage.""

"Maybe he didn't know.""

I looked at the clock.

It was nearly midnight.

Then an email arrived from an unfamiliar medical laboratory.

The subject line read:

*CONFIDENTIAL PATERNITY REPORT — PATIENT AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.*

I opened the attachment.

It contained a scanned report.

Two names appeared.

Lily Bennett.

Grace Bennett.

Under the first name was a result.

Under the second was another.

I read them.

Then read them again.

The report stated that Ryan was the biological father of Lily.

But he was not the biological father of Grace.

My hands went numb.

At the bottom of the report was a name.

*Biological father: Daniel Foster.*

My attorney.

The man who had been helping me protect my daughters.

I looked up.

My mother was staring at the screen.

Neither of us spoke.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel Foster.

May you like

And before I could answer, a message appeared beneath his name.

Claire, whatever you do, don't believe that report. Richard has fabricated it.
