Chapter 7: The Man Whose Name Was on the Test

I didn't answer Daniel's call.

I couldn't.

The report was still open on my laptop.

Lily was Ryan's daughter.

Grace was supposedly Daniel's.

The man who had spent the last several days helping me uncover my husband's crimes was allegedly the biological father of one of my children.

It made no sense.

I called my mother into the kitchen.

"Mom, do you remember anyone named Daniel before I married Ryan?""

She shook her head.

"No. Why?""

"Did Dad ever mention him?""

"Daniel Foster was your father's lawyer. He was around the family for years.""

I looked at the report.

"Then how could he be Grace's father?""

My mother stared at me.

"Claire, you were married to Ryan. You were together when the girls were conceived.""

"I know.""

"Then the report is wrong.""

I wanted to believe her.

But the document contained laboratory identification numbers, dates, and official-looking signatures.

It looked real.

My phone rang again.

This time, I answered.

"Daniel, explain.""

His voice was strained.

"Claire, where did you get that report?""

"It was emailed to me.""

"Forward it immediately.""

"Are you Grace's biological father?""

A long silence followed.

Then he said, "No.""

I closed my eyes.

"Then why does the report say you are?""

"Because someone used my name and personal information to create a fraudulent test.""

"How do you know?""

"Because I never submitted a sample. I have never participated in a paternity test involving your daughters.""

I swallowed.

"Can you prove that?""

"Yes. And I can prove something else.""

"What?""

"Your father anticipated this exact situation.""

Daniel asked me to bring the report to his office.

I refused to leave the girls with anyone I didn't trust.

He agreed to come to my house with another attorney.

An hour later, Daniel arrived with a woman named Sarah Mitchell.

She introduced herself as a family-law specialist.

She examined the document on my laptop.

After several minutes, she frowned.

"Claire, this isn't an authentic laboratory report.""

My heart pounded.

"How can you tell?""

"The laboratory identification number belongs to a different case. The signature is digitally reproduced. And the authorization section contains an outdated format.""

She turned the screen toward me.

"Someone copied a genuine report and altered the names.""

I felt my shoulders collapse.

"So Grace isn't Daniel's daughter?""

Sarah shook her head.

"Nothing in this document establishes that.""

Daniel sat opposite me.

"Claire, there's something you need to understand. Richard has been trying to create a legal opening in the trust for years.""

"Why?""

"Because your father placed an inheritance condition on the property and investment holdings. The biological children of his daughter are protected beneficiaries. But control remains with you unless a court determines that you are incapable of managing the trust.""

I remembered the custody petition.

"That's why they're claiming I'm unstable.""

"Exactly.""

Sarah placed a document on the table.

"Richard's petition includes allegations of emotional instability, financial irresponsibility, and questionable parentage. He wants to establish enough uncertainty for a temporary administrator to be appointed.""

"Who would that administrator be?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Richard.""

My stomach tightened.

He would gain control of everything.

The house.

The investments.

The company.

Even the money intended for Lily and Grace.

"Can we stop him?""

Sarah nodded.

"We can challenge the petition, but we need the original records.""

Michael had been right.

The server archive was essential.

I looked at Daniel.

"Then let's get them.""

Before he could answer, someone knocked on the door.

My mother opened it.

Ryan stood outside.

He looked exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled, and his hair was uncombed.

"Claire, I need to talk.""

Sarah immediately stood.

"This isn't a good time.""

Ryan looked past her.

"I don't care who she is. I'm here to see my wife.""

"I'm not your wife in any meaningful sense anymore," I said.

His expression changed.

"Can we talk privately?""

"No.""

He glanced toward the nursery.

"How are the girls?""

The question caught me off guard.

It was the first time he had asked since returning from the port.

"They're fine.""

"I want to see them.""

"Why?""

"Because they're my daughters.""

I studied his face.

"Then why did you allow Richard to file a petition claiming you aren't their father?""

Ryan's jaw tightened.

"That isn't what happened.""

I held up the fraudulent report.

"Then explain this.""

He looked at it.

For a fraction of a second, fear crossed his face.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"You did this.""

Daniel stood.

"Careful, Ryan.""

Ryan pointed at him.

"You've been waiting years to destroy my family.""

Daniel's expression remained calm.

"Your father destroyed your family. I merely refused to help him.""

Ryan laughed bitterly.

"You're still pretending you don't know what happened?""

I stepped between them.

"What happened?""

Ryan looked at me.

Then at the nursery.

His voice dropped.

"Claire, I need you to understand something. Richard isn't the only person who has been lying.""

My heart began racing.

"What does that mean?""

Ryan rubbed his face.

"Before we married, I made a mistake.""

"Vanessa?""

"No.""

"Emily?""

His eyes snapped toward me.

"Who told you that name?""

I said nothing.

He slowly sat down.

"Emily was my first wife. But we never had a real marriage. Richard arranged it to secure a business deal.""

"Did you have a child together?""

Ryan looked away.

"Yes.""

The room went silent.

I felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath me.

"Where is she?""

"I don't know.""

"You don't know?""

"Richard handled everything after Emily died.""

I stared at him.

"How old is she?""

"She would be five now.""

Five.

I thought about the timeline.

Ryan and I had been married for four years.

I had met him after his supposed first marriage had ended.

"Does she have anything to do with Grace?""

Ryan shook his head.

"No. Grace is my daughter.""

"Then why does the report say otherwise?""

"Because Dad needed leverage. He thinks if he can make the girls' parentage a legal issue, he can freeze the trust.""

I swallowed.

"Why didn't you tell me about Emily?""

He looked down.

"Because I was afraid you'd leave.""

I almost laughed.

"You had a secret wife, a secret daughter, a mistress, and a business arrangement involving my inheritance. And you were afraid I'd leave because you told me the truth?""

Ryan's eyes filled with tears.

For a moment, he looked like the man I had once loved.

Then he said something that destroyed the last piece of sympathy I had for him.

"Claire, I can explain everything if you help me.""

"Help you with what?""

"Sign the trust documents. Give Dad temporary control. Once he gets the company stabilized, he'll make sure you and the girls are taken care of.""

I stared at him.

"You're still asking me to surrender everything?""

He leaned forward.

"Please. I have nowhere else to go.""

I looked at him for a long time.

Then I opened the front door.

"Get out.""

Ryan stood slowly.

Before leaving, he turned around.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

I held the door open.

"No, Ryan. I made that mistake when I believed you.""

He walked toward his car.

But just before he reached it, his phone rang.

He answered.

I couldn't hear the person on the other end.

Then his face changed.

"What do you mean she's alive?""

He turned toward me.

For the first time, my husband looked genuinely terrified.

May you like

And when he spoke again, I heard the name that had been haunting every document.

"Emily?""
