Chapter 4: The Mistress Was Never an Accident
I drove home in a daze.
The city moved around me, but I barely noticed the traffic lights or the people crossing the streets.
For years, I had believed Ryan was a hardworking man who had fallen into temptation.
Now I was beginning to understand that the affair might have been only one part of something much bigger.
My mother was sitting on the living room floor when I arrived.
Grace was asleep in her lap.
Lily was chewing on a soft toy.
"How did it go?"" Mom asked.
I placed the documents on the table.
"Ryan and Vanessa have a company together.""
My mother looked up.
"What?""
"She isn't an intern. She's a director.""
I showed her the registration certificate.
My mother read it twice.
"Claire, this is deliberate.""
"I know.""
She placed the paper down.
"Did Daniel explain what they wanted?""
"They tried to transfer control of Dad's trust.""
My mother went pale.
"How much money is in that trust?""
"Twelve million.""
She closed her eyes.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Ryan.
We need to meet tonight. Just you and me. No lawyers. No drama.
I stared at it.
My mother shook her head.
"Don't go.""
"I need to know what he thinks I know.""
"Claire, that man has already shown you who he is.""
"I won't go alone.""
I called Daniel.
He advised me not to discuss any financial matters without him present. But he agreed to arrange for a discreet security consultant to accompany me.
The meeting was scheduled for seven at a restaurant near the waterfront.
Ryan arrived fifteen minutes late.
He was wearing a dark jacket and carrying the expensive leather bag I had bought him for his birthday.
For a moment, seeing him brought back memories of our wedding.
The way he had cried when I walked down the aisle.
The way he had promised never to make me feel alone.
Then he sat down.
"You're looking better," he said.
I stared at him.
"Thank you.""
He ordered a drink.
He didn't ask about the girls.
He didn't ask how I had been sleeping.
Instead, he opened a folder.
"These are the separation papers.""
I looked at the documents.
There were several pages.
One section concerned child custody.
Another concerned property rights.
I read the final page.
My signature line was beside a statement declaring that I voluntarily relinquished all claims to the family residence and associated assets.
I looked up.
"You want me to give up my house?""
"Our house.""
"According to the deed, it belongs to my father's trust.""
Ryan's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
"Who told you that?""
"My mother.""
He leaned back.
"Your mother doesn't understand business.""
"Neither do I, apparently. That's why I hired a lawyer.""
Ryan's jaw tightened.
"Claire, don't do this.""
"Do what?""
"Turn a private family matter into a legal war.""
I looked at him.
"You brought your mistress home and told me you were too attractive to be faithful. What part of this is private?""
He lowered his voice.
"Vanessa and I are serious.""
"Congratulations.""
"I don't want to hurt you.""
I almost laughed.
"You should have thought about that before you kissed her in front of our daughters.""
He rubbed his forehead.
"You're making this difficult.""
"No, Ryan. I'm finally asking questions.""
He closed the folder.
"Fine. What do you want?""
I looked directly into his eyes.
"Why did you and Vanessa try to take control of my father's trust?""
He went still.
The restaurant suddenly seemed very quiet.
Then he leaned forward.
"Who told you that?""
"Does it matter?""
"Claire, you don't understand what you're dealing with.""
"Then explain it.""
He glanced around.
"Not here.""
"Why? Are you afraid someone might hear?""
His face darkened.
"Your father left a lot of complicated arrangements. Richard has been trying to protect the family.""
"From what?""
"From you making stupid decisions.""
I stared at him.
"Excuse me?""
"You've never understood money. Dad has managed everything for years. The trust is too complicated for someone like you.""
"Someone like me?""
"You're a mother now. You should focus on the girls instead of trying to control businesses you know nothing about.""
There it was.
The same condescension.
The same assumption that because I had been changing diapers and preparing bottles, I had somehow become incapable of reading a bank statement.
I pushed the separation papers back toward him.
"I'm not signing.""
Ryan's expression hardened.
"Then you'll regret it.""
"Is that a threat?""
"It's a warning.""
He stood.
Before leaving, he leaned down.
"One more thing. Dad is filing for temporary custody.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"Of the twins?""
"He believes you're emotionally unstable.""
I stared at him.
"Because you cheated?""
"Because you have been making accusations and refusing to cooperate.""
He walked away.
I remained seated until my hands stopped trembling.
Then my phone buzzed.
An unknown number.
You need to stop looking into Vanessa. She isn't the person you should be afraid of.
A second message followed.
Ask Ryan what happened to the last woman who tried to expose Richard.
I called the number.
It went straight to voicemail.
I returned home and showed the messages to my mother.
She looked frightened.
"Claire, call the lawyer.""
I did.
Daniel listened carefully.
"Do not respond to that number. Save everything. I'll investigate.""
Before hanging up, he added something.
"There's another matter you should know about.""
"What?""
"Your father maintained a private security archive. It contains records of every attempt to access his companies after his death.""
"Can we see it?""
"Yes. But there's a problem.""
"What problem?""
"The archive was accessed yesterday.""
I stopped breathing.
"By whom?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Your husband.""
I looked toward the nursery.
Both girls were sleeping.
Then I heard a car door slam outside.
My mother moved toward the window.
A black SUV was parked across the street.
A man stepped out.
He wasn't Richard.
It wasn't Ryan.
It was a stranger holding a large envelope.
He walked toward my front door.
May you like
And when he rang the bell, he called out:
"Mrs. Bennett? I'm here about your husband's other family.""
