Chapter 7: The Friend Who Sold My Secret

I stared at the name.

Rachel.

My best friend.

The person who stood in my house and cried while pretending to support me.

The person who claimed she wanted to tell me the truth.

I felt numb.

“No,” I whispered.

My father looked over my shoulder.

“Claire?””

I handed him the paper.

His expression hardened.

“Are you sure?””

I nodded slowly.

Rachel.

The name looked impossible.

For years, she had been the person I called when I was upset.

She knew my fears.

My dreams.

My weaknesses.

And apparently, she knew exactly how to use them.

I called her.

She answered after three rings.

“Claire?””

Her voice was nervous.

“Why did you send Daniel money?””

Silence.

A long, painful silence.

Then:

“I can explain.””

I closed my eyes.

Everyone always said those words after the damage was done.

“Explain.””

Rachel started crying.

“Daniel said he needed help.””

“With what?””

“He said you were leaving him.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Leaving him?””

She rushed.

“I didn’t know he was lying.””

“You knew enough.””

She became quiet.

That was the answer.

“You knew.””

“No,” she whispered.

“Yes.””

My voice shook.

“You knew something was wrong, and you still helped him.””

Rachel cried.

“I thought I was saving your marriage.””

“No.””

I looked at Daniel sitting across the room.

“You were protecting a liar.””

After the call ended, I sat quietly.

The betrayal felt different.

Daniel had been my husband.

I expected him to hurt me.

But Rachel?

She was supposed to be safe.

My father sat beside me.

“Sometimes the hardest betrayal isn’t from enemies.””

I nodded.

“It’s from people who know exactly where to hurt you.””

Days passed.

The investigation continued.

Daniel’s carefully built story collapsed piece by piece.

The secret account.

The forged documents.

The property transfer.

Everything came out.

Victoria tried to defend him publicly.

She gave interviews.

She blamed me.

She said I had “misunderstood family disagreements.””

But the world saw the truth.

Especially after the birthday video spread online.

Someone at the party had recorded everything.

The cake.

The laughter.

My expression.

My father walking in.

People didn’t see a prank.

They saw cruelty.

They saw a woman being humiliated by the people who claimed to love her.

Then one evening, I received a message.

Not from Daniel.

Not from Victoria.

From Emily.

*I need to meet you. There is something I never told you.*

I almost ignored it.

But something told me not to.

We met at a quiet café.

Emily looked nothing like the villain I imagined.

She looked exhausted.

“I’m sorry,” she said immediately.

I didn’t answer.

She looked down.

“I thought Daniel loved me.””

I stayed silent.

“He told me he was trapped in a bad marriage.””

I almost laughed.

The oldest lie.

“He told me you were controlling.””

My heart tightened.

Because those words sounded familiar.

He had told me similar things.

About other people.

About everyone except himself.

Emily opened her bag.

“I found this after I realized the truth.””

She placed a small envelope on the table.

“What is it?””

Her face turned pale.

“Proof that Daniel wasn’t the mastermind.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She pushed the envelope toward me.

“There was someone else.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

May you like

And the person standing beside Daniel…

was someone I knew very well.
