Chapter 2: The Envelope That Changed Everything
Daniel looked like he wanted to explode.
His face was covered in frosting, but his anger was impossible to miss.
“Your father just assaulted me at my own house,” he shouted.
Dad didn’t move.
“Your house?””
Daniel opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
Because everyone knew what he meant.
It was our house.
Mine and Daniel’s.
But the way he said it revealed everything.
He had already started seeing me as a guest in my own life.
Victoria grabbed a napkin and wiped her face.
“This family has lost its mind,” she said dramatically.
Dad looked at her.
“No. Someone finally opened their eyes.””
Nobody spoke.
I stood there quietly, still holding pieces of ruined frosting from my dress.
My father noticed.
His expression softened.
“Come here, sweetheart.””
That was all it took.
I walked toward him, and for the first time that night, I felt safe.
I hugged him.
And I hated that I needed my father to rescue me from my own husband.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
Dad pulled back.
“For what?””
“For ruining the party.””
His eyes changed.
“You didn’t ruin anything.””
Behind him, Daniel laughed bitterly.
“This is ridiculous. She runs crying to her father because we played a joke?””
Dad turned around.
“A joke is something everyone laughs at.””
He pointed toward me.
“She was the only person not laughing.””
Daniel crossed his arms.
“She’s always been dramatic.””
I felt something inside me break.
Not because he said it.
Because I finally believed it.
He really saw me that way.
A problem.
An inconvenience.
Someone whose feelings were always too much.
Dad opened the envelope.
“I brought something you need to see.””
Daniel’s face changed slightly.
“What is that?””
Dad removed a stack of papers.
“I spent the last three weeks collecting evidence.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Evidence of what?””
Dad looked at me.
“Everything he thought you would never find out.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Stop.””
The room froze.
Dad raised an eyebrow.
“Why?””
Daniel’s silence answered the question.
I looked at my husband.
“What is he talking about?””
Daniel looked away.
That tiny movement told me more than words could.
“Daniel?””
He sighed.
“Your father is making this into something it isn’t.””
Dad handed me the first document.
I looked down.
My hands trembled.
It was a bank statement.
A joint account statement.
And my name was on it.
But there were withdrawals I didn’t recognize.
Large withdrawals.
Thousands of dollars.
“What is this?””
Daniel remained silent.
Victoria stepped in.
“You don’t understand finances.””
I looked at her.
“Excuse me?””
She smiled.
“Men handle money differently.””
That sentence made my blood run cold.
Because suddenly, I remembered.
The missing money.
The strange excuses.
The way Daniel became defensive whenever I asked about our savings.
Dad placed another paper in my hand.
“This is from the bank.””
I read it.
Then I looked up.
“What is this?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Dad answered.
“A separate account.””
My voice became quiet.
“Whose account?””
Nobody answered.
Then my father said:
“Your husband’s.””
The room went silent.
Daniel finally spoke.
“It’s not what you think.””
I laughed.
A small, broken laugh.
“Then tell me what it is.””
He didn’t.
That hurt more.
Victoria stepped forward.
“You’re embarrassing yourself.””
I stared at her.
“No. I think you’re both finally embarrassed.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You’re choosing your father over me?””
I looked at him.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m choosing myself.””
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then my father handed me another document.
This one was a photograph.
My stomach dropped.
It showed Daniel.
At a restaurant.
With another woman.
Not a friend.
Not a coworker.
Someone holding his hand.
Someone looking at him the way I used to.
I looked at Daniel.
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
“When?””
His silence was enough.
My eyes burned.
“How long?””
Daniel looked down.
And then Victoria said something that made the entire room colder.
“Don’t act innocent. Everyone knew.””
Everyone.
The word echoed.
I turned slowly.
“What?””
She looked uncomfortable.
But it was too late.
My father stepped closer.
“There’s more.””
He pulled out one final paper.
Daniel’s face went pale.
I noticed.
“What is it?””
Dad looked directly at me.
“The reason I came here tonight.””
He placed it in my hand.
I unfolded it.
And the moment I saw the name printed at the bottom…
I stopped breathing.
Because it wasn’t another bank statement.
It wasn’t another picture.
It was a document with my signature.
A signature I never gave.
And underneath it was a line that changed my entire marriage.
*Authorized transfer of ownership.*
I looked at Daniel.
“Why did you forge my signature?””
May you like
And for the first time that night…
my husband looked afraid.
