Chapter 6: The Evidence They Never Expected

The words on Daniel’s phone haunted me.

*They found the evidence.*

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Daniel looked like a man who had finally realized the ground beneath him had disappeared.

“What evidence?”” I asked.

My voice sounded different.

Calmer.

Stronger.

Daniel looked at me, then at my father.

“It’s nothing.””

I almost smiled.

Nothing.

That was his favorite word.

The word he used every time he wanted to erase something painful.

Nothing happened.

Nothing is wrong.

Nothing matters.

But this time, I knew better.

My father stepped closer.

“Tell her.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I don’t have to explain myself to you.””

“No,” Dad replied.

“You have to explain yourself to your wife.””

Daniel looked at me.

For a moment, I saw the man I married.

The man who used to hold my hand in movie theaters.

The man who promised my father he would protect me.

Then the image disappeared.

Because the man standing in front of me was someone else.

Someone who had spent years preparing to destroy my life.

“I never wanted things to go this far,” Daniel whispered.

I stared at him.

“Then how far did you want them to go?””

He didn’t answer.

My father placed a folder on the table.

“The police are investigating financial fraud.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“You called them?””

“No,” Dad said.

“The bank did.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What did you do?””

He sank into the chair.

“I was trying to fix a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

He covered his face.

“I invested money.””

I waited.

That was all?

An investment?

Then why hide it?

Why forge my signature?

Why create a secret account?

My father opened the folder.

“He lost almost everything.””

My stomach dropped.

Daniel looked away.

“The business failed.””

I whispered:

“So you used my money.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

Because even Daniel knew there was no argument.

He had taken the money we saved together.

The money meant for our future.

The money I trusted him to protect.

“You were going to leave me with the debt,” I said.

His silence answered.

My father looked at him with disgust.

“You didn’t just betray her trust. You planned to make her responsible for your failure.””

Daniel stood suddenly.

“I was scared!””

His voice cracked.

For the first time, I saw emotion.

But it wasn’t guilt.

It was fear.

Fear of consequences.

“I lost control,” he said.

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You lost respect.””

That sentence hurt him more than any accusation.

Because he knew I was right.

The next morning, investigators arrived.

Daniel tried to act confident.

He talked about misunderstandings.

He talked about love.

He talked about stress.

But paperwork did not care about his excuses.

Neither did the truth.

Before leaving, one investigator handed me a document.

“There’s one more thing you should know.””

I looked down.

It was a transfer record.

A recent one.

My blood went cold.

Because the recipient wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t Victoria.

It was someone else.

Someone I never expected.

At the bottom of the page was a name.

My hands started shaking.

May you like

Because the person who helped Daniel destroy my life…

was someone I trusted.
