Chapter 4: The Person Behind The Betrayal
Daniel turned his phone face down.
Too late.
I had seen it.
And he knew I had.
“Who is she?””
Nobody answered.
I repeated myself.
“Who is she?””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“This isn’t the time.””
I almost laughed.
“Not the time?””
I looked around the room.
“My birthday party was destroyed. I found out my husband lied about our money. I found out my signature was forged.””
I stepped closer.
“And you’re telling me this isn’t the time?””
Daniel said nothing.
That silence was his confession.
My father calmly picked up the phone.
“Let me guess.””
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“Don’t.””
Dad ignored him.
“Her name is Emily.””
My stomach tightened.
I knew that name.
Emily was Daniel’s coworker.
The woman he always said was “just a friend.””
The woman who sent him late-night messages.
The woman who attended company dinners I was never invited to.
I looked at Daniel.
“How long?””
He whispered.
“Six months.””
Six months.
Half a year.
While I cooked dinner.
While I waited for him.
While I defended him to my friends.
He was building another relationship.
Victoria spoke softly.
“Daniel made mistakes.””
I turned toward her.
“Mistakes?””
She sighed.
“You need to think about the family.””
I stared at her.
“The family?””
“Yes.””
She pointed toward Daniel.
“My son has worked hard.””
I felt something inside me become painfully clear.
Nobody here cared about what happened to me.
They cared about protecting him.
My father looked at Victoria.
“Your son destroyed his marriage.””
She lifted her chin.
“Marriage requires forgiveness.””
Dad nodded.
“Forgiveness requires regret.””
Nobody spoke.
Because Daniel had none.
Not yet.
Then something unexpected happened.
Rachel, my friend who had been standing quietly near the door, stepped forward.
“I need to say something.””
Everyone looked at her.
Daniel frowned.
“Rachel, don’t.””
She ignored him.
“I saw this coming.””
My heart dropped.
“What?””
She looked at me sadly.
“Three months ago, I saw Daniel with Emily.””
I felt like the floor disappeared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked ashamed.
“Because he begged me not to ruin your marriage.””
I closed my eyes.
Another person knew.
Another person watched me live inside a lie.
Rachel started crying.
“I thought he would stop.””
I nodded slowly.
“You thought wrong.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Enough.””
My father looked at him.
“No. She deserves the truth.””
Daniel’s face turned angry.
“You think you’re protecting her?””
Dad answered quietly.
“I know I am.””
Then my phone rang.
Everyone froze.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
“Is this Claire?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m Emily.””
My entire body went still.
Daniel looked terrified.
Emily continued.
“I think you deserve to know what he was planning.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What do you mean?””
Her voice shook.
“Claire, Daniel wasn’t leaving you because he loved me.””
Silence.
“He was using me too.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Emily took a breath.
“He told me he needed access to your property before he could start his new life.””
My hands tightened around the phone.
“He told you that?””
“Yes.””
Daniel moved closer.
“Give me that phone.””
My father stepped between us.
“No.””
Emily continued.
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
Her next words changed everything.
“He wasn’t just trying to take your house.””
My heart raced.
“Then what?””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“He was trying to make sure you had nothing left.””
I looked at Daniel.
May you like
And for the first time…
I saw fear in his eyes.
