Chapter 9: The Truth Megan Buried
I didn’t finish reading the letter at the café.
I couldn’t.
My hands were shaking too badly.
I took it home.
I locked myself in the bedroom.
And I read every word.
Megan had written it seven years before our wedding.
Before she helped me choose my dress.
Before she stood beside me crying during my vows.
Before I ever called her my sister.
The letter wasn’t a confession.
It was worse.
It was a plan.
She wrote about me like I was an object.
A goal.
A person whose life she wanted to take.
She wrote about my friends.
My confidence.
My relationship with Daniel.
She wrote:
*Emily has everything I should have had.*
I covered my mouth.
Because I remembered that sentence.
She had said it before.
Ryan told me.
Vanessa told me.
Megan had been repeating the same belief for years.
That my happiness was something stolen from her.
The next morning, I confronted her.
Not with anger.
Not with tears.
With the letter.
She opened the door and immediately knew.
Her face changed.
“You talked to Vanessa.””
It wasn’t a question.
“Yes.””
She stepped back.
“You had no right.””
I almost smiled.
“No right?””
I held up the letter.
“You wrote about replacing me.””
Her expression hardened.
“She wasn’t supposed to show you that.””
“You’re not even denying it.””
Megan looked away.
For a moment, I saw something human.
Something broken.
Then it disappeared.
“You never understood.””
“Understand what?””
“What it feels like to watch someone have everything.””
I stared at her.
“Megan, I loved you.””
“And I loved you too.””
The answer shocked me.
“You loved me?””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“But I hated what you represented.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“You were chosen.””
Her voice cracked.
“Everyone chose you.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not my fault.””
“No.””
She smiled sadly.
“That’s why it worked.””
I didn’t understand.
“What?””
“You never saw yourself as better than anyone.””
She laughed softly.
“That’s why people loved you.””
A strange silence filled the room.
Megan wasn’t angry anymore.
She was almost admitting everything.
“I wanted to prove I could take it.””
“Take what?””
“Your life.””
The honesty was terrifying.
“You tried to destroy my marriage.””
“Yes.””
The word hit me.
“You admit it?””
“I wanted Daniel to see me.””
“Why?””
“Because he looked at you the way everyone looked at you.””
I felt sick.
“So this was never about love.””
“No.””
Her eyes met mine.
“It was about winning.””
I left before she could say anything else.
But I wasn’t prepared for what happened next.
Because when I got home, Daniel was waiting.
He looked terrified.
“What happened?””
I held up my phone.
“Someone sent me another message.””
His face changed.
“Who?””
I turned the screen toward him.
It was from Megan.
A photo.
A document.
And one sentence.
*You think you know the truth? Ask Daniel what he signed.*
My heart dropped.
“What did you sign?””
Daniel went pale.
And I knew.
May you like
There was one more secret.
One more thing.
