Chapter 6: The Midnight Secret
I stared at Megan’s message until my vision blurred.
*You should really ask Daniel who he was talking to after midnight last night.*
The words felt like a match thrown into gasoline.
For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.
I wanted to believe it was another one of her games.
Another attempt to create doubt.
Another way to make me question the people closest to me.
But then I looked at Daniel.
And I saw it.
The hesitation.
The tiny pause before he spoke.
That was all it took.
“Who were you talking to?””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Emily…”
“Who?””
He looked away.
That hurt more than the answer itself.
“Daniel.””
He sat down slowly.
“I need you to understand something.””
“No.””
My voice was shaking.
“I don’t want an explanation first. I want the truth.””
He rubbed his hands over his face.
“I was talking to Megan.””
The room went silent.
I felt like someone had knocked the air out of me.
“When?””
“Last night.””
“After midnight?””
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
“Why?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
And once again, that silence became the loudest thing in the room.
“Why were you talking to my best friend after midnight?””
“She called me.””
“And you answered?””
“I thought something was wrong.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Something was wrong. You just didn’t know it was your marriage.””
Daniel flinched.
“I made a mistake.””
“What did she say?””
He looked at me.
“She wanted to talk.””
“About what?””
“About us.””
My stomach twisted.
“Us?””
“She said she thought I was unhappy.””
I stared at him.
“Did you tell her you were?””
“No.””
“Did you let her believe you were?””
Daniel opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
That was enough.
I turned away.
Because suddenly I wasn’t only angry at Megan.
I was angry at him.
Not because he had chosen her.
But because he had allowed a door to stay open.
A door that should have been locked years ago.
“I should have told you everything,” he whispered.
“Yes.””
“I was trying to avoid hurting you.””
“You don’t protect someone by hiding the truth from them.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
For the first time, Daniel didn’t defend himself.
And somehow, that made it harder.
The next morning, I drove to Ryan’s house.
I needed answers.
Not from Megan.
Not from Daniel.
From someone who had spent years watching her.
Ryan opened the door before I knocked twice.
Like he had been expecting me.
“You saw the message?””
I nodded.
“She told Daniel about our conversation.””
Ryan sighed.
“Of course she did.””
“You knew she would?””
“Yes.””
I stepped inside.
“Why?””
Ryan closed the door.
“Because Megan doesn’t just hurt people.””
He looked exhausted.
“She controls the story.””
I followed him into the living room.
“What does that mean?””
“It means she always makes sure people find out things in the most damaging way possible.””
I thought about it.
The dinner.
The lap.
The texts.
The secrets.
“She wanted me to find out about Daniel talking to her.””
Ryan nodded.
“But she didn’t want you to know why.””
“Why?””
He walked to a drawer and pulled out a folder.
Inside were printed emails.
Messages.
Notes.
I looked at him.
“What is this?””
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Ryan placed one page in front of me.
A message from Megan.
Not to Daniel.
To Ryan.
The date was two years earlier.
*Megan: I think Emily’s marriage is fragile. She just doesn’t know it yet.*
I felt my fingers go cold.
Another message.
*Ryan: Stop talking about her like that. She’s your best friend.*
Megan’s reply:
*Megan: That’s why it will be easier. She trusts me.*
I couldn’t breathe.
“She wrote this?””
Ryan nodded.
“There’s more.””
He handed me another page.
This one made my heart stop.
It was a conversation between Megan and someone named Chloe.
A woman I didn’t know.
*Chloe: Are you really going through with it?*
*Megan: I already started.*
*Chloe: What if Emily finds out?*
*Megan: She won’t. She never suspects the people she loves.*
I stared at the words.
A terrible realization formed.
Megan wasn’t suddenly becoming cruel.
She had been building toward something.
For years.
“What was she trying to do?””
Ryan looked at me.
“I don’t know everything.””
“You have to know something.””
He looked away.
“She wanted your life.””
The answer was so simple it terrified me.
“What?””
“She wanted your friends. Your marriage. Your reputation.””
“That’s impossible.””
Ryan shook his head.
“You think someone who loves you wants to become you.””
I looked at the papers.
“And someone who hates you?””
Ryan’s voice was quiet.
“They want to replace you.””
That afternoon, I returned home and found an envelope sitting on my doorstep.
No name.
No address.
Just my name written across the front.
*Emily.*
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Megan and Daniel.
But not from the birthday dinner.
Not from months ago.
From last week.
They were standing outside a hotel.
Alone.
May you like
And on the back of the picture was a handwritten message.
*Ask him what happened after this picture was taken.*
