Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Smile

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because of what Megan did.

Not completely.

It was because I kept replaying Claire’s words.

*Watch her reaction.*

Those four words turned a cruel joke into something much darker.

Megan hadn’t accidentally crossed a boundary.

She had planned it.

She wanted to see what I would do.

She wanted to test me.

When we got home, Daniel barely spoke.

He walked through the front door, dropped his keys on the counter, and stood there like a stranger inside our own house.

The house we bought together.

The house where we painted walls on weekends.

The house where we celebrated every anniversary.

Finally, I turned around.

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I need the truth.””

He sat down.

For a few seconds, the only sound was the refrigerator humming.

Then he spoke.

“Megan started acting different about a year ago.””

I folded my arms.

“A year?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I thought I could handle it.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it hurt.

“Handle what?””

Daniel looked away.

“She started messaging me more.””

My chest tightened.

“What kind of messages?””

“Normal at first.””

“At first?””

He nodded.

“Then they became personal.””

He picked up his phone.

His hands shook slightly.

“She would complain about Ryan. She said he didn’t appreciate her. She said she felt invisible.””

I stared at him.

“And what did you say?””

“That she should talk to her husband.””

“Only that?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation cut deeper than anything else.

“Daniel.””

He closed his eyes.

“One time she said something strange.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“She said, ‘Some people don’t realize what they have until someone else wants it.’”

I felt my jaw tighten.

“And you ignored that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I didn’t want to believe she meant me.””

The room became painfully quiet.

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But underneath it was something worse.

Disappointment.

Because Megan wasn’t some random person.

She knew everything about me.

She knew my fears.

My insecurities.

The things I never told anyone else.

She knew exactly where to hurt me.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time from Ryan.

I looked at Daniel.

“Ryan texted me.””

Daniel frowned.

“What did he say?””

I opened it.

*Ryan: Can we talk tomorrow? There are things you need to know.*

I stared at the message.

Daniel saw my expression.

“What is it?””

I showed him.

His face changed.

Because suddenly we both understood.

Ryan knew something.

The next morning, I met Ryan at a quiet coffee shop near our neighborhood.

He looked nothing like the confident man everyone saw at dinner.

He looked tired.

Older.

Like someone who had been fighting a battle alone.

“Thanks for coming,” he said.

I sat down.

“What happened last night?””

Ryan looked at his coffee.

Then he said something unexpected.

“I’m sorry.””

I blinked.

“For what?””

“For not stopping her sooner.””

I didn’t answer.

Ryan took a deep breath.

“Megan likes attention.””

“That’s not new information.””

“No,” he said.

“But you don’t understand how far it goes.””

I leaned forward.

“What are you saying?””

Ryan looked around the café.

Then lowered his voice.

“She has done this before.””

My stomach tightened.

“With who?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

And that scared me.

“With your other friends.””

I felt my fingers go cold.

“What?””

Ryan nodded.

“She creates situations. Little tests. Little games.””

“Why?””

“Because she wants to know if she can get away with it.””

I thought about last night.

Her smile.

Her confidence.

The way she watched me walk toward the table.

“She wanted me to react.””

Ryan nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His expression changed.

“Because she wanted Daniel to see you as the problem.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Ryan leaned back.

“She told me once that you were the only thing standing between her and the life she deserved.””

My heart pounded.

“The life she deserved?””

Ryan looked ashamed.

“She said Daniel would eventually realize he married the wrong woman.””

I felt like the room was spinning.

Twelve years of friendship.

Twelve years of memories.

And maybe all that time, Megan had been standing beside me while secretly waiting for my life to fall apart.

Ryan reached into his bag.

“I brought something.””

He placed his phone on the table.

There was a screenshot.

A message from Megan.

To someone.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

I read the first line.

And my blood ran cold.

Because it wasn’t about stealing my husband.

It was about something much bigger.

At the bottom of the message was a name I recognized.

My name.

May you like

And underneath it, Megan had written:

*“Emily has no idea what I’ve already done.””*
