Chapter 1: The Joke That Wasn’t Funny
I thought the worst thing that could happen at our friend’s birthday dinner was spilling red wine on my dress.
I was wrong.
Because five minutes after I stepped away from the table, I came back to find my husband’s arms wrapped around the woman who had promised to stand beside me through every important moment of my life.
My best friend.
Megan.
The restaurant was loud that night. Thirty people filled the long wooden table, laughing beneath warm golden lights while plates of expensive food covered every inch of the surface. It was supposed to be a celebration.
Ryan’s fortieth birthday.
A night of old stories, inside jokes, and memories.
At least, that was what I believed.
I had known Megan for twelve years. She was there when Daniel and I first started dating. She helped me pick my wedding dress. She cried harder than I did when I walked down the aisle.
She wasn’t just my friend.
She was family.
That was why my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.
Megan wasn’t sitting in her chair.
She was sitting on Daniel’s lap.
Her arm was looped around his neck like she belonged there. Her body leaned comfortably against him while he laughed at something she said.
For a moment, I just stood there.
Frozen.
The sounds around me disappeared.
The clinking glasses.
The music.
The conversations.
Everything became a dull ringing in my ears.
Megan noticed me first.
And she didn’t move.
That was the part I would remember forever.
She looked directly at me.
Then she smiled.
Not an embarrassed smile.
Not a guilty smile.
A confident one.
Almost like she had been waiting for me to see.
She pulled Daniel slightly closer.
My stomach twisted.
I walked toward the table slowly.
“What are you doing?”” I asked.
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
Daniel immediately stopped laughing.
His face changed.
The color drained from his cheeks.
“Emily, wait—”
But Megan cut him off.
She laughed softly and tapped his shoulder.
“Relax,” she said.
“We’re just joking.””
A few people at the table looked away.
Others stared.
Nobody laughed.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked uncomfortable, but he still hadn’t moved her.
That hurt more than I wanted to admit.
I glanced across the table at Ryan.
Megan’s husband.
He was holding his drink, staring at the ice melting inside the glass.
He didn’t look surprised.
That scared me.
I took a breath.
“Okay,” I said.
Everyone watched me.
“Then I’ll go sit on Ryan’s lap.””
The reaction was instant.
Megan jumped up so quickly her chair scraped against the floor.
“Don’t be ridiculous!”” she snapped.
The entire table went silent.
I looked at her.
“Why is it ridiculous?””
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
“Why?”” I repeated.
“If it’s a joke, why can’t I make the same joke?””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You know exactly why.””
And there it was.
The truth hidden underneath the laughter.
She knew.
She knew exactly what she had done.
Because when she crossed the line, it was playful.
When someone else crossed the same line, suddenly it was disrespectful.
Daniel stood up.
“Guys, come on. This is getting blown out of proportion.””
I looked at him.
“Is it?””
He didn’t answer.
Megan grabbed her purse.
“Oh my God,” she said dramatically.
“I cannot believe this is happening.””
She looked around the table like she was the victim.
“After twelve years of friendship, you seriously think I would do something wrong?””
Nobody responded.
That silence bothered her.
“You’re being insecure,” she said.
I felt something inside me go cold.
“Insecure?””
“Yes,” she replied.
“You’re making a scene because you saw something innocent and decided to twist it.””
I stared at her.
“Then explain the joke.””
Her expression changed.
Just for a second.
A tiny crack.
Because she couldn’t.
Not with everyone watching.
Not with Ryan sitting three feet away.
Not with the entire table suddenly realizing the same thing I had.
It wasn’t a joke.
I turned away.
I walked outside before I said something I couldn’t take back.
The cold night air hit my face.
I stood near the restaurant entrance, trying to calm my shaking hands.
A few seconds later, the door opened.
Daniel stepped outside.
“Emily.””
I didn’t turn around.
“How long?””
He went quiet.
That silence answered before his words did.
“How long what?”” he asked.
I finally looked at him.
“How long has she been acting like this?””
His face tightened.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“Don’t protect her.””
Daniel looked down.
And then he whispered something that made my entire body go still.
“She’s done things before.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“She’s said things.””
“What things?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Things I should have told you.””
The restaurant door opened behind him.
But neither of us noticed.
Because Daniel’s next sentence changed everything.
“Megan once told me that if you and I ever divorced…”
He stopped.
My heart started pounding.
“If we ever divorced, what?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“She said she would take care of me.””
I felt the cold air disappear.
“What does that mean?””
Before he could answer, my phone buzzed.
A message from Megan.
Then another.
Then another.
*Megan: You are seriously embarrassing yourself.*
*Megan: I can’t believe you’re attacking me over a joke.*
*Megan: Maybe you need to ask yourself why you’re so jealous.*
I stared at the screen.
Then I looked through the restaurant window.
Ryan was still sitting at the table.
But he wasn’t angry.
He wasn’t laughing.
He was staring at Megan with an expression I had never seen before.
An expression of exhaustion.
Like someone who had been carrying a secret for years.
Then the restaurant door opened again.
One of our friends, Claire, rushed outside.
Her face was pale.
She looked between Daniel and me.
“Emily,” she whispered.
“What?””
She stepped closer.
Her voice dropped.
“I heard what Megan whispered to Daniel right before she sat on his lap.””
My stomach twisted.
“What did she say?””
Claire looked back through the window.
Then she whispered four words.
May you like
And they changed everything.
“She said, ‘Watch her reaction.’”
